Title: Her Whole Heart Devoted
Fandom: Sense and Sensibility
Pairing: Colonel Brandon/Marianne Dashwood
Categories: Romance, Angst
Length: Epic
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: n/a

Review:
95% of all Jane Austen based fanfiction is about “Pride and Prejudice”, and while that may be Austen’s most famous novel (and to tell the truth, it’s my favorite one), her other books deserve some attention as well.

This “episodic sequel to Sense and Sensibility” (in the author’s own words) is a series of stories that explore the courtship and early marriage of Marianne Dashwood and Colonel Brandon. It is not an idealized relationship (though they do get a little mushy sometimes): they have their moments of bliss and their hours of despair and while Brandon’s love is unquestionable from the start, Marianne’s blossoms through time – so naturally that it takes a while for her to truly recognize it.

There’s a little bit of everything in this series: romance, humor, history, mystery, angst. The characters may start out as Jane Austen wrote them, but they are allowed to change and grow during the story and the original characters introduced (especially the Colonel’s sister and her family) fit right in.

Her Whole Heart Devoted by Karen Beckwith - rec
Thank you so much for reccing this wonderful story! I've been reading it for hours and am just about a quarter or a fifth through! It is wonderfully written and the sensibility of the author is a miracle to behold!

In addition, for those who are interested in Jane Austen-style-period writing, I'm giving the following links to a large archive with such "fanfic" stories.

http://austen.com/board/index.cgi

http://austen.com/derby/homet.htm

http://austen.com/derby/homct.htm

While not every story I've read in these archives has been of the superior quality of the one recced above, they are all very good, engrossing and well-written and enjoyable.

In addition, for those who aren't aware of it, the University of Adelaide has an ebooks free website with classic literature that can be read on one's computer (without the necessity of any of the various hand-held devices). The links are:

http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/

http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/meta/authors.html

This service is free, and the quality of the page, its clarity and font size, etc., is excellent. Among the authors offered is Jane Austen but there are hundreds of other authors available as well.

Again, thanks for the rec - this story is very fine indeed!
Love, max

I wasn't aware about the University of Adelaide's site: I'll definitely have to check it out. Thanks!

I've been reading this since yesterday and...wow. I would never have considered writing or reading in this pairing and now I'm wishing there were more S&S fics out there. Great rec!

(BTW, if I didn't mention this before, all those recs you did for reader's recs? You can also use them as formal recs for the comm. If you want:)

Thank you soooo much for recc'ing this! *worships*

--I've been dying to read a piece where the transformation of Marianne's feelings for Brandon is fleshed out, and this my dear, is most certainly worthy to be named an 'epic rec'! :o)

Have you found any fics where we get Eleanor's character, her and Edward's storyline given more dimension, 'screen-time'? or even, the main focus? S&S runs a close, parallel second fav to P&P (for myself) because the two pairs of sisters are but slight echoed, variations of each other.... Marianne just more sheltered, perhaps without the influence of Mr Bennet's satiric wit- and Eleanor with all the sense, yet without the limiting 'goodness' of Jane. (lolz-- sorry! *rolls eyes at self sheepishly*)

Anyways, so this was to say thank you for the lovely rec, and if you come across fic with my fav JA character -Eleanor- send it this way please, please pretty please?

Hope the holiday season, and the new year has been treating you well.
Cheers!

I'm very glad you enjoyed the rec!

I'm afraid there are not that many S&S fics out there (the Jane Austen fandom is primarily focused on P&P, thought that has slowly started to change) and very few really good ones. I'm always on the look out for good fics, though, and you may be sure that if I ever do find a goood Elinor-centric fic, it will certainly be recced here.

As tastes do differ, if you are brave enough to try to waddle through the masses of written fic for yourself, you might want to try checking out the Jane Austen Fanfiction Index (more info here (http://slytherin-gypsy.livejournal.com/51202.html)), which is basically a huge database of over 95% of all Austen fic published online. There is no system for rating fics for quality, but you can look for fics from specific novels, for fics involving certain tropes (for instance, Marianne married to Willoughby), separate the fics which take place in the original setting from modern adaptations among many other things.

Thanks for the comment!
