RR -- Alternate Universe

  • Feb. 5th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
AU week is over! I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we did. Now it's your turn to rec your favorite fics in alternate realities/universes.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme.
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Alternate Universe

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Title: The World on His Wrist
Author: [livejournal.com profile] bendingsignpost
Summary: First, he is shot in Afghanistan. Second, he wakes to a phone call in Chelmsford, Essex. Third is pain, fourth is normalcy, fifth is agony and sixth is confusion. By the eighth, he's lost track. (John-centric AU)

Prologue (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/16509.html#cutid1) - Part One (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/16668.html) - Part Two (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/17066.html) - Part Three - Part Four (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/18036.html) - Part Five (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/18635.html) - Part Six (”http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/19152.html”) - Epilogue (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/19443.html)

This is one epic of a Sherlock AU! I love how bendingsignpost creates other worlds based on the slight nuances that might have happened in canon. John is quite brillant in it and he's figured out a plan for telling which world he's in. His watches according to the universe that he wakes up in: Left Analogue for London (Baker Street)/BBC 'verse, left Digital for London (Grant Road), right Analogue for Afghanistan, and right Digital for Chelmsford. This was written pre-season 2, so the epic showdown at the pool ends quite differently in a few worlds! I really hope that you check this out, especially if you appreciate BAMF!John~ There is a sequel too, Elsewhere Come Morning (http://bendingsignpost.livejournal.com/19896.html), that is still a WIP.

Brilliant fic, and a great rec for AU week, what with there being *four AUs* in it. Thanks for reccing it; I've been reading it as a WIP, and had missed the most recent chapter. ;)

Summary: Another HDM fic, but I just couldn't resist. Born to a witch and a human, people know Sherlock will be unusual from the start. John Watson, on the other hand, seems perfectly ordinary, except for his dæmon...

An intense attraction ignites between the two men as they uncover a conspiracy that threatens everything they’ve ever known, but Sherlock’s as much hunted as hunter, and everyone close to him is in deadly danger. Can he solve the case in time to save himself and John?

Recs 2/2
13th Warrior

Evening (http://www.mlyn.net/fic/13w_evening1.html) by [livejournal.com profile] mlyn
Summary: In late March 2008, I was telling a fellow fan that it might be fun to write cliché-fic for The 13th Warrior fandom. I decided it would have to be a present-day AU, and work off the ancient romance-novel trope of a marriage of convenience, and worked up a sketchy idea for a ridiculous plot. Then, while I was traveling in Norway in June 2008, I started writing it. The result is far less silly than I originally envisioned, but still a present-day AU with a romance novel plot device.

CSI/CSI NY/CSI Miami:

Sylum Clan Series (http://bjjones.livejournal.com/156345.html) by [livejournal.com profile] bjjones
Summary: The Sylum Clan is the Vampire Clan that calls almost the whole United States their territory. This are the stories of the fights for territories, revenge, political warfare and amidst that finding your other half. (stupid summary is being stupid. sorry)

Fast and the Furious Series

Unfinished Business (http://assignations.org/maygra/speed/unfinished.html) by [livejournal.com profile] maygra
Summary: An alternative end to the first movie. with its sequels Shifting Gears (http://assignations.org/maygra/speed/shifting_gears.html), Bella Morte (http://assignations.org/maygra/speed/bellamorte.html), Damage (http://assignations.org/maygra/speed/damage.html) and a couple of codas that can be found on the website.

There in Nine Flat (http://www.khaleesian.com/therein9.html) by [livejournal.com profile] khaleesian
Summary: Sometimes he tried to remember. He tried to remember back to the beginning, where the whole long story began. It was hard though, pinpointing just where it all started, trying to define the moment exactly.
Plus, nowadays he wasn’t really overwhelmed with free time.
But some evenings when he could grab a minute, he sat on the porch and watched the sunset over their little curve of bay and wondered to himself, just when, just when did this whole thing begin?

Sharpe

Sharpe's Dragon, or, How Richard Sharpe was gazetted into the wrong service (http://archiveofourown.org/works/129908/chapters/184803) and the Sequel (http://archiveofourown.org/works/136503) by [livejournal.com profile] blackdisa
Summary: Northern Portugal, the winter of 1811. Two armies watch each other over the border, waiting for the next year's campaigning. Alone on a mission beyond enemy lines, Moncey, the only draconic Exploring Officer in Wellington's army, meets a rag-tag band of Greenjackets, led by a Rifleman as fierce and feral as he is. The friendship they strike up will change both of their lives forever...

There are loads more recs like [livejournal.com profile] house_of_lantis Kradam Fanfiction where you can find a lot of AUs or [livejournal.com profile] aramuin and her AU stories (again RPS). There are awesome NCIS AUs by [livejournal.com profile] ladyra and [livejournal.com profile] xanthelj and many other fandoms with awesome stories, but I hope the ones I linked will offer you something to read and enjoy.

So many recs! Half the stories you've recced (Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, Jaws, The Republic of Heaven, Two-Two-One-Bravo Baker, Performance in a Leading Role, Observations on Sentinels and Guides in Victorian London, Unfinished Business) I've read and absolutely loved, and the rest I've never heard of. Particularly intrigued by the Brokeback Mountain fics and the H50 bakery AU.
