Rec to become a Weekly Reccer

  • Oct. 4th, 2014 at 10:07 AM
We're looking to fill a reccer slot. Our reccers rec once a week, stepping down only when they need/want to move on. Add a review of a favorite fanwork here if you're interested in reccing for the comm. Good luck, and thanks!

Things to keep in mind:
- For this post, recced fanworks can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing (or no pairing).
- You can rec fic, podfic, fanart, or a fanvid.
- Add all information that's included in a typical ER post. We've included our template below to make that easy.
- The review section should be 150 words or more and include specific reasons why you're reccing this particular work.

Karma - M rated - Haven fandom gen, Duke Crocker & Nathan Wuornos
Title: Karma
Fandom: Haven
Pairing: none, gen
Categories/Genres: hurt/comfort, case file, friendship
Length: medium, 11,129 words
Warnings: Violence, bullying/revenge fic

Author/Artist on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] miah_arthur
Author/Artist Website: Miah_Arthur on AO3

Summary: It begins with an unusual apology. It expands in a way that only a Trouble can.

Review:
Miah dives into the messy knot of Duke and Nathan's childhood relationship via the influence of a bully vs. victim Trouble at work in Haven, dragging up both their feelings of guilt and revenge related to those past actions, exploding them into violence in the present.

Haven fandom doesn't see too many gen casefiles, and this isn't an area of Duke and Nathan's relationship that's often addressed. Miah's fic doesn't pull any punches -- these are two men with a lot of violence and ill feeling buried in their interactions, despite the deep love for one another which is always so present on the screen -- and dark places are explored.

It's told in Nathan's first person perspective of events, which is particularly interesting as he falls unbeknowing under the influence of the Trouble and also because it necessarily builds into the viewpoint all the tricky aspects of a world without the ability to feel sensation. Nathan's perspective on Audrey's touches and her ability to influence him through the effects of the Trouble (case Trouble and his own) are a particular delight.

Title: Crossroads
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Shepard/Rodney McKay
Categories/Genres: AU, First Time Romance
Length: Long (~36,000)
Warnings: None

Author/Artist on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brumeier (if applicable)
Author/Artist Website: N/A

Summary: ife in the Pleasure Dome had been filled with very little actual pleasure for Rodney McKay, one of the city drones. Until John Sheppard arrived and turned his whole world upside down.

Review:
This series is actually an AU in which the wraith have been defeated, for the most part, and Pegasus is in recovery. Rodney left the SGC (having never made it to Atlantis) after the end of the war, after the death of his sister, and got work in the Pleasure Dome: a city beneath a shield where any desire can be catered to...for a price. Rodney works behind the scenes, making sure things run smoothly. His life is pretty boring, at least until John Sheppard walks in. John, whose bug transformation could not be completely reversed, is fascinating to Rodney, and draws him out from his safe place of hiding.

The world building

The world building <lj="brumeier"> does is fantastic. Much of it is subtle, just glimpses of this interesting place Rodney works and the changes the end of the wraith have brought. Though Rodney worked for the SGC, things are just different enough to be fresh. John and Rodney feel like themselves. Though the series is long, it draws you in and goes by so fast!
