Author's Summary:
Arthur and his friends have been making their money this way for years. It's all they know and they're good enough to get away with it. Merlin grudgingly works in a bank, wishing his days away. Their worlds collide and everything changes.
AKA: Bank robbers of the round table.
Review:
So you know heist movies…the sort where you find yourself rooting for the thieves because they’re rather likable and you want to see them outwit their opponent? (It helps if there’s a bit of a Robin Hood thing going on, I suppose.)
This story has all the best elements of a heist movie (with romance!) in fic form, starring our favorite Merlin characters. Even as a criminal, Arthur has a sort of nobility to him that feels very authentic, and he is so, so smitten with Merlin, which I love. He also has the perfect blend of charisma and wit, making him a sort of lovable rogue with a heart of gold.
Despite being trapped in a soul-killing job he hates, Merlin retains the impish charm that I love about him, and that Arthur loves too. His reaction to Arthur’s line of work is believable and suitably angsty. This leads to some lovely pining on Arthur’s part, and when they finally reunite it is just a beautiful moment.
Although the relationship between Arthur and Merlin (which is hot, sweet, and utterly perfect) and the job itself are the stars here, this story functions really well as an ensemble piece as well, with really entertaining and well-written supporting characters in the form of the other “knights”. I also really loved the caring, supportive dynamic between Will, Freya and Merlin.
The author did a really terrific job with this from start to finish, including the heist itself (which I won’t detail so as not to spoil it). It’s a fun, fast, highly entertaining read that I highly recommend.
