Review:
Dragon Age II is a game that is perfect for slash fans and the pairing of Male! Hawke with Fenris is by far the most interesting and amusing one.

In Coffee, Black the characters of the game are transported from the fantasy world of the game canon to our time and reality. It was a surprise to find out how well Hawke, Fenris and co. are able to blend in with our world. No dragons, trolls and witches, but barristas, art students and wingmen and -women that are too nosy and interfering for their own good.

Usually I don't particularly like first person stories but with 'Coffee, Black' I didn't mind. This story is an entertaining 'what if' of the Hawke/Fenris romance from the game.

So glad this story made the recs. It's one of my favorites.

Having played the game first is absolutely not necessary to understand the plot/characters, although the meta the author slips in is hilarious.

It's really a fun read, written in a very accessible style. I did have some very minor issues with the protagonist being so flawlessly 'good' and consistently helpless. Last time I read it, there were also a fair amount of typos and like errors. Neither of these points made me want to stop reading (again).

The author does have a Tumblr account where she posts snippets of this world, occasionally. Worth finding and following.

I just could not get in to this story when I first discovered it. It was during my DA2 slash binge on AO3, this is fic is so highly recommended (even though I detest Fenris).

I didn't make it very far. I realize that this story is in a modern setting, but everyone's characterization just seemed to blatantly wrong. Hawke is gangly and awkward (Not true for the game), Fenris is cool and collected (which is very different from the brooding figure he is in the game), and so on and so forth.

The author took so many liberties with the writing that it didn't feel like I was reading a fan fiction. Had she chosen to change everyone's names, this could have been written off as a mediocre original.

Maybe I'm bitter, but I don't get why everyone enjoys this fic so much.

Though, on the flip side, I'm ecstatic that someone here is finally posting a video game rec. I hope you continue to do so.
