Rec to become a Weekly Reccer

  • Feb. 12th, 2015 at 3:00 PM
We're looking to fill a reccer slot. Our reccers rec once a week, stepping down only when they need/want to move on. Add a review of a favorite fanwork here if you're interested in reccing for the comm. Good luck, and thanks!

Things to keep in mind:
- For this post, recced fanworks can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing (or no pairing).
- You can rec fic, podfic, fanart, or a fanvid.
- Add all information that's included in a typical ER post. We've included our template below to make that easy.
- The review section should be 150 words or more and include specific reasons why you're reccing this particular work.

Sorry, I don't really want to become a weekly reccer, but I'd just like to share a few reads if you don't mind.

Title: Smooth as a River Stone
Fandom: Highlander / SG1
Pairing: none
Categories/Genres: science fiction, OC point of view
Length: 7000
Warnings: none

Author/Artist Website: MarbleGlove (http://archiveofourown.org/users/MarbleGlove/pseuds/MarbleGlove)

Summary: Following the events of A Square Peg in a Round HoleReview:
Nothing transcendent, but I still remember this story a few years after reading it, thousand of fanwork reading in between. This brings a closure to the first story of the series and can be read as an epilogue to it. The author keeps Methos's actions very much in character.

Title: The Trouble with Threesomes and Supernatural Soul Mates
Fandom: Teen Wolf
Pairing: Chris Argent/Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Categories/Genres: action
Length: 88000
Warnings: polyamorous slash, canon-typical violence

Author/Artist Website: Akira_of_the_Twilight (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Akira_of_the_Twilight/pseuds/Akira_of_the_Twilight/)

Summary: Peter looked at Stiles from the corner of his blue eyes and smirked. Stiles swore he saw a flash of red Peter’s eyes, but it might of have been his brain’s lack of oxygen making him hallucinate. “I’m looking for my soul mate. Christopher Argent. I believe he volunteered to be taken in for questioning.”

An iron fist clenched Stiles' heart. This man was Argent’s—Christopher’s soul mate?

Stiles stared at the Peter’s wrist, examining every detail of Peter's soul mark. Stiles couldn’t find anything different between his and the blond’s.

Stiles lifted his hand and ghosted his fingers along Peter’s forearm.

It was lightning all over again, and Stiles yanked his hand back, only to have it caught in an unbreakable grip.

Frosty blue eyes burrowed into Stiles', and he couldn’t stop himself from gulping. The smirk on Peter’s lips grew as the corner of his mouth quirked higher, and he drew Stiles’ hand close to his face.

Peter’s nostrils flared slightly as he stared at Stiles’ soul mark. He pulled Stiles forward, pressing soft lips to Stiles wrist.

“Now what would your name be?” Peter purred

Review:
The author manages to insert a polyamorous relationship in the plot without sacrificing the fast-pace action which is canon. Though the idea of finding your soulmate(s) by some sign on your skin is not new, the pairing is original enough to keep things interesting.

Title: A Villain State of Mind
Fandom: Marvel
Pairing: none
Categories/Genres: drama
Length: 55000
Warnings: depiction of past torture, brainwashing

Author/Artist Website: Mikkeneko (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Mikkeneko/pseuds/Mikkeneko)

Summary: SHIELD has Loki in custody, with the gag on to keep him from spellcasting, but they don't really know what to DO with him. They can't give him food or water or attempt to interrogate him with the gag on, and they don't dare take it off. Their solution? Call in a telepath! But Charles Xavier may find more things in Loki's head than SHIELD bargained for...

Review:
I didn't know about Thor nor the Avengers fandoms before reading this fic (and I still don't). One of the best fics centering on Charles Xavier.
The author's writing is very subtle and they take great care to let the characters develop as they would in canon.
Charles Xavier's great compassion doesn't make him lose sight of humanity's failures.
Loki's redemption doesn't change who he fundamentaly is.
The first story in the series is finished, as are 2 sequels. 3rd one is in progress.
First story revolves mostly around Charles Xavier and Loki's mind games. Follow ups have more action.

I'd like to become a weekly reccer
Title: Wee Doctor
Fandom: Sherlock(BBC)
Pairing: Gen
Categories/Genres: De-aged, Time Travel, Homeless
Length: 229,000
Warnings: Major Character Death, Graphic Depictions of Violence

Author/Artist on LJ: AmericanJedi [livejournal.com profile] americanjedi

Summary: Dr. John Watson is turned into an eight year old child, dealing with Sherlock who doesn't know him in a world where he was never born. He's a little stressed out, but he's got his priorities straight.

Review:
This story will forever stick in my heart as my favourite Sherlock fanfic. I rarely read gen but the emotion in this story makes me wish that there was a completely separate label for fics that have the best kinds of family love even when there is no romance.

And John is so uniquely lovable you can't even blame Sherlock for loving the grumpy eight year old wrapped in a woolly jumpers.

I've read a lot of fics where John gets to go back in time and redo all the cases and impress Sherlock with his foresight. But this fic tops them all by making you forget it's copying the episodes.

