RR - Harlequin

  • Feb. 21st, 2011 at 6:42 PM
Our Harlequin week in honor of Valentine's Day is over and now it's your turn to rec your favorite Harlequinesque fics.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
- WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

Today's Topic: Harlequin

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Okay, stupid question. But what exactly means Harlequin in FFs? Are the fics pure fluff or have slightly unrealistic story lines or what?

Sorry. I'm stupid. -//-"

It's not a stupid question at all! Harlequin is a rather broad category that's easy to confuse with Romance/Fluff fics, so it's not always so easy to define. The rec you posted below certainly seems to fit the theme.

So, I hope this is Harlequin...

Title: Cause You've Got An Awfully Long Way To Go
Fandom:  Glee
Pairing:  Kurt Hummel/Noah "Puck" Puckerman (other pairings like Finn/Kurt)
Categories:  Romance, Harlequin, friendship, humor
Rating: PG-13
Length:  long (~34,000 words)
Warnings: slash
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Author Website:  n/a

Summary: Maybe that’s why he’s reached the desperate, rock-bottom point of allowing Noah Puckerman, he of the casual homophobic slurs and the reason why Kurt keeps two changes of outfit and shampoo in his locker, to help him get a boyfriend.

Review:  What shuld I say? I think almost every Puckurt-lover read this fic! It's a classic. The author wrote the characters so that I could really believe that something like that could happen in the series.
Paperclipbitch wrote an beautiful story with Kurt's POV. The voice she gave Kurt is sometimes diva-like, in other parts vulnerable and in others strong personality. It's like the canon-Kurt and so naturally he is a little suspicious because Puck wants to help him to seduce Finn. But he is also so desperate and in love with Finn so that he accepts the offer after some serious contemplation. Naturally he must so often talk with Noah and how could he know that this boy with such a horrible fashion sense is so... funny or romantic?

The fic is a wonderful way to show that you sometimes find love in the most incredible places and in the people who are normally on the bottom of your list. There are funny parts, scenes with so much romantic fluff that I almost envied Kurt and moments where I want to hurt Puck because he is so stupid. So yeah, it's really like an episode of this series.

So if you love glee and/or Kurt take a look on this fic!

Btw, at the moment the author writes also a fic which shows Puck's POV which describes why he makes this offer.

This sounds very interesting; thanks!

This does seem to fit the Harlequin theme perfectly. Harlequin fics can be fluffy, but are not necessarily so. They usually follow some of the classic romance novel clichés: marriage of convenience, pretending to date (also pretending to be gay), enemies falling in love, among many others...

Title: Reason is Treason
Fandom:  The O.C.
Pairing:  Ryan/Seth
Categories:  AU, romance, drama, hurt/comfort
Rating: NC-17
Length:  epic (~80,000 words)
Warnings: slash
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] ms_soma
Author Website:  n/a

Summary: The boys met at a party in part one, where Ryan realized that Seth was a Nichol, and therefore a family enemy. They’ve had to sneak around to see each other, and both boys have to deal with the issues surrounding that, their complicated family lives, and being on the precipice of adulthood.

Review:  Romeo & Julia - the stereotype for the perfect love without the happy end and almost every fandom and every pairing has a fic with this storyline. Two children of warring familys meet and fall in love but a happy end is impossible... or not?

In this fic Ryan isn't adopted by the Cohens (Nichols) and he also hasn't such a horrible family life. It's not perfect but he is happy. But then he meets Seth and everything he had and has isn't enough. He knows he shouldn't meet this boy but Seth is funny and is a good friend. How should he know that they fall in love?

Hate! Drama! Problems and teenager hormone and this one big unbelievable feeling which is call love.
These and lots of more things are in this fic. The author uses a new setting but Ryan is Ryan and Seth is Seth. In one moment they fight and in the next they are the perfect best friends but they are always together. There are like the characters which I love in this tv series only with other problems but with similar reactions.
The reader sees how they become friends, fall in love, fight against each other and fight for their love and in the end ... you almost believe that also Romeo and Julia got a happy end because if Ryan and Seth overcome all these problems they also they should be live happy till the end.

Hello newly discovered comm! Here's a story that hasn't been recced here before (though I did just rec it over at my own LJ):

Title: strive seek find yield (http://archiveofourown.org/works/125770) (a.k.a. Spoctoria)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] waldorph
Rating: Explicit
Fandoms: Star Trek XI (2009), The Young Victoria
Pairing: Kirk/Spock main pairing, additional background pairings.
Genres: AU, crossover, romance, action/adventure, family, dynastic marriage, virgin/rake, and more?
Length: epic (~68,200 words)
Summary: Spock is heir to the Federation throne, Jim is Prince of America because his fucking brother abdicated, and the Klingons are on the verge of blowing shit up -- a love story.

