I've been trying to come up with new and unique ways of pimping [profile] fanficfinder (though we're doing pretty good in finding stories, we'd do better if we had more people) and I realized that, aside from mentions on my lj and the DS Newsletter, I really haven't pimped Epic Recs that much.  And yet, the membership lists continue to grow.  (Hi, new readers!)

So, my question: how did ya'll find Epic Recs?  Inquiring minds (e.g., me) want to know.

And while I'm asking questions, which are your top reading fandoms?  Are they the fandoms we rec in regularly (SGA, Sentinel, Harry Potter, Due South), or did you join because we semi-regularly post recs in fandoms that no one else is reccing in large amounts (Jeeves & Wooster, Samurai Champloo)?  Is there any major fandom you'd like to see added to the roster (SPN and/or...uh...House)?

Speaking of adding fandoms to the roster, Mei and I have been talking about making Small Fandom Week a regular feature (i.e., once every month or two).  Are there any tiny fandoms you'd especially like to see recced?  I know that I personally have twenty or so small fandom folders in my 'to read' folder (which is currently at 3,000+ stories and how the heck did that happen?), so suggestions of where ya'll would like me to start (or of fandoms I should add to the list) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I just did a search for fic recs, and this was one of the communities that came up.

I regularly read SGA and The Sentinel. I occasionally read HP. My other largest fandom (not rec'd here) is SPN and SPN-RPS.

Then you'll be happy to know that a certain reccer (who isn't me) is considering reccing SPN *and* SPN-RPS. Hopefully responses to this post will help nudge her along:)

Thanks for responding!

Yes, there will be SPN and SPN-RPS recs. I also read in XF and StarTrek, and those can be recced if there's interest. :)

Here because I followed you from my flist to this, and because I like recs. I've been reading mostly SGA, but I also will read just about any fandom...

(hey, for small fandoms, you could consider Voltron... *clears throat* http://community.livejournal.com/voltron_yaoi/profile )

Hee! You I know:)

Voltron, huh? The profile certainly looks interesting:) Do you have any suggestions for fic to get me started (preferably long, fluffy fic, as that is the best way to get me hooked on a fandom of which I have no canon knowledge)?

Thanks!

I read SGA, Sentinel and H.P. though I will at times try others.
The really long ones I tend to read over a period of time.

Hope this what you are after.

And of course I remember you:) I'm glad to see so many people read HP, as it's a new fandom for me (which means I tend to go overboard with recs for it).

I think I probably heard of the comm first through [livejournal.com profile] recsrainbow, though I've also met you personally in a number of different communities ;)

What are my top reading fandoms? Well, I'm very very multi-fandom - I love diversity. I constantly try out new fandoms. I tend to like "rarer" things the most, whether it's rare fandoms, or rare pairings/characters within a big fandom, but I'll read anything with an interesting plot.

And you're not the only one with a massive "to-read" folder. Mine's huge, and no matter how much I read it only seems to grow ;)

Oh, specific fandoms? Well, if you have any recs for fics from kids/teen movies/books like Meg Cabot novels, Sky High, Spy Kids, etc, I'll love you forever! They're so hard to find :( I think I have a total of two on my recs site.

It's kind of hard to tell you fandoms to rec, though, without knowing what you like! You can see a number of the fandoms I like from visiting my own recs site (http://mayitbe.co.uk/), but there's so many more I'd be happy to try out. Just post whatever you feel like at the time!

Re: how I found [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs - I'm pretty sure I read one of your fics, perused your LJ, found a link to this comm, and let forth a happy squeal. I love long well-written fics, and a place dedicated to rec'ing them rocks my socks. I've found a number of great fics while looking through the comm, and have revisited a couple of past favorites, so all for the better.

The main fandoms I follow at the moment (mainly because of ease of finding fics) are Due South, SGA, and The Sentinel. I do read/hunt for fic in the HP, SV, Sports Night, Entourage, The Wire, SG-1, Good Omens, Full Metal Alchemist, Pirates of the Caribbean, and various Marvel and DC team stories (X-Men, The Authority, Sandman, Justice League Unlimited 'Verse, Batman, Superman, etc). Ideally (read "I'm greedy") I'd like all the fandoms I mentioned added to the roster here. Good long fics are hard to come by in any fandom.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

I totally agree! One of the reasons I started this comm is I found too many rec sites didn't include story lengths (and/or focused on reccing stories of 2,000 words or less). Since I only really get into stories at the 5,000 word or more point (and only really *love* stories if they're full-blown epics), this drove me up a wall. Though now I'm finding how challenging it is to find new epics, as people these days consider 100 KB to be epic length (!!).

Unfortunately it's really hard to find long fic in smaller fandoms and lately I've been reccing shorter stories simply because that's all that is available. I'm justifying it to myself by figuring the more people I get hooked in a fandom, the more likely someone is to sit down and write an epic (Psych epic! Please?)

