RR - Gen/Rare Pairing Fic

  • Jun. 29th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
Once more it's your time to share: what are your favorite Gen fics or fics featuring a rare pairing?

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
- WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

Today's Topic: Gen/Rare Pairings

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Thanks for the quick spot! I have just arrived home from a six hour journey and am a bit sleep deprived...

1 Sherlock, 1 Supernatural
Title: Apotheosis
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Pairing/Characters: Gen, John Watson, Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, Jim Moriarty, additional canon characters
Categories: post-canon, while you were out, bromance
Length: Long (~16,500 words)
Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence, Angst
Author: LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mad_maudlin, Fic LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 10leaguesbeyond, DW: Image (http://mad-maudlin.dreamwidth.org/profile)mad_maudlin (http://mad-maudlin.dreamwidth.org/)
Author Website: at AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Mad_Maudlin/pseuds/Mad_Maudlin)

Summary: John is given a chance to take the fight to Moriarty. You know what they say about whoever fights monsters...

Review: An immensely satisfying post-canon story, still one of my favorite Sherlock fics. As the summary says, after the swimming-pool explosion, John takes the fight to Moriarty. He's doing it for Sherlock, and misses him like mad, and the few occasional communications from Sherlock just aren't enough and oh, angsty and twisty and fast-paced and good.

Title: Black Soul Choir
Author: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing/Characters: Gen, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Castiel, additional canon characters
Categories: genderqueer/transfic
Length: Long (~25,000 words)
Warnings: Major Character Death(s)
Author: LJ: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko, DW: Image (http://busaikko.dreamwidth.org/profile)busaikko (http://busaikko.dreamwidth.org/)
Author Website: at AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/users/busaikko/pseuds/busaikko), website (http://busaikko.slashcity.org)

Summary: The Winchesters' dying thoughts on shaping your own destiny and making deals; in which Mary is a hunter, John is a father, Dean is a transsexual man, and Sam is pretty happy being Dean's B-side. Featuring 4 hunters, 3 deals with the devil, 2 brothers, 1 blessing, and 1 curse.

Review: I love busaikko's stories; they often shine in terms of characterization. In this one -- which goes AU partway through S4 -- Sam and Dean are so very Sam and Dean, even though Dean wasn't born in the body he always felt he should have. They care about each other, they have a fucked-up family, they fight evil, they fight the apocalypse, they win some, they lose some. The matter-of-factness, the humor, and the happiness even in the ending in which not everyone makes it through are just awesome and make this a keeper.

Due South

Gone to the Dogs (http://crocolanthus.com/dsss/archive/3/goneto.html) by Vienna Waits. Fraser, Ray and Dief go undercover at a dog show to find out why local mobsters are interested. Great casefic, and adorable Dief.

Home Schooling (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_flashfiction/590753.html) by Luzula. Brilliantly characterized moment of wee!Ben studying with his grandmother, when his father arrives.

By Any Other Name (http://community.livejournal.com/ds_flashfiction/449035.html) by Lady Mondegreen. Before Fraser moves south, he and his friend Renfield have dinner and discuss ways to survive the boredom of being posted in Chicago. Wonderful twist on the "oddity" of Fraser and Turnbull.

Chicago, 1968 (http://www.squidge.org/dsa/archive/drama/chicago1968.html) by Melanie Mitchell. How about a gen fic about a rarely ficced character? Harding Welsh was a cop, his brother a cadet and his father a sergeant during the fateful summer of the Democratic Convention.

Merlin

Social Mediæ (http://archiveofourown.org/works/192992) by Hope. With the beginning of Arthur’s reign and the unbanning of sorcery, a new era of communication begins in Albion. Soon even parchment will be obsolete! Or, an excuse for loads of bad puns!

NCIS

Ten Nonlinear Moves (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3175751/1/) / Ten Incomplete Regressions (http://sequitur-fic.livejournal.com/7546.html) by Sequitur. Follows Tony's life, the team's life, when Gibbs retired to Mexico and Tony was leader--and then when Gibbs comes back.

Gah! Coding!

Stargate SG-1

You Can't Always Get What You Want (http://community.livejournal.com/betacandy_sgfic/3866.html) by Betacandy. In the episode Moebius, Daniel got stranded in Egypt in the 3rd century BCE, with a gross approximation of his former team. Betacandy makes it all better, and fixes up a bunch of other things the Stargate PTB had left dangling. (posted in 7 linked parts)

Walked Right Out of the Machinery (http://rydra-wong.livejournal.com/80615.html) Brilliant what-if from The Abyss, exploring Tok'ra society: Jack's blending with Kanan suffered unanticipated side effects. (posted in 9 linked parts)

They Won't Fade Away (http://archiveofourown.org/works/60557) by Danvers. A series ender—when the SGC is going to be shut down, Vala comes up with a plan.

Another adorable series ender: As Planned (http://home.roadrunner.com/~tallulah/Planned.htm) by Tallulah Rasa.

Speaking in Acronyms (http://randomfreshink.livejournal.com/5511.html) by randomfreshink. They all think he's flying a desk, but Jack has managed to wangle a most satisfying undercover assignment in Washington.

The Only Winning Move (http://synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/270248.html) by Synecdochic. The SGC calls them training exercises. They're pretty much become an excuse for LARPing.

Stargate: Atlantis

Old Soldiers Die Hard (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3158126/1/) by Sholio. The old guy in 30B is the most annoying patient on the whole floor. Brilliant unreliable narrator, outsider POV on the after-effects of a Wraith attack.

Even Bonnie and Clyde Had Off Days (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_genficathon/5676.html) by Sholio. Teyla was in jail, but that didn't mean she wanted Ronon to break her out. Hilarious!

Displacement (http://smilebackwards.livejournal.com/20916.html) by smilebackwards. Missing scenes for The Return. John isn't really sure how to feel about the fact that he seems to have been unofficially adopted by SG-1. Adorable and hilarious!

Hero for a New Age (http://smittywing.livejournal.com/423913.html) by smittwing. Ronon asks Rodney about comic book superheroes, and explosives. (in 2 linked parts)

Twenty Four Hours with a Rodneysaur (http://rivatar.com/aa/atlantis/rodneysaur.htm) by maryavatar. Rodney gets turned into a foot-high dinosaur. Crack and sugar all rolled into one!

Trust People and They Will Be True to You (http://kristen999.livejournal.com/365048.html) by kristen999. When the rest of his team is held hostage on an island, Steve goes into Super SEAL mode to rescue them. (in 2 linked parts)

Hot Fuzz

Don't (http://annlarimer.livejournal.com/777204.html) by annlarimer. Every Sandford lad knows not to step in a faerie ring. Nick doesn't believe it.

Jeeves & Wooster

Green Ice (http://www.quillsandink.com/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=1048) by Adina. Crossover with Lord Peter Wimsey. Bertie is caught up in yet another misunderstanding involving a pretty girl and stolen valuables. Woven into the plot is a poignant backstory for his scattered-mindness and persistent good cheer. (in 4 linked parts)

The Losers

Something Worth Dying For (The Grifters, Thieves, and Losers Job) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/99845) by zillah975. Crossover with Leverage. Clay's team is on a job when they run into another team, one with one of his men from a long time ago.

Mirror Mirror (and two times more) (http://01100100.fanfib.org/fanfiction/other/mirror.html) by Danvers. AU. Various alternate lives Shawn and Gus could be leading.