It is it's own true story with original characters that will become special to you and a storyline that makes you fall for John and Sherlock like you never even knew them. You ache for Sherlock who is presented with a tantalising puzzle in the young John that can never be solved. And John, who keeps major pieces of the puzzle to himself so that he can keep Sherlock as his and keep him safe at the same time.

I thought as I was reading this that it would be one of those fics that would go on forever until the writer lost their way. I thought there could never be an ending that would satisfy the height on which it had been brought to. I was wrong on all accounts. The ending made so much sense and I would never have thought of it in a million years. While with a fic this good I would have wanted it to last forever, no one can deny it made sense to end it where it was.

due South rec

due South:
Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski:
angst/romance/happy ending:
Length: 12228:
Author on Live Journal: http://dsudis.livejournal.com/
Author/Artist Website: http://dira.ficlaundering.com/ (http://www.example.com/)

Author's summary: Fraser hypnotises Ray by accident. The rest he does on purpose.

Review:

This is, like everything Dira Sudis writes, incredibly beautiful. She portrays a horribly conflicted, angst ridden Fraser with a delicate touch. He feels things profoundly, is tongue tied and guilt ridden, and deeply, painfully in love with Ray Kowalski. He does something which he feels is utterly unforgiveable, and the depiction of his journey toward confession is told with a precision I wish I could emulate.

Ray Kowalski in this is seen through the lens of Fraser's infatuation, and again, the description of him (particularly under hypnosis) is poignant and poised, and pretty much perfect. (Sorry for all the 'ps' - this fic makes me feel poetic.)

I don't want to spoiler it by giving away too much of the plot, but I did find it a beautiful read - not just satisfying in terms of plot and resolution, but simply a joy to read every word of it. It is one of the fanfics that lives on my kindle, and to which I return when I want to remember just how good fanfic can be. (Oh. And the sex is good too.)

Author/Artist Website: AO3

Summary: Finn, Puck and Kurt navigate through a relationship based on love, discipline, honesty and open relationships. It’s a verse, that follows closely to season 1 and following, peeking into later seasons and the future. As of right now there are 41 works, plus a second series, Donut Verse 50 Kinky Ways, with more 17 kinky fills.

Review:

This verse is really huge, 1,8m, more or less, if you count both The Donut Verse and 50 Kinky Ways and it’s still not over. When starting to read this verse you have to be open to the idea of Polyamory and the fact all relationships in this verse are deliciously hard and complex, and that some of them may change with time. I got frustrated many times, and I stopped reading it many times, but I always came back, because each story, while amazingly cohesive, also brings many issues to the table.

When you like both plot and smut, it’s quite hard to find good fic, specially when you look for well thought and well written BDSM. This verse inspired me quite a lot and made me think hard about a lot of subjects, not only d/s relationships, but introducing experiences from transgendered characters, characters of color, jews, christians, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, gender-fluid people, people that link sex with discipline and the ones that don’t, heterosexuality in a non traditional way and lot’s of other experiences.

What surprised me the most about this verse is the maturity in which such dedicated matters are dealt and the fact that they all have lot’s of points of views to consider. I also loved that authors introduced many Original Characters, that only served to enrich the plot and that in more than one occasion made me strive for the fic, hooking me up and bringing me back to it, just to see how and what would happen to them. Another things I find it genius is the fact that they use original canonical dialogue from the show and subvert it, making their own (always very well identified) and bringing something new to it.

On the Original Characters, Toby and Timmy are my favorites, they are so unbelievably well written! And they are side characters. I really recommend not skiping and reading one of the side stories, Just that side of True: A Donut Verse Interlude (”http://archiveofourown.org/works/249076”), to see the goodness of Toby/Will, and a marvelous tale of discovery of one’s sexuality, even with internalized homophobia and prejudice. Timmy in this story is Puck’s brother and he is introduced to bdsm relationships having to deal with this own issues with abuse. In this league, don’t forget Sarah Puckerman, if you enjoy gen, and read 1,000 Sarahs.

If you start reading, know that, besides the Orinal Characters, there is also RPF, where Adam Lambert, Pink and Lady Gaga make appearances, thought Adam becomes a huge part of the verse and one of the best, particularly I love the Love is Careless in Its Choosing (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1044278), a fic set on season 5, when luckly Elliot Starchild is introduced to cannon and the authors bring him back to the verse and it’s really good.

The central relationship is Finn/Puck/Kurt, Povs change between the three of them, and on ocasional, Original Characters (side stories and interludes). Another triumph of the verse is to see some scenes from more than one pov, scattered in each story where we can learn a myriad of details from other characters. The only bad side to this is that you will have to be focused, because there is quite a lot to catch upon and if you do read some stories before others, you will get spoiled. So when reading, follow through the order published on AO3.

There a lot of works in this verse, and so many words, but if you stick to it, believe that you will find many beautiful relationships: slash, het and femmeslash. This verse also is full of multimedia, all stories have songs a plenty, playlists for you to accompany and one video.
