  • Sep. 6th, 2011 at 7:44 AM
This is a long overdue send off to the wonderfuld [livejournal.com profile] cheetahanabel who has left just our ranks. Let us say goodbye by giving her a long list of fics to enjoy. She is particularly interested in:

- Non-canon pairing fics
- Small fandoms
- Glee
- Stargate: Atlantis
- Harry Potter
- Inception

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
- WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

So, I'm not sure what pairings you like in Glee, or what fic you've read, so I am bringing you a smattering of fic recs!

  • Five Stages (http://archiveofourown.org/works/173558/chapters/253650#comment_224879) by thememoriesfire is the first in a rather long series that focuses on Santana. It's femslash but it's more then that--I'm not sure I can accurately describe what she does here. It's amazingly written and brilliant in both scope and pacing, so I strongly recommend it. It is REALLY long, though, so fair warning. ;)

  • Most Verse (http://miggy.livejournal.com/tag/fanfiction:%20glee:%20mostverse) by [livejournal.com profile] miggy is a gen series that focuses on Kurt and Rachel and their life after Glee. It, too, is very long and it deals with some very sensitive subjects (including eating disorders). Kurt and Rachel in NYC as apartment mates, without actually even liking each other? (This was started before they were friends) and just--yes! Glorious!

  • Endgame (http://kurt-blaine.livejournal.com/397520.html) by [livejournal.com profile] villageidiot is a short humor piece that has a slight Kurt/Blaine slant. Basically, Blaine and Kurt are friends and hang out all the time, but Blaine hasn't met any of Kurt's other friends. So he does. Just--it's hilarious and touching and I seriously, SERIOUSLY, wish some of these conversations would happen on the show. :)

  • You and Her Loathing This Cruel World (http://archiveofourown.org/works/221542) by thememoriesfire is an alternative look at the first season of Glee--what if Kurt and Quinn slept together? And Quinn got pregnant? Kurt/Sam and Quinn/Rachel. This one is very fairytaleesque but super cute and fun.

    Title: White Rabbit
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] sparrowshellcat
Fandom: Chronicles of Riddick/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    Pairing(s): Richard B. Riddick/Xander Harris
    Rating: R
Warning: Character death, attempted rape, violence, mpreg, m/m relationship.
    Word Count: 163,816
Author Summary: Xander Harris has no idea that he is adopted. But in the span of a week, he not only finds out that his parents aren't his birth parents, manages to get put into "protective house arrest" by his friends (and he's not even really sure why), and gets sent into space, where he literally lands on the head of the most wanted convict in the verse. Exploring space with a criminal sounds like a terrifying idea, especially as things start getting stranger and he starts to think even more and more that his birth parents might not have been human.

This is a giant (and I do mean giant) Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddik and Buffy Fusion in which Xander's parents were not originally from earth. When Angel(us) convinces his friends that Xander was the one who beat him up, they try a spell and of course that goes terribly wrong. He lands in Dark Athena, the prison colony that is supposedly escape-proof, right on top of Riddick, the most dangerous man in the universe.

What follows is an amazing ride from Pre-series Riddick canon through the two movies and beyond. The writing is solid, the story engaging and character growth palpable — of course Xander changes slowly, a thing that he himself admits, but it is a slow process. I especially like the handling of the whole friend/family situation back on earth. It's one of the few stories I've read so far that actually make Jessica Harris a fully fleshed-out character.

All in all a good, satisfying read. And although the author is playing with the thought of writing more in this 'verse it is a standalone story (albeit with a small cliffhanger at the end).

In 13 DW parts (each part linked to the next chapter):
    PART 1 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/46517.html) | PART 2 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/46760.html) | PART 3 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/46862.html) | PART 4 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/47126.html) | PART 5 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/47383.html) | PART 6 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/47702.html) | PART 7 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/48041.html) | PART 8 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/48208.html) | PART 9 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/48572.html) | PART 10 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/48762.html) | PART 11 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/49086.html) | PART 12 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/49342.html) | PART 13 (http://sparrowshellcat.dreamwidth.org/49457.html)

    Title: By Way Of Sorrow
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] coldthermistor
    Fandom: Inception
Rating: (Author puts down NC-17 for gore and character death) PG-15
    Characters: Arthur, Eames, Cobb
    Wordcount:20.000
Summary: Cobb jumps, on that anniversary night, with Mal. Arthur is left to pick up the pieces. Eames is patient. Arthur/Eames, implied one-sided Arthur/Cobb.

This is a what-if-Cobb had jumped story where Arthur is left behind and he struggles to care for the kids and to handle Mal's parents and then Eames shows up at his doorstep. It's intense; Arthur is broken by his friends' death and he's afraid that he'll lose his grip on reality as well. Eames just wants to help.

It's an interesting and thoughtful take on one of the central problems of the original movie, and though gritty and a bit raw it left me satisfied at the end, which is something I need in difficult fics.

