Delicious

  • Dec. 18th, 2010 at 8:33 AM
As most of you have already heard by now, on Thursday the information that Yahoo was planning to shut down delicious leaked on the internet. Considering the bookmarking site's  role as a way for people to keep track of their favorite fics and of its use by many communities as a sort or archive/way for people to find fics more easily through tag filtration (ER being included in this second case), this piece of news did not go well with fandom.

Yahoo has clarified that they are in fact trying to sell delicious, not shutting it down.
The 24 hour delay in providing answers may mean that this was not their original plan, but it seems they are bowing (at least a little) to the public outrage. We expect more information about the fate of the site in the coming days.

In any case, the mods just wanted to reassure you that we are aware of the situation and are following the news as they unfold. If the worst does happen we have a saved copy of ER's bookmarks and will look for the best possible place to host them. Suggestions for alternatives to delicious are very welcome.

Apparently Yahoo thought that we would just go gently into the night. I think we scared them. :) I'm so glad that ER has saved a copy, I'd hate to lose even a single link. ♥

I think you re right :) [livejournal.com profile] slyprentice has put lot of time and effort in tagging our recs in delicious; the last thing we would want is for any of those recs to be lost.

Diigo seems to be a pretty good alternative, at least the best from the ones I've found. Not ideal, but *something*, at least.

I've been hearing a bit about Diigo and it might be the best alternative. My major nitpick so far is that you can't see who else has saved a particular link - which is how I personally (and I'm sure loads of other people) find fics saved by people with tastes similar to mine.

I hope, they will opt for a freemium model, so that would ensure, that all newsletters, and communities such as ER that rely on them, could still continue.

I hope that is the case as well!

I've been hearing a lot of Diigo and Pinboard.in being recced; Diigo basic is free, Pinboard.in has a buy-in fee. I've set up accounts at both as backups, but I really really really don't want delicious to die!

I think there has been a great migration surge for both Diigo and Pinboard 'just in case' since the news came out - no one wants to lose their bookmarks! Diigo has its drawbacks, but I'm not sure how widely used a paid service without at least a limited free option would be in fandom. Hopefully we shall not have to worry about it and delicious will stay as is.
