What exactly are Epic Recs?

  • Jun. 14th, 2007 at 1:30 PM
Hi everyone,

Welcome to Epic Recs, fanfic recommendations by Jane Elliot.  I just started this community, so I thought I'd give you an idea of what to expect.

Obviously, this is a recs community.  Specifically, it is a multi-fandom recs community with a focus on longer stories with significant plot development and happy endings ('cause I'm a sap like that).  There will be the occasional short story recommendations, but if that's what you're searching for there are other, better places to look.

As the only person currently making recommendations in this community, you'll find that I tend to read and rec within narrow guidelines.  Typically this means one pairing per fandom (usually the most popular one), stories with both plot and character development, and competent writing.

Here are the fandoms I'm currently reading (and possibly reccing) in:
-SGA: McKay/Sheppard
-Due South: Fraser/Kowalski
-The Sentinel: Jim/Blair
-Highlander: Duncan/Methos
-House: House/Wilson
-Smallville: Clark/Lex
-Samurai Champloo: Fuu/Mugen/Jin (or some permutation of same)
-Hikaru No Go: Hikaru/Akira
-Rurouni Kenshin: Kenshin/Kaoru

There's going to be a lot more recs from the first three, primarily because they're huge fandoms that are still producing quality fic (despite the fact that two of the shows aren't even on the air any more), but I should have a significant number of recs from the other fandoms.

I'm not sure how often I'll be posting recs; this will likely depend on what works best for the folks using this community.  Unless I hear otherwise, I'll probably be posting no more than one rec a day and no less than one rec a week.  Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

I'm so very excited about this community (and not just because I now have an excuse to go back and re-read every long fic in every fandom I've ever enjoyed); I hope you enjoy the recs as much as I like writing them.

Welcome!
Jane

I have a feeling I am going to love all your recs. as your very first is one of my favorites.
I have added you to my flist. Thank you.

Thank you! I have to admit, I tend to read exactly what I write, so I figured most of my flist would enjoy these recs. Have to agree on Coming Home -- I just wish I hadn't had to spend so much reviewing space dealing with the controversy, rather than with the story.

I never could get my head 'round the controversy. There were clear warnings and for me the bottom -- lol-- line has always been, it is fiction and therefore the author's choice what to write, either read or don't as is your preference. Anyway looking forward to more recs. and of course, Pull!!

I didn't even know about the controversy until Xanthe told me about it, and then I had to work very hard to control my annoyance. I'd be willing to bet that most of the people complaining about CH are the same folks who thought the FCC's crackdown after the Janet Jackson Super Bowl fiasco was a crock and here they are doing the same thing to fanfic. *Fanfic*. Good lord, people, it's *fiction*.

Ahem. So maybe I wasn't entirely successful in controlling my annoyance.

I'd say the annoyance is justified. Everytime I see someone getting all serious over some work of fiction I want to strap them down and scream "IT'S NOT REAL, THESE PEOPLE DON'T EXIST. GET A REAL LIFE AND LEAVE MY ENTERTAINMENT ALONE!" I swear, these are the people that are still trying to figure out why Scotland Yard didn't ask Sherlock Holmes to solve the Jack the Ripper case.

Sorry, Sunday night I have to go to work in the morning and my job blowes crankiness.

BTW - Do you read Auburn? She has some lovely long stuff in two of your fandoms/pairing.

Is she the one who wrote A Smell (?) of Apples?

I'm afraid I'm not good with remembering author names...

Yes, that's her. She has just the epilogue left to go on The City of the Seven Walls.

Just found this journal and I've been going through it like it's candy. Long ploty fic are my favorites and it's lovely to be pointed to new ones. And I'm all over bouncy joy to see not only my 'new' fandom SGA on your list, but also Highlander, my first true love and the fandom I keep coming back to again and again. (You might like this list btw: http://www.wordsmiths.net/ROG-L/recs.html) Plus House and Smallville are here too, and I've had the occasional fling with both those fandoms. Joy! :) Thank you muchly for these and future recs!

Glad you're enjoying them! I have to admit that I've had a great time rereading (though Smallville is either a lot darker than I remember, or my dark tolerance has gone way down, 'cause *man*) and it's fun writing the recs as well.

Thanks for the feedback!
