Summary:
When Brad's ex-wife dies and Brad and Nate find themselves in charge of Brad's three sons, things get complicated.
Review:
Well done domestic fic giving a fairly realistic portrayal of families is a favorite of mine. As I was reading, I wasn’t sure how this story was going to end, nor was I entirely sure how I wanted to see it end. Brad and Nate are together, post-war and struggling to temporarily take care of Brad’s three children, Ray, Walt, and James, while searching for an adoptive family to take the three boys.
I’ll admit that at first I was a little taken aback at the thought of taking Ray, Walt, and James and basically de-aging them, but these three little boys absolutely worked here and still retained their core characteristics: Ray is too smart for his own good, Walt too sensitive, and James too impressionable. After the first scene with the kids tearing up their room, I was sold on them. The relationship between Brad and Nate is enjoyable. They have a strong foundation but, realistically, start to crack under the strain of three kids added to the mix and I enjoyed watching them slip apart but pull themselves back together.
While domestic and kidfic this story isn’t fluffy and saccharine which is a large part of its charm. It is family drama and relationships in their messy glory. Overall a very satisfying read.
