Readers' Recs - Small Fandom

  • Jan. 27th, 2014 at 6:54 AM
We've hit the end of Small Fandom week and would love to hear from you. Do you have favorite fics in fandoms that rarely show up at [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs?

Small Fandoms at ER are any which have 5 or fewer recs in the comm, regardless of actual fandom size. You can see how many recs a fandom has with our TAGS. If you don't see your fandom listed, go ahead and rec it; we haven't had many recs.
  • Recced stories can feature any pairing (or no pairing) as long as they match the theme. Fan art, podfic, and fan vid recs are also welcome.
  • You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All you need to include are title, author, and a link to the story.
  • Fic or media as a single file are preferred, if available.

  • If you'd like to use our reccing template, you can find it under the cut.

I've decided to rec two stories from the Vorgosigan fandom, since I haven't found any previous recs. I love the books very much and there are quite a number of fanfiction works, too.

Title: Everything That You Can Keep
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Pairing: Aral Vorkosigan/Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Jole/Aral Vorkosigan
Categories: culture clash, romance, negotiation, series, science fiction
Length: Long (30 344 words)
Warnings: some homophobia, mentioning of OC character deaths, some violence

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: Words Words Words (http://dira.ficlaundering.com/)

Summary:The impossible takes a little more time, a lot of negotiation.

Review:
This story (the 4th of the series) shows us a bit about Lt. Jole, a minor character in the books. It's about negotiating a change in a relationship. Or: How Aral and Jole fall in love due in large part to Cordelia, Aral's wife, matchmaking. The story showcases very well the cultural differences between Barrayar and Beta Colony.

Title: Aral Vorkosigan's Dog
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Pairing: none, Gen fic
Categories: angst, friendship, science fiction
Length: Epic (76 355 words)
Warnings: Warcrimes, rape, and deaths

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] philomytha

Summary: Illyan is assigned to watch Aral Vorkosigan during the Escobaran war. Soon he has to choose between his duty and his conscience, and the consequences rapidly get beyond him.

Review:
In the books we follow Cordelia's point-of-view for the Escobaran war. Here we see the events happening from Illyan's perspective, so we see a lot of missing scenes and also the beginning and aftermath, which Cordelia wasn't a part of.
Simon Illyan is a fascinating character, and it's great to see the beginning of his and Aral's friendship and trust.

Thanks for these. Vorkosigan recs are much needed here. (I think we just have the one for A Deeper Season http://epic-recs.livejournal.com/654475.html) plus a few readers' recs from years ago.

...and, I do like dsudis's work in other fandoms. :)

*facepalm*
I should have checked the small fandom tag instead of just looking for a Vorkosigan tag. Well no matter, the fandom still qualifies for small fandom?!
I really really like the books and I was so happy to see the fanfiction.

Yes, it qualifies as small fandom. There's only one rec post, so it more than qualifies! (Even if it hadn't, we're pretty laid back about RR posts, and we don't expect people to go through the small fandom tag. :) Thanks!

Thanks for the "Everything That You Can Keep" rec! I love culture clashes, relationship negotiation and polyamoury and it's hard to find more than one in a fic.

The Sugar Series
Titles: Tea Time/With Sugar on Top (Complete)
Cherry Bomb(Complete)
Sugar Rush(Complete)
Double Dipped(Complete)
Spun Sugar (Complete)
Whipped Cream (Complete)
Powdered Sugre (Complete)
Honey Glayzed (WIP)
Fandom: Petshop of Horrors/FAKE (With later additions of Earthian, Rent, Queer as Folk, White Lion, Heaven Help Us, Mythology)
Pairing: Leon/D, Ryo/Dee.
Genres: Romance/Drama(/Fantasy)
Length: Super-Epic - Even accounting for the fact that some of it is Authors Notes, the combined series comes in at 1,285,458 words so far.
Warnings: None that I remember. I haven't reread it in a while though.

Author Website: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1191225/The-French-One

The first few stories were written under the name Iceprincess813, before she separated her slash fiction onto The-French-One's account, later stories were co-authored.

The series starts with the Dee/Ryo canon established relationship, and the Leon/D relationship is in pre-slash mode, shifting to a relationship during Tea Time With Sugar On Top.

Tea Time begins with Leon dropping Chris off at summer camp, where he immediately takes to Bikky, ward of Dee and Ryo, who have transferred to L.A. The three detectives naturally fall into each others company.

The series as a whole takes some unusual twists and turns, but besides the WIP Honey Glayzed, which was started during the time I stopped reading PSOH fic, the series had me captivated.

Warnings: As for movie.
Summary: “Ya see, Sandy?” Bunnymund is saying. “Quit your worrying. The kid says he’s fine.”