There are other fandoms I would like to read much more: Blood Ties and Beeing Human.
Both are rare fandoms...

Sadly I know most of the SGA fic you rec. But some of the Highlander fics are new to me and I enjoy them.

SGA is just too huge for me. Though Mei is reccing stories I haven't heard of, which makes me happy (even if I'm not reading as much SGA these days). I'm glad you're finding some new HL fics, however -- I have at least two more to rec (both of which are crossovers, so I'm betting you haven't seen them before). Plus another twenty or thirty to read. *sigh* Nothing makes me happier than a folder full of fic:)

I've never heard of Blood Ties and Being Human. Are they manga/anime? Any stories you can suggest that might help me break into the fandoms?

Also, if you don't mind my asking, how did you find the comm?

How I got here: you posted an announcement over at [livejournal.com profile] indeedsir about Jeeves and Wooster week. I loved the way things were set up here so I joined the comm.

My top reading fandoms vary a lot. Currently they are: Due South, Jane Austen novels, Jeeves and Wooster, Ugly Betty, Star Trek (all series), DCU (Teen Titans mostly) and Psych. I've been away from the CSI, Smallville, Harry Potter and House fandoms for a while, so I love to see recs from those.

I'd love to see more literary fandoms and some new anime/manga ones. Making small fandom week a regular feature would be awesome!

Honestly, I don't remember how I found this comm. I may have friended your personal journal first, and found out about the comm. that way.

As for Fandoms, I tend to read in cycles, gorging on one or two fandoms until only the dregs are left, and then moving on to another, eventually starting the cycle all over again. I read all your big ones, but can't stand Samurai Champloo (sorry). But your other recs are always interesting, and I enjoy contributing to the search posts, as well.

At the moment, I'm into Firefly & SGA, and would love to see more recs from them. It's really difficult to find good epic stories in Firefly, especially slash, which is a pity, since it has such potential.

I found this--I actually don't know how I found this community. I probably found it through your fiction, which I mostly adore. My current fandoms are pretty much SGA and I'm trying to break into SPN, but I don't like incest fic that much, so it's a little tough.

Small fandom's I'd love more recs in? Practically too many to name: Sports Night, Babysitter's Club, Psych, Bones, Numb3rs (non-incest), Veronica Mars, Crossovers, Torchwood, SPN, Popslash, Joan of Arcadia!, Star Trek: Voyager, NCIS.

I don't know much about anime, or this Jeeves and Wooster stuff, so I tend to ignore those recs. If you could post links to informational posts about those series, I'd be much more likely to give them a shot.

But more (or any) Joan of Arcadia would be wonderous!
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 04:55 pm (UTC)
That's exactly how I feel about SPN -- it's frustrating when the new big fandom is almost exclusively incest or RPS, because both are fairly big squicks for me.

It looks like we have some overlap in the small fandoms (yay!). I'm currently focusing on finding good Psych and Bones fic (though Sports Night is always on my list and I have a couple of VM stories in my to read folder that sound interesting). Hopefully I'll have some nifty recs for you soon!

Not sure where I could find information for my anime recs (except SC, for which I wrote an overview at crack_van -- I'll post a link to that today), but I might be able to come up with something for J&W (which is based on a series of books, at least two of which are available online).

Oh, and I have at least one Joan of Arcadia fic in my to read folder:) I'll look for some more (is it wrong of me that I really want to read a Joan/Cute God fic?)

I found you just by doing random searches in my fandom on Google. I forgot to bookmark though and refound you when I opened my LJ account and did a search for people with a similar interest.

My main fandom is Smallville, particularly Clex. I also enjoy Star Trek - TOS with K/S pairing. There are also a couple of yaoi manga series I follow, but this site seems mainly about TV fandoms, so I won't get into those. I even enjoy SV-RPS, although it is a guilty pleasure, since Tom is married (sigh).
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

Ooo, I think Mei is considering ST recs if there's interest. I'll let her know about your comment:)

Hopefully more Smallville recs are coming soon (I have 40 or so SV fics in my to read folder).

Bring on the manga fandoms! Most of the recs here are for TV series, because those are the larger fandoms (and the ones I have the most access to), but I read manga when I can find it (and tend to move titles to the top of my list if I know there is a fandom) and I watch quite a bit of anime. Any suggestions for new fandoms (and/or recs for stories in anime fandoms) are very, very welcome:)

Thanks!

I think I found this back when I friended every rec comm I could find through both google- and interest-searches on lj.

The fandoms I mainly read in right now: Due South (F/K almost exclusively, long post-CotW ones are my happy place), SGA (Ronon paired with anyone, love John with him, love John period (which apparently you don't, so nyanyanyaa or something ;), but I'll read gen and het sometimes, as well), die hard 4 (John/Matt - there aren't any true epics out there yet though, as far as I know), P&P (FD/EB Regency fic only, the modern adaptations tend to not do it for me - they tend to do everything that made me not want to read het anymore in the first place. Not that the regency ones are all perfect, but they have hand-kissing and carriages and saying so much by saying so little in so lovely convoluted ways and empire style dresses and shit).