Review: How many Harlequin tropes can you fit into an astonishingly successful fusion between the reboot Star Trek movie and The Young Victoria? (Which if you haven't seen it, is about the early years of Queen Victoria's reign and her marriage to her consort Prince Albert.) A lot. But despite the cracky-sounding premise, it works amazingly well.

So... in a world -- well, Federation -- ruled by an entrenched aristocracy, with varying levels of inbred royals, there's somewhat sheltered, cabin'd, cribb'd, confin'd Spock, the heir to the Federation throne. (Turns out Amanda was sister to the childless King of the Federation.) Once upon a time, young Spock made a state post-disaster visit to the Tarsus IV colony planet, where he briefly met heroic though shell-shocked young survivor James Kirk, and of course never forgot him.

Meanwhile, young Prince James, always a bit of a rebel, a) never knew who Spock was and b) also thought he'd imagined him. Besides, Jim was a mere princeling of the Americas until his older brother decided to abdicate so he wouldn't have to marry someone dreadful.

Some years later, stepping up to his prince-in-chief duties, it's Jim who has to go to the coronation when Spock ascends to the throne. Guess who Spock picks -- over all objections -- to have his first dance with at his Coronation Ball? That's right, pretty pretty princess Jim! (Who decides that giving Spock a quick blowjob would be a great pre-dance icebreaker. Of course he does -- and he's right, it works quite well.)

So Spock's advisors grudgingly allow that a brief affair with Prince James might be okay until Spock buckles back down and gets on with his duties, which include making a dynastic marriage to someone -- anyone -- not-Jim, and Jim gets command of the Enterprise which he'd been working towards for years and instead of promises of fidelity and courtly love tells King Spock he'll kick some Klingon butt for him. But they kind of miss each other, a lot, and Jim is in his own way about as faithful as he can be to Spock... and well, it keeps going from there.

It reads very fast-paced, there are many moments of hilarity, [livejournal.com profile] waldorph's characterizations are deft and entertaining -- the secondary characters are often just awesome (both Reboot and ToS characters show up), there's action -- space battles! -- as well as pining, and [livejournal.com profile] waldorph makes the progression of the relationship between Kirk and Spock -- from brief encounter as children to supposedly short hot fling to very long-distance near-relationship to complicated marriage where duty and desire are often not compatible -- seem both logical and inevitable, and most of all, delightful. Don't miss it.

Title: Student Teacher Relations
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Categories: AU (non-brothers without demons), Romance, Harlequin, friendship, humor
Rating: NC-17
Length: epic (~95,000 words)
Warnings: slash, student-teacher-relationship, slightly underage (Sam is 17 at the beginning)
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: grave-walker (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/976853/grave_walker)

Summary: Sam's an innocent popular high school student and Dean's the sexy new assistant basketball coach, will Sam fall for golden skin, freckles and pouty lips?

Review: Teacher and student? Ewww. If I remember as my teachers looked then yes, this is the right reaction. But now imagine you have someone like Dean Winchester/Jensen Ackles as a teacher! I think I'm not the only one who would be very happy to go to school. Am I right?

But what is if you're the captain of the basketball team, has the head cheerleader as your girlfriend and are sure you're hetero? This is the problem of Sam McQueen. After one of his teammate kills himself they get a new couch who will have with every teammate private meetings to talk about his training and naturally he is also happy to talk about the problems of his pupils. But one meeting between Sam and Dean is enough to know they have a problem. A big Problem with capital.

But then anger transforms in friendship and friendship transforms in love. Sweet, hot but also naturally. That's the love story between Sam und Dean. They fight against their or better they try to fight against their feelings but it's impossible. They (and the reader) hope that they survive the school year without being noticed, but both can't escape the reality with the homophobia and the laws.

Oh how I wish that I had a teacher like Dean. Funny, smart and hot. And how I wish that I will also find such a beautiful and strong love like Dean and Sam have.
Sweet romantic scenes with roses and beer, fights against each other because Dean often wants to protect Sam, hot sex which will melt you and relationships between friends and familys who will be destroy and restore - these are the parts of this amazing tv series and yes, these are also the major elements of this amazing fic. So it's also naturally that a fan of this series should read this fic. ;-)

Take also a look on the sequels! I hope the author will really write more because her Sam and Dean are addictive.

A Priori (http://archiveofourown.org/works/135090) by [livejournal.com profile] rubberbutton (BBC Sherlock, John/Sherlock, NC-17, warning: slave fic)
In which vampires have enslaved humans and control, well, everything. Vampire!Mycroft insists his little brother get a slave -- even though it didn't work out with the dog -- and Sherlock chooses the one guaranteed to irritate his brother the most: an unassuming little doctor with an ugly past and absolutely no style to speak of.
This isn't strictly Harlequin- but I have odd associations and, in my mind, Vampires = Harlequin & Frilly Collars. (I was unfortunately exposed to Anne Rice novels at a young age, and I've been warped ever since.) Still, it is a very Harlequin-ish verse, where Sherlock and John's LOVE CAN NEVER BE, Mycroft is the stuffy/prejudiced relation (I'm not sure I'm happy with his characterization here, he's a lot more of a bastard than in the rest of fanon/canon), and Moriarty is completely evil and manipulative. But it's also a hell of a lot darker, and the world is very dystopic, with a human patrol and an IRA-esque Human Liberation Front.

