Summary: John has time to realize that those fingers are webbed and then the involuntary laughter about finding a mermaid interferes with his already questionable grip on breathing, and he passes out.
Review: In this fantastic AU, John and the SGA team arrive at Atlantis without Rodney being a part of their expedition from Earth. After a small mishaps with a rotted railing, John soon discovers (or, more precisely, is discovered) Rodney when the merman saves him from drowning in the frigid sea. It doesn’t take long for the alien to incorporate himself into their way of life as he berates them for their lack of intelligence and spends his nights in John’s tub.
This is, without a doubt, one of my most favorite SGA fic and, coincidentally, my most favorite SGA Author. You’ll be hearing about SardonicSmiley quite a bit in my upcoming future SGA recs. Now, for all of you that are fans of The Little Mermaid, prepare to be blown away as you engage in this humorous tail (ha! ) that’s both original and canon.
This fic is gorgeous. I love the way Rodney is a “mermaid” and yet not in the traditional sense of the word. I love that he doesn’t automatically understand English like all of the other aliens seem to-- that he speaks in whistles and clicks and, occasionally, Ancient. I love the fact that despite his lack of language, he still manages to get his point across in a decidedly snarky way that is entirely Rodney. I’m beyond amused that the first few words he learns are “idiots” and “morons.”
SardonicSmiley always seems to weave so much life and magic into the SGA fics she writes. Despite how short some of them are, they’re a delight to read and everything you could hope for in a fic.
Excerpt: When John steps into the room, the merman's gaze darts towards him. The man jerks towards John, recoiling when the cuff on his wrist catches. The whistles and clicks take on a different quality, almost desperate, the merman's gaze fixed and pleading on John.
And, really, there's nothing that John can do at that point but go to him. Carson shouts, trying to catch John's shoulder. John ignores him, sidestepping on his way to the merman. The spines raised across his skin look sharp, tinted blue, and John kneels in front of him.
Carson, from behind John, sounds tense when he says, "Major, I'm not sure you should be—"
John raises one hand, saying, "Sh," and reaches out slowly to the merman's bound wrist. John is inches away when the spines all slide back into the man's body, and his words change, tone and sound, everything, though it still makes no sense to John.
Still, the guy looks scared witless, so John says, "It's okay, buddy, you're fine now," reaching out to the closest soldier without looking away from the merman to order, "Keys," and, after a moments hesitation, he's given them.
The merman pulls his arms up to his chest as soon as his wrist is released, still kneeling, still babbling. Carson steps up and the merman's blue eyes go huge, his voice taking on an angry tone, the spines sliding out again.
John says, waving Carson back, "You might want to stay back. I don't think you made a very good first impression."
Carson makes a huffing sound, "Major, I don't know what you think you're doing, but this...man...was found kneeling over you out on one of the lower docks and—"
"And he saved my life." John rocks back on his heels, rising to his feet and turning to face Carson, raising his eyebrows. "I was, uh, exploring one of the new areas of the city and some of the floor must have been rotted through. I almost drowned."

I haven't actually read all that many SardonicSmiley fics. Somewhere along the way I got it into my head that she writes nothing but heavy angst and I have to be in the mood for that.
Basically, I'm intimidated. BUT SOMEDAY I WILL READ THEM ALL. *determined*
Huh, really? *scratches head, pulls up SardonicSmiley's site* Well, she does seems to enjoy Rodney whump, but it's not always super angsty. A lot of her fics are AU, actually (for example, if you like/have seen Iron Man, she has an AU/Fusion (http://smiley.zonezine.net/html/35560.html) where Rodney is Iron Man that's pretty good. Um, I don't remember that being really angsty, though it has it's moments as fics always do when one of the main character's lives are in danger. And there's always this one (http://smiley.zonezine.net/html/52952.html) where John's a caveman and sees Rodney as his mate.
*grins* See, I love heavy angst (so long as it has a happy ending, of course), so that wouldn't be an issue for me. Of course, I also adore humor/crack fic as well. I guess I tend to love side with either ends of the extremes and read the middle category last. lol
I suggest avoiding Permutationality (a fic I will be reccing at some point) at all costs if you dislike whump as Rodney's captured by the wraith and essentially develops something not unlike Stockholm Syndrome with them. Though, it's gorgeous because his time with the wraith humanizes (well, perhaps not human, but it certainly gives you more depth, sympathy, and understanding).