Fandom: Rise of the Guardians (2012)
Title: Naughty and Nice
Author: Icka M Chif (mischif)
Pairing: Gen
Warnings: As for movie.
Summary: "The problem with being the Guardian of Wonder was that Wonder was not Awe. That feeling of surprise and admiration was certainly part of Wonder, but so was the unstoppable desire to know things. To learn, to explore, to understand." Supposed to be a cute little bit of fluff, then the questions the fic brought up wouldn't stop eating my brain. Combined with some questions about the Man in the Moon and his actions are in the movie vs how 'kind' he's supposed to be in the books, and how exactly he brought Jack back... and... well... Yeah.

Title: A Lopsided Symmetry of Sin and Virtue
Fandom: Elementry
Pairing: Joan Watson/Sherlock Holmes
Categories: Romance, Case fic, Undercover couple
Length: 25,610 Long
Warnings: Racism, kidnapping of infants

Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: language_escapes (http://archiveofourown.org/users/language_escapes/pseuds/language_escapes)

Summary:"Joan thinks she should be less surprised by his sudden, “Watson, we’re getting married!” and yet, here she is, cooking her egg and trying not to be astonished."

Infants are vanishing, and Sherlock and Joan go undercover as a married couple to find their kidnappers.

Review:
What the author does in this story is just astonishing. Not only is the story well written with an intriguing case for the detectives to work on but language_escapes does the near impossible, she keeps Sherlock and Joan and their growing relationship from friends to more perfectly in character.

The Mighty Ducks rec
Title: Let It Go To Start Again (http://harmonyangel.livejournal.com/313118.html)
Fandom: The Mighty Ducks
Pairing: Charlie Conway/Adam Banks
Categories: Future, Friendship
Length: 2,000
Warnings: None. PG-13.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] harmonyangel

Summary: Futurefic. Six years after they last saw each other, Charlie goes to see Adam play.

Review:
The Mighty Ducks and its sequels were hands down my favorite childhood films. Even decades before I found my slash goggles (and was old enough to don them), films embracing the true companions trope were always my most beloved.

In this fic, we get to see Adam and Charlie all grown up. Charlie of course is a youth hockey coach and PE teacher, while Adam has gone on to the NHL. No surprises there. What is a surprise is that they’ve fallen out of touch. It’s all too easy, in this fandom, to imagine ducks old and new living out of each other’s pockets for all eternity. After all, Ducks Fly Together. I found it refreshing to find a more realistic imagining of what the future holds for our plucky heroes.

This is the story of their reconnection. The mutual coming out scene is handled well and the resultant one night stand is off-screen. A good choice in that it allows for the morning-after conversation to be the star of the show. Adam is a public figure and there are no out male players in any professional American sport. It’s not easy, but not angsty or melodramatic either. There is no fairytale ending here, but it does leave us with a healthy dose of hope for the future. After all, if you’re not living on a wing and a prayer, you’re not really a duck.

This is a quick read, and well worth it.

And if you’re feeling nostalgic this vid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsxU2LGe9ko&feature=related) might just hit the spot.

*I know I'm late, but I really wanted to do this, hope it isn't super horrible*

Title: Satellite (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1184699)
Fandom: One Direction (Band/RPF)
Pairing: Zayn Malik/Liam Payne/Louis Tomlinson
Categories: bdsm , drama, friendship, romance
Length: Long (24161 words)
Warnings: Power Play, Kink Negotiation, Breathplay, Face Slapping, Dom/Sub elements.

Author on AO3: Liralen (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Liralen/pseuds/Liralen/)

Summary: Zayn knows Liam and Louis love each other, knows Louis is as protective of Liam as any of them, so when he sees the bruises for the first time on Liam, he doesn't understand. He demands an explanation, but the answers he gets only leave him more confused, left to figure out things about himself he isn't sure he wants to know.

Review:
It’s really hard to find good One Direction fics that deal well with thresomes and kinky themes in a way that doesn’t feel forced. It was a very nice surprise to see Liam/Louis fic acknowledge how their early relationship was difficult and how with time, even in a subtle manner, they learned to work well together.

The genius element of the fic is that the author manages to construct a dom/sub relationship, in a 3way, where everyone has another person to look after them and give what the other needs, but still showing that mistakes can be made and that it’s not always easy to work with bdsm, specially when, at first, Zayn doesn’t seem to wrap his head around what is happening.

Right? It was strange, I was going to chose a small fandom by yuletide standards, and then I went to re-look the tags and I was surprised that there wasn't any recs and I just read that fic and it was just the perfect timing.

Title: It's Deja Vu all over again
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh
Pairing: Yami x Kaiba (slow building)
Length: 187,470
Warnings: angst

Summary: A 13 year old Seto and an 8 year old Mokuba are sent to present day Domino where they meet, of course, their counterparts. But meeting and understanding are sometimes two different things.

Review:
Story revolving around Seto and Mokuba's brotherhood, how their personalities came to be. You will want to hug and hide them both to keep them from ever being hurt again. Though, of course, the point of this timetravelling fic is that you can't change the past, only understand it to move on. Heartwrenching end, but very beautiful and hopeful too.
