The Yankee's Loot by Yahtzee (PG)

It's Small Fandom Week here at Epic Recs, though I should note that by 'small fandom' we really mean 'fandom that doesn't get recced very often at ER, even if it is a honking huge fandom in the world at large'. A lot of my recs for this week are crossovers, as that is often the only chance I'll have to read a very, very small fandom. Case in point, today's rec...

Title: The Yankee's Loot
Fandom: Dr Who/Gone with the Wind
Pairing: gen
Categories: crossover, adventure
Length: medium
Warnings: racism (as expected when one character is from the Cival War era American South, though it is handled very well.)

Review:
Scarlett O'Hara is returning to Tara shortly after the end of Gone with the Wind when she is suddenly accosted and kidnapped by a strange white man and a black woman wearing pants. And they live in a blue shanty that doesn't look big enough to lie down in, much less live in. As you can imagine, Scarlett doesn't take her abduction well.

If someone had told me last week that I would not only read a DW/GwtW crossover, but enjoy it, I would have told her she was nuts. Clearly this is an example of shameful ignorance on my part, because not only did I read and enjoy this fic, but by the end of it I actually liked Scarlett. Scarlett!

Really, though, the characterization of Scarlett O'Hara is what makes this story so brilliant. She's pragmatic and selfish, clever and self-absorbed, charming and ruthless. She is Scarlett O'Hara in all of her survivor glory and by the end you're just going to want to cheer for her. Hell, even the Doctor is impressed, and I don't blame him. Why can't Scarlett be the next companion? *She'd* give the Doctor a run for his money (and there wouldn't be any of that 'fall all over the emotionally distant alien' nonsense). Till that happens, however, you'll just have to be satisfied by this (freaking fantastic!) story.

I clicked the Gone with the Wind tag with Great Expectations. Sadly, I've already read this gem. When I saw this on del.icio.us, I "had" to give it a go. I expected a crack fic, which can be a lot of fun in a crossover. I was delighted however to find this is so much more than that. My "button" is characterization. [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 maintained the personalities of these beloved characters even while taking them on a fresh adventure. I could see Vivian Leigh as Mrs. Katie Scarlett O’Hara Hamilton Kennedy Butler before my eyes as I read!

Now, about "Great Expectations".........

I wouldn't hold my breath for a Great Expectations fic rec -- I had to read it too many times in school for me to want to voluntarily read more fic involving those characters (also, there doesn't seem to be much Dickens fic out there -- except for endless Christmas Carol type stories, of course -- which is a shame.)
