Review:
This is the first hockey RPF I ever read, and I fear I’ve been spoiled as this will be the story by which all others will be judged. Once I started reading, I found that I couldn’t put this story down; in fact I stayed up until 4 AM just to finish it in one go. As I finished I almost wished it was a story I hadn’t read yet so I could have the joy of rediscovering it all over again.
I think I was hooked by the idea of the two “rivals” falling for one another. If you are unfamiliar with hockey, both players came into the league at the same time, on separate teams, and both are a joy to watch. One is a traditional, hard working, dedicated and driven player from Canada who has a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal. The other is a dynamic, passionate, hard playing, fun loving player from Russia who has not yet achieved the Cup or a gold medal. Both are absolutely enjoyable to watch but they have very different styles of play so it’s hard to really compare them and call one the better player (unless, of course, you are a Capitals or Penguins fan). However because they both entered the league at the same time they are often pitted against one another as rivals by the media and, sometimes even, the league. Both are also considered to be the public faces of hockey.
There were so many little things I enjoy in any story that were included here besides the rivals falling for one another and opposites attract angle. I liked the misunderstandings, the little hints of jealousy as feelings were realized, the sportsmanship involved with two rivals on opposite teams challenging and helping each other to elevate their level of play on and off the ice. There were strong friendships and family relationships throughout that each character was able to rely upon when needed. I also enjoyed the little details like how the patterns of speech were written. Ovechkin is Russian, and while he has learned English, he speaks it like a non native speaker and his dialogue is written that way. The way his dialogue is written doesn’t detract from the story, it adds to it. Overall I liked the contrasts shown between the two characters, who are portrayed as fundamentally different in their personalities as they are in game play. Both approached their eventual public outing in separate fashions, yet both reactions seemed to fit in with the story and characterizations. And, finally, their story had a happy and satisfying ending.

I don't remember any overly long sections regarding game play, in fact that was one of the things I liked about this story. If I remember right the game sections tended to be a single sentence to just a paragraph or two and were more about things that happened in games that referred back to various wagers and setting up later interaction between the two main characters.
I think. I just spent the whole day reading it and now a rereading choice bits and wallowing in it all over again. I'm completely gutted. to What an amazing story!
I've never heard of hockey RPS and I freaking LOVED it. And no, you don't need to know hockey to enjoy it. It's the characterizations that won me over. I'm a Canadian so I know Sidney Crosby won the gold medal but that's about it.
Gahhh. I'm a complete sucker for angst with a happy ending and this one was perfection. Thanks again.
I had exactly the same amount of knowledge as you about hockey, and for the same reasons!!
Very cute fic! I never ever thought I'd read a RPS fic about hockey!
But I did, and it was wonderful!!
I didn't either, but I'm with you, and I'm so glad I did! :-)
I hope to see it recc-ed some more because there are so many other stories out there that are just amazing.
I've spent the last few days off and on searching out more fic in the hockey fandom and I definitely have a few more bookmarked on my to-read list. :-)
I love hockey but I don't really follow it now so it would have too be good writing for me to be drawn into it.
Having said that, my first thoughts of slash were making up stories about Mark Messier and other Oilers before I even knew slash existed. So the idea of passionate, inarticulate hockey players falling for each other is, I think, part of my genetic make up.
Faithbeckett is well known for her dramatic epics. She wrote different stories with Sid/Ovie, Sid/Geno, Briere/Giroux.
Chica_Charlie writes some great shorts for mainly Blackhawks, but she dabbles with other teams. She was in J2 back in the day.
Impertinence is a good author who writes long fic. She posts chatfic as well. She also has friends who write great fic as well, and she will typically rec them.
Check out A03's Hockey RPF list and the 2mins4slashing comm. Those have your best bets. Yuletide also has some great stuff come out of it for hockey.
Jonathan Toews/Patrick Kane is a big one if you are into the Blackhawks. Duncan Keith/Brent Seabrook as well, even though that has tapered off in the recent year.
Oilers; Taylor Hall/Jordan Eberle - which they make easy
Post Bruins win, there was a large Marchland/Seguin thing, since they got matching tattoos and all the shirtless photos.
Penguins - Sid/Geno
Um, if you want any details, message me. I'll go dig up info and stuff.
There was also a huge upswing in fic around the 2010 Olympics. Second half of the season usually has a lot more fic coming out of it than the first. (All-Stars weekend really does get a lot of fic centered on it)
I didn't know a thing in the world about hockey before reading this, but loved this fic so much! It was definitely the characterisations and relationships that won me over. I'm normally weary of overly preachy fic, but what a powerful coming out sequence as well...
One of my favourite fics ever, I think. And now, to read it again... I think so!!
Thanks again for the rec, I normally don't read RPF, this is the only the second RPF fic I've really liked.
Oh, and that coming out sequence? Yeah, that was the cherry on top of the sundae wasn't it? :-)
Thanks for the awesome rec!
