Vid Recs -- Recut movie trailers

  • Jul. 12th, 2007 at 1:46 PM

First, there's something I have to admit up front: I'm not a fan of tv vids.  Seriously, I see all these vid recs floating around for various fandoms and I check them out and I just don't get the appeal.  Clearly there's something I'm missing, but vids tend to leave me cold.  All of which boils down to this: you aren't going to see much in the way of vid recs here and when you do, it's probably not going to be in any of my fanfic fandoms.

That said, OMG, I've just discovered the coolest vids *ever*!  They're all based around the same conceit: movie trailers that are completely misleading.  For example, a well-known horror movie recut into a romantic comedy trailer.  Or a children's movie edited to look like it's actually a horror movie.  Gah.  I can't explain in such a way that truly encompasses the awesomeness of seeing a trailer of When Harry Met Sally as a psycho thriller, so I'm just going to give you the link and tell you to check it out.  Trust me, you'll get a laugh out of it.

All of the vids below are on YouTube.

When Harry Met Sally -- the Horror Remix

Shining (The Shining as a romantic comedy)

Scary Mary (Mary Poppins as you've never seen her before!)

Sleepless in Seattle (apparently romantic comedies are just rife with horror cliches...)

Those were awesome; thank you for sharing - though, the Shining was wasted on me as I've never seen the movie and don't know what it's about... (it's rather telling, though, that romantic comedy can so easily be turned into horror... *G*)

(side note - I'm sorry I haven't commented before, but I enjoy seeing your epic_recs)

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure I've seen all of the Shining either, though I did recognize the scene where the kid was writing out REDRUM (but under a kicky, sentimental tune, which was awesome:) Seriously, these really brightened my day. I'll see if I can't track down a few more -- I've got nothing to do at work for the next couple of days and this will kill time.

And no worries on the feedback. I love getting comments, of course, but I kind of view these recs as me giving much-belated feedback to authors that I've read and enjoyed in the past. Any comments I get from my readers is just a bonus:)

*g* I have enjoyed them - most of them, I do know already but it's very nice to be reminded - and then spend time getting reaquainted. *G*

And for sure the soundtracks were *incredible* for the trailers. Makes me even more aware of how the music affects what I'm feeling in a movie... Esp liked Mary Poppins and When Harry Met Sally. :D

I agree -- most of these stories I read a long time ago and reread to review them. I'm starting to view this entire community as a convenient place to look up fics I enjoy:)

The Mary Poppins one really blew me away because it's actually music *from the movie* with a few sound effects tossed in and yet it had a completely different feel to it when isolated. And the When Harry Met Sally one...wow, I say. Wow.

Oh, interesting, this is the second time I see someone mentioning these remixed trailers. Will go and watch them right now....

But what I really wanted to say was that I absolutely have the same difficulties as you regarding vids. Mostly I just shrug and go 'So what?' But there are a few where I understand what the vidder wanted to express and these work just right for me. In TS it's a vidder named Sally who did this funny little vid called 'Coffee Time' and I absolutly adore her 'Jim Dandy'.

Feel free to toss some links my way and I'll check them out!

I'm guessing you and I saw the same original post for the remixed trailers -- I have no shame in reccing something I've seen recced elsewhere:)

Yay! Feels great that I can give you something in return, because normally everyone in TS knows about all the stuff that *I* know. ;-)

Here's Sally's website:

Best to watch Jim Dandy first and Coffee Time second, because - although they're not related - they make sense that way because of Jim's last remark in Jim Dandy!

She even has a new one that had me hooting with laughter!

And Coffee Time has been nomed for the Light My Fire Awards. You know the LMFA-website?

I don't think you got it from the same person's LJ where I saw them mentioned. Or do you read Mirabella? She's got nothing to do with any TV fandoms, she's heavy into anime just now.

BTW, the Scary Mary trailer reminded me that when I watched that movie as a little girl I was scared near to death by the scene where all the other nannies were blown away... :bibber:

Um, I don't think I've heard of Mirabella, but if she's heavily into anime, I might be interested. I'm desperate for some useful anime recs.

Well, I cannot really recomend her as a person because imo she's a queen bitch and royal pain in the ass - I just occasionally visit her LJ because I knew her in LOTR and tend to keep checking what the people I knew then are up to now. Anyhow her LJ's named mirabellawotr.