    Part I (http://coldthermistor.livejournal.com/7657.html) | Part II (http://coldthermistor.livejournal.com/7194.html) | Part III (http://coldthermistor.livejournal.com/6978.html)

Well, I don't think I can help you with the mpreg, but there's a rather old one on Twisting the Hellmouth, simply titled 'The Chronicles of Riddick: The Underverse' (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-8042/aewnaur+The+Chronicles+of+Riddick+The+Underverse.htm) which was quite enjoyable, if I remember correctly.

That's all I can think of, at the top of my head, but I think there might be a bit more. If you're at all interested in the Harry Potter Fandom, then I know that there were two or three fics worth reading on that side of the crossover front, but although I'm sure they were on AFF.net, they don't seem to have survived the last five years or so.

But there is a Harry/Xander/Riddik fic called Dehctiws (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3617005/1/Dehctiws) which is an enjoyable enough read, although I have my issues with first person narration.

And should you enjoy a bit of Het once in a while, The Firefly Chronicles are an excellent merging of both Firefly and Riddick canon, though (as in most Riddick crossovers) it doesn't bring all that many new things into the plotline.

Sorry, this is all I have in my bookmarks. Hope you can find anything at all to satisfy your Riddick Crossover urge.

    Glee Rec
Stars and Birds (http://archiveofourown.org/works/236654) by carolinecrane (T)

    Title : Stars and Birds
    Author : carolinecrane
    Fandom : Glee
Pairings : Kurt Hummel/Noah Puckerman, Finn Hudson/Will Schuester
    Categories : Crossover, Alternate Universe
    Length : Long (~ 18500 words)

Author in LJ : [livejournal.com profile] carolinecrane

Summary: It's season whatever of Project Runway, and Kurt's made it to the top seven and the dreaded menswear challenge. The assignment: To design a red carpet-worthy look for Broadway star Will Schuester to wear to the Tonys. Kurt's the only designer smart enough to find a way around tailoring pants, but he's relying on a model he's never worked with before to sell his concept to the judges and to Will. Enter Noah Puckerman, runway model. He knows how to work a runway, and he's determined to see that Kurt wins.

Review : A well-done Fusion from one of my favorite author in the Glee fandom. Carolincrane always makes me believe her stories could happen even when there are total AU.

    Harry Potter Recs
    Title: The Loveseat (http://the-con-cept.insanejournal.com/412851.html?format=light)
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] the_con_cept
    Pairing: Snape/Harry
Genre: Crack, humor, romance, letter correspondence/communication
    Rating/Length: Long ( 17,000 words)
    Warnings: N/A

Summary: Harry buys a second-hand sofa and gets more than he ever anticipated.

Review: Harry buys a couch and soon discovers it's enchanted when he finds a note wedged between the cushions. When Harry next sits on the sofa, he decides to give the new journal Hermione had bought him a try. He only manages a few sentences before he rips the page out in disgust with his "whiny" feelings and leaves the page a crinkled up ball on the couch. A few days later he discovers a scathing, hateful response that leaves him stunned, disturbed, and furious. And thus begins a very snarky (as well as amusing) correspondence that prompts Harry to find out his correspondent's secret identity.

This fic is brilliantly hilarious as most of AbstractConcept's fics tend to be. Somehow, she manages to seamlessly intertwine a hilarious cracky sense of humor with an underlining serious (and steamy) romance. This is the type of fic that will have you crying with laughter one minute, frustrated for Harry the next, and on the edge of your seat the entire time hoping it'll never end.

Everyone is perfectly in character and absolutely charming: Ron as Harry's faithful (if doubtful of his sanity) friend, Hermione as an intelligent (if somewhat concerned) healer who's always willing to help, and even Neville who relates Harry's couch problem with a past encounter he'd had with depressed gladioli (which he'd resolved by putting prozac in the plant's water). My heart goes out to poor, outraged Draco who unwillingly becomes Harry's go-to source as he tries to discover Snape's identity (and drives the Slytherin crazy in the process).

Excerpt: Harry groaned. He collapsed in a seat across from his friend. He had to be careful because Ron didn’t have a private office, so Harry leant forward and tried to talk without moving his lips very much. “I think my sofa’s been sending me letters,” he muttered.

Now Ron looked concerned. “Oh. Er . . . oh. Really?” he said, sounding desperately casual. “What sort of letters? Like, like, buy genuine wood polish, the other gets in my grain and itches, sort of thing?”

“Ron! This is serious! I fell asleep last night and this morning there was a letter between the cushions and it said it hoped Satan buggered me with a pitchfork or something.”

“Sounds like you need to be treating your furniture with a bit more TLC, mate,” Ron said, staring.

“It isn’t funny! My CHAIR HAS GONE MAD!” Harry shouted.

    Re: Harry Potter Recs
    Title: Life In Kind (http://community.livejournal.com/snape_after_dh/6748.html?format=light)
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] libby_drew
    Pairing: Snape/Harry
    Genre: portrait!fic, romance, drama
    Rating/Length: Medium (10,487 words)
Warnings: infidelity (Ginny), not a death fic- throughout most of the fic Snape appears to be permanently deceased

Summary: Harry believes Snape deserves to be immortalised. As usual, he rushes in where angels fear to tread.

