Review:
When an old friend tries to kill Steve using silver weapons, Danny’s curiosity leads him to an unbelievable discovery, one that has some unexpected consequences.

If there’s one silly trope that I really, really love in any fandom, it’s the ‘so-and-so’s a werewolf’ one. Delightfully versatile, it can make even the most mundane of scenes feel completely different; charging it with an intensity that wouldn’t be there otherwise. “Sympathy for the Werewolf” takes full advantage of that.

Picking-up towards the end of episode ‘Po’ipu’ (S1, Ep9), this fic is an interesting mix of supernatural ailments, government cover-ups, strong friendships, case fic, and blooming romance. Not necessarily in that order, either. While I was initially on the fence about reccing this – present tense writing is a challenge even at the best of times and it’s very rare that I enjoy it even when well executed – I finally decided to throw caution to the wind and let the story speak for itself, especially since it’s just that enjoyable.

Mermaid has done a wonderful job of avoiding some of more cliché aspects of werewolf!fic and instead given us something that is both entertaining and vaguely horrifying. Steve is not of the fluffy-bunny variety of werewolves, where he has complete control over his beast. No, Steve’s transformation and time spent in wolf form comes straight out of a horror movie, with the human side of him having very little control over what happens during the full moon, though thankfully nothing tragic occurs.

Overall, though I might have a few qualms about it, this fic is nevertheless an entertaining read that leaves the door open for other supernaturally inclined 5-0 fics.

Thank you so much for reviewing my story - I'm delighted that you enjoyed it!

You don't have to answer this question, but I'm just curious: what is it about present tense writing that you don't like? I have mostly written in the past tense, in other fandoms, but something about H50 makes me feel that the present tense is the way to go.

It's not a distinction I tend to notice when I'm reading other people's fics, though, so I'd be interested to know what difference it makes to you as a reader.

Anyway, thanks again for the rec; it really made my day :)

You're welcome! I really enjoyed the story, especially werwolf!Steve.

As for present tense writing, it's more of a personal preference than anything else. I find that most writers have difficulty making it work for them in the long run, even on a professional level, and tend to have the mindset of: when it works, it works, but when it doesn't, it really doesn't. That's just me, however, and obviously you've made it work for you so kudo on that! :)

This was a great rec. I enjoyed this fic thoroughly. Why is there no Hawaii Five-O tag for this community?

We tend not to add a fandom tag until the fandom has a certain number of recs under its belt, but I fully intend to be reccing more 5-0 fics in the future so a tag will pop-up soon. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Well I'm extremely late in getting back to you but better late than never, right? =/ I'm sorry for the delay; I could have sworn I replied but apparently it never made it.

I hope you enjoyed the fic and that you're doing well -- hows life been treating you?
