RR -- Long Stories

  • Sep. 23rd, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Readers' Recs!

We've come to the end of our Epic/Super!Epic Theme Week, with 6 recs covering 7 fandoms. Now we'd love to hear from you. Do you have a favorite fic that's 40,000 words or longer?

Things to keep in mind:
  • Recced stories can be any fandom and any pairing (or no pairing), as long as they fit the theme.
  • You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
  • Fic or media as a single file are preferred, if available.

  • WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING A NEW RECCER. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts. If you're interested in reccing once each week, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including everything in our rec template: Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including a paragraph or more about why you liked the story).
  • If you'd like to use our reccing template, you can find it under the cut.

Today's Topic: Long Stories

Very generous with the recs! :D
I enjoyed Off the Record, but must have read it on my kindle, and I just realized I failed to leave kudos. Thanks for the reminder to fix that.

I have so many recs, you have no idea. To start with, 690 long-fics here (http://www.fanfiction.net/community/Pomegranite-Seeds/17432/99/1/1/0/0/0/0/), 437 completed HP longfics here (http://www.fanfiction.net/community/On-Behalf-of-the-Muses/15415/) (though that's more a list than it is a rec-set, really - I haven't read all of those), and 764 fics here (https://delicious.com/macey_muse).

I'm kinda voracious and will read absolutely anything; I've ended up with a laaaarge collection of fic.

Title: Shadowlord and Pirate King
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Categories: AU, Space Opera
Length: Super Epic (Main Story: 169,425, Bonus Material: 44,208)
Warnings: Minor character death, violence, light bondage

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loaded_march
Author Website: Footloose (http://archiveofourown.org/users/Footloose/pseuds/Footloose)

Summary:
A fast ship, a good crew, a treasure, a Clan to lead -- that's all Arthur Pendragon has ever wanted. He sits on the Council, he supports his father's kingship, and he keeps an eye on the Imperial Conglomerate when they come too close to Pirate space.

One day the Conglomerate infiltrates the Clans and poisons the King. Arthur must search for a cure to keep his father alive and the Clans from civil war.

An escape route, a sharp knife, a target, the shadows at his command -- that's all Merlin has ever needed. He fulfills his assignments, he uses the Sterling to sustain his once-royal House in their exile, and wages a private war against the Imperial Conglomerate.

When he learns of an elaborate plot to assassinate him, Merlin does the opposite of what's expected. He flees onto a Pirate ship.

There's a saying among the Pirates: that one's fate is written in the stars. Destiny will always set to rights what has been made wrong.

Arthur and Merlin know that they were meant for the other from the moment they meet. They can feel it from across the galaxies separating them. Nothing can stop them from being together or from fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

Review:
If there is someone I know who can write an epic, Footloose is that person. By far my favorite Merlin author, she's probably best known for her Loaded March series (which I didn't rec, as it's not quite done yet). Her plots are amazing. Everything is so well researched and thought out (no, seriously, check out the bonus material which contains her thought process). Her world building is spotless. She crafts an entire universe filled with all sorts of people, and it's like your there, peeking into their lives.

It's convincing. The relationship build up makes you dance around impatiently, but the pay off is so worth it. It's a space opera. It's bound to be exciting and epic and dramatic and Footloose more than delivers.

And let me just say that the accompanying art by Mushroomtale is flat out amazing as well. It's atmospheric and fits perfectly within the story itself.

(Honestly you should just read everything that Footloose writes. You probably won't surface for a month or so, but it's worth it. So, so worth it)

Re: Shadowlord and Pirate King
I loved Shadowlord and Pirate King. Merlin was particularly fascinating, I thought, with his ninja senses. Fantastic addition to our epic length recs.

And the art... seriously love the art-nouveau-meets-future-space-epic style by Mushroomtale. (The image of Morgana actually reminded me of an illustration in an old copy of Dune Messiah I used to have.)

