RR - Dark Fics

  • Apr. 4th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
This week we explored the darker side of fandom; now it's your turn to rec your favorite dark fics.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.

Today's Topic: Dark Fics

Previous RR topics can be found here.

dark Firefly/SGA crossover with a happy ending
Title: The Monster in the Closet (http://archiveofourown.org/works/30072)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] fourteenlines/Shaye
Fandoms: Firefly, Stargate Atlantis
Characters: Kaylee Frye, Rodney McKay
Pairing: past (offscreen) Kaylee/Simon
Categories: crossover, angst, dark, slave, friendship, hurt/comfort
Length: Medium (~3100 words)
Warnings: Reference to offscreen death of a major SGA character. Possible implication for canon pairing in Stargate Atlantis. Reavers, so gore, violence, mutilation, rape, and cannibalism. Author's note: Spoilers for all of Firefly including Serenity, and Atlantis through the end of season two.

Summary: She doesn't have friends anymore; friends come for you when you need rescuing. She thinks this is how it begins for everyone here.

Review: Oh Kaylee... She's lost hope, captured by Reavers and barely surviving on their ship. Circumstances are extremely grim. Until one day a new, strange prisoner arrives...

What happens to Kaylee and Rodney is horrific, and it's written from the POV of a Kaylee who has been bludgeoned into becoming matter-of-fact and almost affectless about the horror, though bits of her canon personality still peek through. The way she and Rodney end up escaping the Reavers is a nice ironic twist. (Don't feed Wraith to those who know what they are.) A short but haunting story, which, despite the warnings and grimness, ends on a note of real, sweet hope. It has a sequel (http://archiveofourown.org/works/30053) that, although it deals with PTSD, offers a happy ending.

Re: dark Firefly/SGA crossover with a happy ending
I am ashamed to say that I am not very familiar with Firefly, but Rodney's presence and the promise of an eventual happy ending might be enough for me to give this one a try. Thanks for the rec!

Title: Mael-Gûl
Fandom: Lord of The Rings
Pairing: Aragorn/Legolas (mainly), Boromir/Legolas, Gimli/Legolas, Others/Legolas
Categories:
Length: Super-Epic (100,000+ words)
Warnings: High possibility of triggering content. Explicit, very adult only. Slash, m/m, BDSM, torture, toys, d/s, *very* graphic descriptions; abuse both physical and sexual. Non-con and debatable consent. Read at your own discretion, and please heed the warnings. I mean it!

Summary: Very dark A.U. Legolas slave fic. Mirkwood is a subjected realm and must give hostages to the other Elven realms as slaves. Legolas is the slave of Aragorn, who is a sadist. And to keep Legolas loyal to the Ranger, he is bound by a cruel spell: the Mael-Gûl.

Review: This so well-written and plausible that despite the bleakness and dark setting, it is a fascinating read. Everyone and everything is carefully thought out and planned that the whole fic works, and works well. The weaving of canon and fic is of the very highest order. In fact, after reading this, you can easily believe that this truly is the darker side of elven life that was not shown in the movies. But -- if you don't like the idea of an evil Elrond, or a cruel Aragorn, then don't read.

There is also a spin-off: "Murder The Dawn".

Review: I thought this was one of the best Inception stories that came out off the Big Bang this year. The character voices were spot on and it was truly creepy. I could not stop reading once I started.

I have the feeling a lot of people gave it a pass because of the pairing. But it's a solid story. :)

Re: Fandom: Inception
Glad I could help. :) But seriously wasn't that creepy??? I'm just surprised I haven't seen more talk about this story. I hadn't read a story this scary since Dean Koontz's Phantoms.

Re: Fandom: Inception
It was mega creepy. I'm surprised I haven't seen it spoken about before now - especially considering I've read a lot of other stuff by both the authors and heard them recc'd frequently in other fandoms!

I think maybe it was a combination of the pairing being so rare, and the authors own flists following them more for the Supernatural content than the Inception stuff, that meant it wasn't the massive talking point it really deserved to be.

Still, thanks for pointing me to it.As I said to the authors, it really was exceptional. Scary enough to leave me jumping at shadows. But exceptional :)

Re: Fandom: Inception
I think you're probably right about Arthur/Cobb being a semi-rare pairing in Inception fandom (which sort of baffles me to be honest) but it's a rare treat to get a story this long and this well written in any fandom. I hope readers don't let the pairing put them off the story forever.

Re: Fandom: Inception
I can understand your bafflement. When I first saw Inception, Arthur/Cobb was the pairing that leapt out at me... (Despite the epic love of Dom/Mal I couldn't fully lose my slash goggles *grins*) When fandom latched onto Arthur/Eames I actually had to, embarrassingly enough, look up who Eames was.

It's a pity the pairing isn't more widely read/written. Because this fic is amazing. (Also, long. As you said, long and brilliant fics are rare.) I suppose, though, that all we can hope for is that recs like yours get people to try it. Even if the pairing isn't their thing :)
