Review:
After Voldemort's death, everyone wearing a Death Mark lost their magic. Most were sent to Azkaban regardless, but a cleared Severus Snape disappeared. Three years later, Harry finds his own magic has mostly drained away (thanks to The Scar), and in desperation he tracks Snape down. At a diner. In Arizona. Where Snape has posted 'No Talking' and 'No Unruly Children' rules, hired a bunch of ex-cons, banned menus, and otherwise proceeded to be totally and completely awesome. Utterly lost and without any other options, Harry stays and tries to come to terms with the loss of his magic and, just maybe, find a more prosaic, but no less beautiful, magic in the world around him.

It took me a long time to give this fic a chance, despite the fact that it's recced everywhere from here to eternity. For one thing, there's the title (*shudder*). For another, the idea of an HP fic without magic (which, why?). And yet, now that I have read it, I have to say that the title is *perfect*, and the best part of this fic is the lack of magic. Well, that and Snape.

Speaking of Snape: oh my god, this is the best Snape *ever*. Snarky, nasty, utterly without patience, and yet completely wonderful. This is a man who has lost everything and built up a whole new life for himself. A man strong enough to survive the one thing that killed virtually every other Death Eater. The man strong enough to not only support himself, but Harry as well. *Guh*. If only JKR wrote a Snape this multi-faceted and interesting.

Final verdict: a long, bittersweet, brilliant fic for any fan of Harry Potter who has even the remotest interest in Severus Snape.

MEEP! I am so flattered. Thank you, thank you! If you're interested, there is some awesome art associate with this story. [livejournal.com profile] chibitoaster just completed a couple of pictures. The back of Snape's head just floors me with how wonderful it is. Link is HERE (http://pir8fancier.livejournal.com/301392.html). I usually don't whore my own fics (or I try not to), but if you are remotely interested in an in-depth character analysis of Snape, I suggest you read This Boy's Life (also archived on skyehawke). Please don't be put off by the first person POV. It really NEEDS it. I personally think it a better story, perhaps my best to date, and it shocked even me how accurate it was regarding canon considering it was written before the publication of DH.

Thank *you* for writing a fabulous fic:) And hey, I'm all about self-pimping -- I'm terrible at browsing for new fic and if people don't point me in the right direction, I might never read what they've written.

(That said, I'd already saved This Boy's Life in my 'to be read' folder -- I'm a little burned out on HP fic, primarily because I ended up reading an unlabelled death fic, which tends to turn me off of a fandom for a while, but it's high on the list of fics to read once I find my way back:)
