RR -- Sci-Fi Small Fandom

  • Apr. 29th, 2011 at 7:22 AM
So I woke up this morning and realized that because of the long Easter holidays I completely forgot to put up this months RR post (epic!fail). Sorry about that!

This month we recced sci-fi fics from fandoms you don't usually see in ER. Now it's your turn to entice us to your favorite sci-fi storyline. Remember that any fandom qualifies as a small fandom for ER purpouses if it has less than five posted recs, irrespective of its actual size.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.

Today's Topic: Sci-Fi Small Fandom

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Offering a rec for a fic in the Jumper (movieverse) fandom - the teleportation bit makes it Sci-Fi, right?

Six Words, by [livejournal.com profile] graylair (Ennee Gray), found there: http://graylair.livejournal.com/30442.html

It's less than a thousand words long. He’s a little bit desperate, a little bit in love, slightly insane and he’s jumping all over the world asking the wrong question again and again.

Fic rec for the Transformers fandom, super epic at ~124,000 words.

Transformers: Juxtaposition (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3465930/1/Transformers_Juxtaposition) by Vaeru. (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/667308/Vaeru) Sparkbearer Saga: Part I. G1-based AU. A car wreck on a rainy night leads to one of the oddest partnerships imaginable. A disembodied voice, possessed cars, alien robots, kidnapping, rescue, abduction, sparks, keys, and tomato sandwiches... Read if you dare.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meet an alien race? How about traveling in outer space with them? Living with them for a long, long time? And what would giant alien robots do with a tiny organic in their midst anyway?

Vaeru introduces readers to one such person, Evelyn, a human lucky enough, or unlucky depending on how you look at it, to experience all that and live to tell about it. Vaeru imagines realistic details about just how robots and organics have to adjust to each other in ways most readers never think about. Throw in a freak accident that leaves one of the robots as a disembodied voice only Evelyn can hear, a war between giant robot factions, and a race for a Key to their survival, and you have one hair-raising, exciting and hilarious ride on your hands.

Story is complete and the author has begun a sequel, Transformers: Schism (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6421429/1/Transformers_Schism) -- Sparkbearer Saga: Part II. G1-based AU. Alien invasions, possessed vehicles, language barriers, government conspiracies, family drama, supermarket tabloids, and tomato wars... Welcome to Earth.

Fandom: Isaac Asimov's Robot Detective series

Story: C/Fe by Dorinda

http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/18/cfe.html

The relationship between Elijah Baley, the New York detective of the far future, and Robot Daneel Olivaw is canonically one of love. How can this be further developed in the context of the Three Laws of Robotics?

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Dorinda's long story (17.000+ words) resolves the conundrum magnificently, as one would expect of this author. In the intense setting of a starship, crewed by Spacers returning the despised Earthman to his home, she utilises all three laws, and Elijah's culture-induced agoraphobia, in a story which includes a mystery too. Every time I re-read this story, it leaves me wanting more. In fact I think I might go and re-read it now!

Late to the party as usual, but maybe someone's still checking these? I noticed that there are only three Babylon 5 recs in this entire community (which I am, very slowly, getting through!) and since two of them indirectly inspired me to actually WATCH B5 all the way through, then fall in love with the series, then go looking for more fic, then join the Marcus/Neroon yahoo group, then meet a whole bunch of fabulously hilarious people, who promptly challenged me to write what was supposed to be a short story but turned into an epic beast of lengthy proportions... well. I felt that clearly, there must be more B5 in the world of epic recs.

I hesitate to rec this, because I wrote it. I think it's awesome, and it got some good feedback, but... it still feels a little arrogant. So I'm going to be terribly Canadian and apologize for reccing myself, but I thought that whoever recced the previous B5 fics, at least, might enjoy this one. It's the "A Minbari Courtship" series. I don't think it needs any warnings, as there's nothing in it that wouldn't have appeared on an episode of the show.
