RR -- Small Fandom

  • Nov. 29th, 2010 at 7:53 AM
Have a favorite fandom that never or almost never shows up at epic_recs? This is the time to convert people to it! "Small" Fandoms at ER are any fandoms who have 5 recs or less in the comm, irrespective of the size of the actual fandom (you can check if a fandom qualifies through our tag list or delicious account).

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.

Today's Topic: Small Fandom

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Thanks for the rec!

When it comes to Readers' Recs, you can post as many recs as you wish -- the more, the merrier!

In the comm itself they are not, but RR posts have much more lenient rules: you can rec pretty much anything you want (including your own fics). It would be great, however, if you could mention in your comment that the fic is f-locked, so people would know from the outset they won't be able to get to the fic directly.

Thank-you! Here it is:

Title: Not according to the Disciplines
Author: theficklepickle
Fandom: Henry V, 1989 movieverse
Word count: 10,400
http://henry-herald.livejournal.com/1848.html
Summary: Injured and trapped after the collapse of a cave, Henry and Montjoy have only one another to rely on. It's a time for the exchange of truths between them, if ever there was one!
WARNING: Mediaeval bone-setting without anaesthetic; brief mention of past sexual cruelty.

Review: This film of Shakespeare's play has a fandom that is almost the definition of 'small', with maybe twenty stories to its name. Fortunately it has an excellent writer in the shape of theficklepickle, and this fic is one of her best; an intense take on the 'cave-in' trope that we all know so well. Henry, King of England and the French Herald are trapped together below ground, and here at last they have the time and privacy to examine their feelings for each other, and to come to an understanding. The characters are fully and sympathetically drawn, even the minor ones; the fic is worth reading for old Sir Thomas Erpingham's devastating assessment of the four royal brothers alone!

F-locked, but there's no drama about friending the com, and it has several other stories of similar calibre that are available nowhere else.

Re: Inception
The calibre of writers is amazing! I've been fans of works by four of these writers (plus rageprufrock, who's already been recced in the comm) in other fandoms, and following them down the rabbit hole has opened up a bunch more. Many of these writers also have recs in their journals, so it's a treasure trove!

Fandom: Vorkosigan - Petya Vorkosigan AU by Lanna Michaels
I am a bit late, but haven't had a chance to get on-line until today.

The Vorkosigan fandom has been rocketing in size the last few months at AO3 (www.archiveofourown.org) and there have been several excellent long and stories have appeared along with many, many shorter ones. One of my favourites is the Petya Vorkosigan AU. The summary goes "An AU in which Aral and his first wife (named Therese for my purposes) had a son: Piotr Richars Vorkosigan, who is nicknamed Petya." In addition there is "also an AU of that AU, in which Wrong Things Happened at Escobar and Serg didn't die."

Petya is so well well drawn and Lanna Michaels writes him into canon so well, that I have just been completely drawn in. He is a richly complex character and with every story Lanna adds to this series, we learn more about him and his relationships with those we have come to know from the books. Strongly recommended and already nearing 100,000 words.

Thanks for the rec! I'm definitely bookmarking this for later - the Vorkosigan books are next on my 'to read' pile and I'm sure I'll be craving fics in the fandom as soon as I am done with them.

Re: Fandom: Vorkosigan - Petya Vorkosigan AU by Lanna Michaels
Always glad to welcome a new reader to the Vorkosigan universe - my absolute favourite series of books and one that I have re-read many times. The audio books are very good too, read by Grover Gardner.

This, happily, is one of those fandoms that attracts good writers and encourages intelligent and thoughtful stories. A few years ago, the number of stories in the Vorkosigan fandom numbered in the dozens. Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, the number of fics at AO3 alone has sped up, growing to over 300 there now, and shows no sign of slowing down so far. I am in heaven.

Fandom: Vorkosigan - Guerrilla by Glishara
Another very long story in the Vorkosigan fandom, recently completed, is Guerrilla by Glishara. Summary is "When a new Cetagandan invasion strikes at the heart of Barrayar, leaving much of the government dead and Barrayar itself cut off from the greater galactic community, it falls on Ivan Vorpatril and the team he can assemble to keep hope alive and form the new Resistance. AU for Diplomatic Immunity. COMPLETE."
I love Ivan Vorpatril fics and this one is excellent. This is the Ivan he has always had the potential to be, but who held himself back. Warning for major character death and some parts are desperately sad, but this is a story of triumph in adversity.

The 3 part mini series called "Warrior's Apprentice: Scenes From the Other Side" also on AO3 is good adding to the backstory of that initial installment of the Vor saga.

Title: On Some Idle Tuesday
Author: [livejournal.com profile] calleigh_j
Fandom: West Wing/Criminal Minds Crossover
Rating: R
Pairing: Emily Prentiss/Kate Harper
Length: ~20,000 words

Summary: Emily Prentiss and Kate Harper meet in a bar; therein follows the progression of an accidental friendship to something neither of them ever expected to have

It's hard to find good quality femslash that does it *right*. Fic that focuses on female characters in-and-of itself is rare, so fic that focuses on two strong, independent women who also happen to like each other? Practically impossible.

That's why I was so excited when I found On Some Idle Tuesday. It takes two characters that I like (Kate Harper, Emily Prentiss) and asks the question "what if..." and things spin out from there. Kate Harper works for the White House/Department of Defense making sure the world is safe. Emily Prentiss helps catch serial killers with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI. Both are devoted to their work and they don't make excuses about it. They're smart and competent and the fic takes that to a whole 'nother level.

You don't need to be familiar with either fandom to enjoy this story. It's slow paced, a love story, and it guides you through both worlds fairly well. It makes you fall in love with the characters and when it's over you go looking for more quality femslash, because reading about strong women can be pretty addicting.
