Readers' Recs -- Epic Length

  • Aug. 24th, 2014 at 4:52 PM
Our Epic/Super-Epic theme week has come to an end and we would love to hear from you. Do you have any favorite stories that are longer than 40k? We'd love it if you'd share with us!

  • Recced stories can feature any pairing as long as they match the theme. Fan art, podfic, and fan vid recs are also welcome.

  • You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All you need to include are title, author, and a link to the story.

  • Fic or media as a single file are preferred, if available.

  • If you'd like to use our reccing template, you can find it under the cut.

Super Epic Rec: Harry Potter Creature fic

Title: Life Cycle Series (http://archiveofourown.org/series/21657)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Draco (with other pairings through out)
Categories: AU, Creature fic
Length: Super Epic (1,376,466 words for all 3 stories at present)
Warnings: Creature fic, MPreg, some character bashing.
Author on AO3:Windseeker2305 (http://archiveofourown.org/users/windseeker2305/pseuds/windseeker2305)
Summary: Epic story involving creature inheiritance, well developed, three-deminsional OC's, and a new alliance that will shape more than just the wizarding world.

Review: The heart of this series is Harry and Draco, but it's about so much more than that. It's a creature fic with a bit of the dominant/submissive vibe (as in mated pairs are either one or the other). The creature in a kind of dark elf that hasn't been seen in the wizarding would in centuries, and so Harry and Draco have much to learn about who they are becoming.

There is some bashing in the form of Dumbledore and Ron, but in Dumbledore's case he isn't truly evil. He has his reasons and his beliefs and even though you want him to lose you don't really hate him for it.

Voldemort is another interesting twist here. His changed and developed in such a way that you want to know more and read more about him, yet it's done in a way that doesn't water him down or make him a good guy or a *white hat*.

And the final thing a love about this series are the original characters. Normally when I read fanfiction (as opposed to original novels), OC's turn me right off, because for the most part they tend to be one dimensional, and flat, and frequently mary-sue, and the like. Not so here. All of the OC's in this series are well developed, three-dimensional characters. I am just as excited to read about a chapter involving Ozemir and Brumek (two of the OC's) as I am to read about Harry and Draco.

2 - Life Agendas (http://archiveofourown.org/works/540774)
3 - Life Crusades (http://archiveofourown.org/works/959472) (This part is still an WiP)

I'm astounded this one hasn't been rec'd yet.

Title: He Says He Is An Experimental Theologian

Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale / His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman fusion
Pairing: Carlos/Cecil Palmer
Categories: Alternate Universe - Daemons
Length: 181,998 words
Warnings: the usual WtNV warnings ("Canon-Typical Violence"); Re-Education; For Science!; Culture Shock; Post-Traumatic Stress

Author on LJ AO3: SailorPtah
Author Website: see AO3 profile for links

Summary:

Ever since Carlos was little, he and his daemon have been fans of Dr. Lyra Belacqua. Both as the most groundbreaking experimental theologian of the 20th century, and as the heroine of dozens of fantasy-adventure children's stories (based very loosely on her own mysterious childhood).

But Lyra's true legacy is still bigger than Carlos ever imagined...until he took a team of scholars to study Rusakov particles in the most theologically interesting community in Hispania Nova. Now his own day-to-day life is full of things like angels, witches, hooded spectres, portals between worlds, vague yet menacing branches of the Magisterium, and a man who walks around without his daemon and can read an alethiometer as easily as a stop sign.

Made my day!
Thank you for posting this! It's the best thing I've ever read. Well, at least this week. Amazing, and Night Vale is such a great fandom.

The Shadow Series by myselfonly
Title: The Shadow Series

Fandom: LOTR
Pairing: Legolas & Gimli friendship
Categories: Adventure/Horror Hurt/Comfort
Length: Super Epic at Over 300,000
Warnings: Violence, torture, minor character death, possession

Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: myselfonly on FFN (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1399838/myselfonly)

Summary:
1. Child and the Darkness: An ancient Shadow is released from the deep places in the world. Legolas and Gimli are reluctantly drawn into a fight for their lives to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

2. The Path We Walk: Legolas takes Gimli on a long promised hunt in Eryn Lasgalen, but their friendship and their will to survive is put to its greatest test deep in the wildest parts of the Greenwood. The Shadow is very, very angry.

3. The Silence in the Song: Can an elf survive without hearing the Song? Can a dwarf overcome his own darkness? Legolas and Gimli find their way to Minas Tirith in search of peace and healing after the events of the summer. Trouble - as ever - finds them there, but whether their strength and friendship can survive yet another ordeal remains to be seen.(WIP but updated regularly)

Review:
What I absolutly love about this series is the author's ability to capture Legolas and Gimli's companionship so perfectly. It feels like a continuation of the films. The villian she has created in the Shadow feels ominous enough that you do fear for the Legolas and Gimli. The creature is so vile and insidious that you can't relax and take it for granted that the good guys will win. Myselfonly has used the backdrop of LOTR to the fullest and we see many characters from the books as well as interesting oc's that fit in seemlessly. Don't let the WIP scare you the author updates regularly.

The series is gripping, and very well written. The author does a great job of keeping the suspense building but she never forgets the heart of the story which is the friendship of Gimli and Legolas through all trials.