I think I've actually skimmed that fic, and will definitely be avoiding it. I have no doubt it's wonderfully done, though, because all her fic is. It skims a little too close to Rodney/Wraith fic, and I just can't read about the Wraith like that. Wraith/Human fics make me extremely uncomfortable.
kjaf; Thanks for the links ♥
*laughs* See, I didn't know how close Permutationality was to Rodney/Wraith fic when I read it, but by the end of it... er, well, I'd really liked it. So, brace yourself in the future because I'll be reccing a John/Wraith fic (though, only one I think-- the fics have to be done just right). Though, I should probably mention that while John/Wraith is in the fic, it doesn't end that way and there's no happily ever after for them (how could there be? It's a wraith). xD
Also, those two fics probably would have creeped me out a lot more if I hadn't see the AU Vegas episode in the last season. The wraith in that episode disguised as a human (http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Punk_Wraith)? He was, uh, surprisingly... hot. o.o;; (Don't judge me! I used to be a goth in highschool, I can't help it! ;__;)
Mmm, yeah. I'm going to skip the John/Wraith (or Human/Rodney) fics you rec in the future - I'll see the pairing and just scroll on by.
LOL A lot of people found the Vegas Wraith hot ;) I'm just far too creeped out by them (and their teeth, ugh) to find them hot. But I have a "live and let live" attitude, so if it's your thing, there's no judging here, just a polite, "I'm not interested in that". And perhaps some wondering on why and how, but no judging.
Have you read Auburn's one very long Wraith/Human fic?
Although, I have to admit that more often than not I do tend to stick with my favorite pairing and when I do decide to stray, it tends to just be with my favorite character and someone else. For example, SGA: John/Rodney is my favorite in the fandom, but I'm not opposed to Rodney/Radek, Rodney/Ronon, OT4,or even John/Radek, John/Wraith.
Then again, in other fandoms (let's say Harry Potter), I'll ship just about any good pairing (Slash or femslash, though I've never read femslash in HP) I can get my fandoms on. All the way from my most favorite ship Snape/Harry to Snape/Sirius, Snape/Luna (one of my rare het ships), Snape/Dumbledore, Snape/Remus, Snape/Sir Cadogan (portrait!), Harry/Fenris, Harry/Draco, Harry/Lucius, Harry/ANYONE, Snape/James, Harry/Tom Riddle, Harry Dudley, Ron/Draco, Snape/Ron, Snape/ANYONE, Fred/George, Harry/Luna, erm... anyone/anyone? xD
Even more strange, there are fandoms like Star Trek where I pretty much exclusively read Kirk/Spock. I'll read some Gen fic occasionally and have only once or twice indulged in Chekov/Sulu or a very one-sided Spock/Spock's childhood bully. I guess it just depends on the fandom for me. *hums thoughtfully*
Oooh, good motto to live by! :D I tend to feel pretty much the same way. ^^ Not a lot really bothers me in that sense, I suppose. Even if I don't happen to ship a pairing, I don't let it bother me (unless that pairing involves a mary-sue-- all bets are off then since I read fic to become immersed, enjoy it, and disassociate with myself. Mary-Sue fic defeats that purpose and annoys me to no end. xD).
Um, no, don't think so? I've read
Haha, Harry Potter was my first fandom :P I was into it back before I was into slash - in fact, I remember skipping through Harry/Draco scenes. Have you read that 3 million word Harry/Draco fic? I hear it's amazingly epic.
LOL Kirk/Spock is my Star Trek OTP :P I haven't read much for it, but I have this huuuuge list of fics and reclists I've always meant to go through. It makes me happy you ship it too :P Do you have a delicious account? I wouldn't mind going through it!
There's really only a few things that are an immediate "No" for me. Human/Wraith fics are one and so is incest. I have a brother, and I can't separate my emotions from the fic enough not to be bothered by it. But I don't begrudge people who read it :P I'm envious of your ability not to be bothered *and* your ability to multiship :)
Oh, Auburn's fic. My curiosity damns me, you see. I get ~curious~ and then I give in and read fic that *horrifies* me. Auburn's super long fic piqued my curiosity, and I started skimming, and it was like a train wreck for me: horrifying, but so difficult to look away. And now I'll never forget it~
Well, either way, I'm really happy to see someone reccing SGA fic. I don't want people to forget about this fandom ;) So thank you very much ♥!
