Title: The Morning After and A Man of Questionable Morals by Katie
Fandom: Holmes/Watson
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes
Categories: angst, drama, hurt/comfort, dark (by my standards, but only for a section of one story), barely-there D/s (in one scene)
Length: Very Long (~34,000 words, combined)
Warnings: off-screen, non-explicit (but violent) rape of an OC
Author on LJ: katieforsythe
Website: http://www.liquidfic.org/katie.html
Review:
During the course of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes and Watson tumble into bed. A lot. Later, this proves to have unexpected and dangerous consequences.
First, a warning: Katie, like most old-school Sherlock Holmes authors, assumes that you know all of Doyle's stories inside and out and thus many references are made to canon cases that you may or may not know anything about. I'm assuming the case with the big dog and the guy named Baskerville has something to do with The Hound of the Baskervilles, but I have no idea which story the second fic is referencing. If you are able to skip over these details (or know Doyle's stories inside and out), however, you'll find yourself greatly rewarded by a couple of phenomenal old-school Sherlock Holmes fics.
As much as I love both the latest Sherlock Holmes movie and BBC's Sherlock, neither of them have quite nailed the co-dependent, at times infuriating, at other times impossibly bromantic relationship between Holmes and Watson. Katie, on the other hand, does a brilliant job of showing just how and why original flavor Holmes and Watson really do work together. Holmes is well drawn, but Watson is a revelation in this fic: at various times confident and uncertain, trusting and wary, sure that he's Holmes's best friend and fearing that he knows nothing of the man at all. Mix in tension from the era, Holmes being Holmes, and a blackmailer, and you have a fascinating, surprisingly authentic sounding (considering the subject matter) pair of fics. A great choice for folks curious about the original Holmes and Watson or for anyone who likes a bit of literary flair in their fanfic.