But I'll click on loads of stuff, if I come across it and it looks shiny. The Sentinel, Harry Potter, PotC, Sports Night, SG-1 (though I'm not feeling the Jack/Daniel love so much; and since season 4 of sga I totally love Sam, which I hadn't expected given the characterizations I had read *eyes fandom*), the Joss-verses (if you had good long Jayne/whoever or omg Book/anyone, I'd squeeee - I only ever found 2 or 3 Jayne ones, that I really loved - I can be picky like that), BSG old and new, most Trek (I'm not so much into Kirk, so sorry), Star Wars old and new (if you could rec me good long Mace/Obi-Wan or Mace/anyone slash, I'd likely squish you to pieces. And is there even Han Solo/someone-not-Luke slash out there? Must ask the ficfinder), on occasion also x-men, House, CSI (Greg/Grissom), NCIS, Starsky and Hutch, Without a Trace, x-files (Skinner/Krycek), Criminal Minds, Oz, *eyes list* ok anything that holds still long enough. Stopping now.

I'd love to see your take on the p&p monsters, too. But since some of it is posted in locked forums, you can't link to them directly - how will you rec them? Not that you'll automatically want to, mind. Or some Star Wars (as I didn't disguise so much up there). But really, rec whatever strikes your fancy. I love myself new shiny fandoms (um, totally unrelated - wanna rec some farscape? Go right ahead ;)! Also oops, this got long *sheepish*.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 05:08 pm (UTC)
Ooo, there's a John/Matt epic (well, as a series, anyway) in my to read folder! I've been saving it for a rainy day (or whenever I run out of shorter DH4 stories, whichever comes first:) It's by an author I like, so the series would really have to suck to not get a rec.

P&P is a new fandom for me (despite the fact that I wrote a P&P fic for 2006 Yuletide) and I'm looking forward to reading the stories, even if the *entire fandom* is AU fic. Don't fear though, I'll never rec a story that's flocked. It may keep me from reccing a few good stories, but I'm not willing to jump through hoops to read fic and I don't expect other people to do it either.

SG-1: I don't like Jack/Daniel either (I find them kind of boring) and I loved Sam on SG-1 (I don't watch SGA due to how much I can't stand John, *pbbbblt*), which means I tend to ship Jack/Sam in my own fic. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much good het SG-1 fic out there. *sigh*

Jossverse: I haven't gotten much into Firefly (namely because I like the canon pairings, which apparently aren't popular in Firefly fic), but I do have a few Buffy/Angel stories to read. Hopefully some recs will be the result.

X-Files: I read M/S, but Mei seems to really like Sk/K, so there might be more XF recs in the future that you like:)

House: I like the show and I like the fic, but I can't seem to decide whether I ship House/Wilson or House/Cuddy or both and I really just need to download a ton of fic and figure it out. Maybe I'll do that today (after the monster Psych download).

I've never read Star Wars (this has a lot to do with the fact that I didn't like Episode 1 and 2 and haven't seen Episode 3), but some original trilogy fic could be interesting. I'll check it out.

And now this response is getting ridiculously long, so I'll stop:) Thanks for commenting!

i joined because i like long, plotty fics. and it's getting harder for *me* to navigate finding things, so....

my main fandoms are Sentinel, Mag7, Highlander. i'll occasionally read House, SG-1, Macguyver, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. i read Pern and Valdemar stuff more and more often, but there's not a whole lot there to begin with.

i will *very rarely* foray into dueSouth. sometimes, i'll go fic-hunting for specific kinks, but not often. if a story has been recommended to me by someone i trust, i'll go outside my usual haunts, but i usually don't stray for long.

i'm neutral on a lot of your questions, because my own to-be-read pile is like the flintstone vitamins commercials (10 million strong... and growing!). but i like crossovers, so that's what i'd like to see rec'd.

And if only I could find more MacGyver fic that was actually, you know, *good*:)

Well, I've been keeping an eye on [livejournal.com profile] sgastoryfinders quite a bit lately. (I like to see how many I recognize, ;), and it's also a good place to find things I might be interested in reading.) Anyway...that led me to [livejournal.com profile] sgagenrefinders where there was a post asking for long (50,000-100,000 word) stories and a couple of replies to the post suggested this comm. (Yes, you were one of them. *g*) So...I just followed the comms to your door.

I read Andromeda, BtVS/AtS, CSI, Criminal Minds, due South, House, NCIS, SGA, The Sentinel, Star Trek Voyager, and X-files. I'm a multi, multi, multi-fandom slash reader. I do read one very small, hard to find fandom - Inspector Morse. I'd really love to find more of that. From time to time I might also read Highlander and Quantum Leap, but I'm not quite as obsessive there.

So...there you go. :)