Umm, no, I don't think I've read that H/D fic. LOL! I'm not usually one that's able to stick around for longer than 150,000+ words at the most (because I'm ADHD and it's only too easy for me to loose interest). Currently, though, I'm reading what is no doubt the longest fic I'll have ever read. It's a general (heavily featuring both Snape and Draco-- who is WONDERFULLY portrayed) HP fic called, "A Year Like None Other (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=5036)" by AspenInTheSun. It's over 760,000 words and it is SUPERB. ♥ It's on SkyeHawke and it has over 2,700 reviews! xD That's very rare on sites that aren't huge like FF.net or LJ. Totally hoping to be reccing it on Epic_Recs after I finish it (93/99 chapters left!).
Summary: A letter from home? A letter from family?
Well, Harry Potter knows he has neither, but all the same, it starts with a letter from Surrey. It can't be anything good, so Harry's determined to ignore it. But then, his evil schoolmate rival spots the letter and his slimy excuse for a teacher intercepts it and forces him to read it. And that sends Harry down a path he'd never have walked on his own.
It will be a year of big changes, a year of great pain, and a year of confronting worst fears. It will be a year of surprising discoveries, of finding true strength, of finding out that first impressions of a person's true colours do not always ring true. It will be a year of paradigm shifts.
And from the most unexpected sources, Harry will have a chance to have that which he has never known: a home ... and a family.
I will warn you though, it has a LOT of angst at certain parts of the fic-- erm, < spoiler >because Harry ends up tortured on Voldemort's orders by Lucius. Snape is there to take care of him afterwards and eventually Snape, Harry, and Draco become a family</ spoiler > (after several hundred thousand words because it sincerely TAKES THAT LONG to get them there, but it's totally worth it in the end). It's SO GORGEOUS. ♥ One moment it'll have me squeeing with happiness or cuteness and the next Harry or Draco's insecurities come out and you just want to clutch them all close and hug 'em. I know you're not so big on angst, but if ever there was a fic for you to read it regardless (if you were still up to reading HP fic, of course), I'd recommend that it be this one. ♥
Heh! Thank you! *grins* I'm bothered by very little in the world of fanfic. So much so, in fact, that I tend to consider "incest" as a softcore kink (not quite vanilla, but something that barely registers on my radar anymore)-- and, mind you, I have five siblings. xD Actually, the Supernatural fandom tends to have a way of killing off your "morals" in a sense when it comes to kinks-- you know, considering the two main slash ships are either incest or blasphemy (male!Angel/male!Human). I'm not sure if my ability to be unbothered is a good thing or a bad thing. xD Strangely enough, BDSM is almost always an instant no for me (I can't explain why... especially seeing as I understand the lifestyle and have friends who are a part of it)-- there are always exceptions, however, few as they may be.
Re: Auburn's Fic: LOL! I know exactly what you mean! I've experienced the exact same scenario recently in K/S fandom. I was so HORRIFIED and furious at the fic I was reading-- what was most disturbing is that the characters were in character despite the fact that Spock was horribly abusive to Kirk. Despite how much it pissed me off, I couldn't stop READING it. *face palm* What made me the most peeved off, however, was that the whole "abuse" situation was cleared up and forgiven (via the "magic cock" scenario) in the last 2,000 words after 20,000+ words of abuse! WTF! D< *rips out hair in remembrance* lol!
No problem! :D I love SGA fandom and one of my biggest fears (fandom-wise) is that the fandom/fic will die away and the writing will disappear from the web entirely. ): That's NOT ACCEPTABLE! XD
God, I talk too much. Sorry that I've rambled on long enough to take up two posts! *head desk*
LOL AH. Yeah, it's super long, but supposedly it has fantastic world-building and the OC's are super amazing. My friend is in love with it :D
Ooo, that fic looks *really* good. I may have to bookmark it for later reading :D Thank you for the link and the summary. I actually like spoilers, so thanks for the heads up - I like going into a fic knowing what's coming, so I can emotionally prepare myself. Heavy angst fics are the ones I have to prepare myself for, so I don't read them as often (I get so emotionally invested). But generally speaking, if a fic is angsty, then it *has* to have a happy ending. tl;dr - thanks for the rec! Even if it's angsty, I'll still give it a read :D