Review: After the war, Harry notices that Snape does not have a headmaster's portrait at Hogwarts (or anywhere else, for that matter). Deeming this unfair, Harry decides to take matters into his own hands and make one himself. As Harry follows the Master Painter's instructions, he begins to experience strange dreams and, one day, after he awakens from one, Snape is animated. The portrait is no where near done when this happens. It's just a collection of outlines and smudges of paint and yet, Snape's alive (in the portrait sense of the word) and wastes no time being his usual sarcastic self.

This fic is gorgeous. The ways it's written as Harry paints Snape is almost poetic and it vividly draws the scene in your mind with ease. Admittedly, there is infidelity, but it's subtle as Ginny is only ever mentioned a few times throughout the fic. Ordinarily, I'd completely turn my nose up and snub any fic containing infidelity (unless, of course, it's the purpose of the fic and there's much h/c, groveling, and forgiveness to be had), but oddly enough Libby_Drew wrote it tastefully and it only mildly disturbed my sensitivities. The joy I received from reading the fic as a whole far outweighed the minor discomfort it gave me. So, if you have an infidelity squick as I do, you may find this fic is worth treading into potential unease.

Oh, and for anyone concerned about the "not a death fic" label? Please rest assured that while Snape appear to be deceased throughout most of the fic, it's not permanent.

Excerpt: He outlines everything from the neck up first. He's never drawn anything better than a stick figure in his entire life, but his wand guides his hand. Before his eyes, Snape's face takes shape, and his eyes judge Harry from beneath a curtain of hair.

Harry pulls self-consciously at his t-shirt and reloads the tip of his wand with paint.

When he next touches it to the canvas, it spreads a black stain behind it. With a small triumphant smile, he begins to paint Snape's hair. As he does, the Master Painter's words ring through his head.

"If you must insist on this…folly, Mr. Potter, then please, please…I beg of you. Follow my instructions to the letter."

    "Why?"

"You have no idea what you're meddling in. Please reconsider. There is a reason Master Snape's portrait was never commissioned."

    "And that would be?"

Master Keepsay had kept his own counsel on that. But it doesn't matter. Harry has no use for the political prejudices of the time. Severus Snape, ex-Death Eater and hero (his hero) will grace a wizarding canvas. Somewhere.

    And Harry will paint it.

[More recs to come tomorrow! :) Sorry, I've only done so little, but as I'm a bit nervous, it's taking somewhat longer than I'd thought and I don't have time to make anymore tonight. ^^]

    Title: The Choosen (http://allecto.livejournal.com/421688.html)
    Author: [livejournal.com profile] allecto
    Pairing: Harry/Crabbe
Genre: Marriage of Convenience, bonding, humor, drama
    Rating/Length: Medium (9,869 words)
    Warnings: death fic

    Summary/Excerpt: Numbers never lied.

Vincent learned that at an early age, learned that numbers were the only things that didn't lie. Mothers lied, and fathers home from Azkaban, they lied a lot, and friends certainly lied. Numbers, though. Numbers never called him names, or sold him out to tall, cold men. Numbers were exactly what they claimed to be, and rather than manipulate him, Vincent could manipulate them. Numbers were cold, hard fact.

Numbers were telling him to marry Harry Potter.

Well, to be accurate (Vincent placed great store in accuracy), Hermione Granger was telling him to marry Potter. But she was using Arithmancy to do it, and having gotten his only N.E.W.T. O in Arithmancy, Vincent was inclined to believe her. Unfortunately.

Review: The Choosen is haunting and utterly superb. Allecto weaves a stunning Crabbe POV that is both gripping and engaging. She gives you a new, previously unseen side to Crabbe and Slytherins/purebloods mentality while still managing to keep a canon root. She gives you a glimpse into their strict sense of honor, lineage, and traditions (while still being anti-Voldemore) that Harry's never seen more than the fringe of and seamlessly makes you believe.

Crabbe is so well done and completely in character that it's almost disappointing when you finally finish the fic and realize it's most likely the first and last fic you'll ever find with such a perfect portrayal of him. Harry is exactly himself here as he is in canon-- stomping around in anger, oblivious to others, ignorant in his immaturity, and yet unable to stop himself from caring as he's swept into this mess against his will without full knowledge of what it all entails until it's too late.

Oh, and in case you missed the warning above, this is a death fic (where the characters die and stay dead.)-- something you will only ever see me recommend once or twice (ever), but please do not let that stop you because this fic is worth the angst. In the very beginning, there are hints that this bond Crabbe creates with Harry are damaging him-- not to mention the ominous phrase, "A life for a life."

The Choosen gives you more than enough time to prepare yourself for the death as Harry finds out about halfway through and Crabbe grows progressively more ill. While he's shocked to learn the full extent of the spell and how much Crabbe's giving up for him, Crabbe (and Snape) have known it all along and have long since accepted it for fact. The ending is still a little tearjerking, however, so keeping a box of tissues nearby is recommended. All in all, this fic is absolutely one of my most favorite HP fic despite the sad (and somehow perfect) ending.