Revelations and Consequences (http://kate-lear.livejournal.com/806.html) by [livejournal.com profile] kate_lear (Sherlock Holmes book 'verse, NC-17, Holmes/Watson, warning: cavity-inducing fluff)
In which choices of reading material are discussed, a European capital is visited, and sexual relations are engaged in.
Again, I fail at producing harlequin fic, but this story does have Watson reading romance novels, and Sherlock sweeping him off his feet with grand gestures.

Title: Lost at the Edge of the Sun (http://archiveofourown.org/works/161441#comments)
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0
Pairing: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Categories: Romance, Harlequin, First Time, Angst
Rating: NC17
Length: long (~24,000 words)
Warnings: slash
Author on LJ: zortified (http://zortified.livejournal.com/)
Author Website: James@Gila's Cave (http://gila.faking-sanity.net/index.html)

Summary: Living in Hawaii is expensive, especially when you're still paying a mortgage on a house back in Jersey. When things get to be too much, Danny has to make a hard decision. The hardest part is keeping the rest of the team from finding out that he's homeless.

Review: Having worked in many fandoms, I'm so thrilled to see James (http://gila.faking-sanity.net/index.html) discover H50 and write this wonderful, heart wrenching romance that will make you fall in love with Danny 'Danno' Williams. So realistic it hurts, Lost at the Edge of the Sun (http://archiveofourown.org/works/161441#comments) reaches past the action/adventure of just another cop show and exposes life in today's economy where tough decisions are happening. If this sounds dreary, it isn't. Instead James (http://gila.faking-sanity.net/index.html) makes the characters three dimensional and vibrant, living a real life between one emergency and the next. Writing from Danny's POV, she reminds of what its like to be somewhere strange and new while juggling all of life's unexpected curve balls. The personal insights are like reading a story in HD - Sharp & crystal clear, Danny's troubles are almost tangible. Don't worry, though, she hasn't forgotten Kono, Chin, or McGarrent. James (http://gila.faking-sanity.net/index.html) really takes the time to explore and examine the relationships developing at 5-0. By the time McGarrett catches a clue, you may have a lump in your throat but you'll be cheering for more. This isn't your mom's old harlequin. Instead, this is a romance where your lead can stand on his own two feet even in tough times and still find love, happily ever after.

I would like to throw my hat into the Rec ring as well. My fandoms include H5-0, White Collar, Anime (Naruto, Gundam, ToS,etc), DC Universe, Dresden Files, SG1, SGA, Smallville, X-Files, SPN (Ahem, I do wincest and AngelLove), Leverage, StarTrek (all'verses except ST:E), American Idol, SW, Sherlock, DW/Torchwood, NCIS, Merlin, X-Men, Harry Potter, Sentinel, ... annnd, it hits me I read too much. But I would love to share. ;)

Hey!

Thanks for the rec. This is the first and only H50 fanfic that I've read but I think after this, I might go and find some more.

Title: Hidden from Light
Fandom: Card Captor Sakura
Pairing: Sakura/Syaoran
Categories: AU, Romance, Harlequin, hurt/comfort, song-fic
Rating: NC-17
Length: medium (~4,800 words)
Warnings: slash, student-teacher-relationship, slightly underage (Sam is 17 at the beginning)
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: MS (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/228656/MS)

Summary: Sakura is the mistress of the powerful Syaoran Li. Problem is that he's already married... and not just to his job. Things always get worse though...

Review: This fic shows the life of a woman who loves a man but who also knows that she is the 'bad person.' She is the other woman and she hates it. But bigger than her hate is her love and so she knows she will never have her happy end.

One song ("Stolen Car" by Sting) shows her life perfect and follow scenes in her life and in her relationship. The lyric don't interrupt the reading and fit perfect in the fic.

Normally you would hate the other woman or the wife or the husband because you know one of them is the bad guy but the author has a way to show the feelings of these two pairs that you pities everyone of this threesome. Everybody of them has faults and feelings and wishes and reasons why they act like they do it. You wish them all that there happy in the end but you know it's impossible.

The ending is a little bit clichee but it's also realistic. Someone will be hurt. The reader knows this and so is the happy but also slightly unhappy end perfect for this type of fic.

It's a short fic but one of the few CCS-fics which I love. So... check it out. :D