Anyway, lovely rec. If you'd be interested in reccing weekly for the comm, send me a PM with your email, and I'll send you more information about what's involved so you can decide. No worries if you'd rather not. Thanks.

Re: Shadowlord and Pirate King
I made myself set a block of time to actually read the entire fic because I knew I wouldn't be able to stop reading once I've started. I loved how Merlin's powers translated into shadows and the entire premise was just--ugh, Footloose, write forever please.

Usually art in stories kind of makes me shrug, but, yes, Mushroomtale's art was just spot on.

I wasn't sure what had already been recced in the past. I'm hoping a few of these were newish. I wasn't sure if many Teen Wolf fics had been recced before. I have a lot of recs for the fandom but there aren't many fics that I would consider epic. (though I'm not sure if the epic means epic in scope or length?)

Sorry for the confusion -- it's length. The comm calls anything over 40,000 words 'epic' length. I've changed the subject of the post to make it clearer.

There are 19 TW recs here at the moment. But you don't have to check our recs to see if your favorites have been recced before. It's always fine to re-rec in RR! :)

Oh man, I have way too many recs for fics that are over 40k. It seems easier to just point the way to my pinboard site where I have length of fics posted on each fic rec.

Thanks for clarifying on the "epic" part of my question. :) And for the link to the other TW recs. :)

Title: Prince among Wolves

Length: 101,000

Summary:.Looking for full day/evening sitter. 2 twin boys age 4. Must have exp. w/werewolves. Must be human. No pedophiles. No teenage girls. Pay negotiable

Review:
This Story? Is just awesome! It's not your typical romance Story, but it is about being a parent, and learning that sometimes you have to trust your feelings. And although I am often very sceptical about having original characters playing big roles, the Kids in here are just perfect and Overall it makes for an awesome read.

Review:
Heimat ist kein Ort, Heimat ist ein Gefühl (Home is no place, home is a Feeling) are the opening words to this Story which even after all These years has still a very Special place in my heart. It's all about finding this Special Feeling and generally the author is my favourite one in this fandom. Don't be put off because it is posted on fanfiction.net, the Story is still awesome!

Fandom: Battlestar Galactica 1978
Pairing: Apollo/Starbuck
Categories: Mission, Romance
Length: 42,053

Author Website: Josephine's Place (http://josephinedarcy.tripod.com/index.html/)

Summary:The Fleet's in trouble; Starbuck and Apollo have to save them. This will involve kissing. This is from the Original Series. I'm a fan of the new series but I wrote this long before the other came out.

Review:
I am extremely happy that this Story made it over the 40,000 word mark and I have an opportunity to recc it here, becasue this is probably one of the Storys I re-read the most. Apollo and Starbuck on this Mission are just great: They have their back and make the most of their Situation, although they have to make it all up as they go along. Josephine just brings across so much Feelings in this Story, it's really great. So come on People, give it a go!

Title: As If We Never Said Goodbye
Fandom: Glee
Pairing: Quinn/Santana
Categories: Angst/Romance
Length: Words: 120,374 | Chapters: 20
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: Catty Jay (No LJ)
Author Website: FFN Profile (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2267528/Catty-Jay)

Summary: Three weeks. That's all it took. Santana finds herself four thousand miles away from home with only a backpack and a feisty blonde for company. When you're nineteen, three weeks can change your life.

Review:
I read this fic in the summer of 2012 and fell completely in love with it. Catherine (the author) paints a beautifully alluring picture of various foreign countries while weaving in an endearing angst-filled love story. Watching this AU Santana and Quinn fall for each other is only part of the draw, it’s the settings that set this apart for me. From the duo roaming the streets of Italy, drinking schnapps in Germany, to smoking Mary Jane at a café in Amsterdam; the places they visit are a character themselves. This definitely is the perfect match for Quinntana shippers that want to go on a journey.

Title: All the Other Ghosts
Fandom: Glee
Pairing: Klaine (Kurt/Blaine)
Categories: Romance, action, drama
Rating: NC-17
Length: 306,000 words
Warnings: (As put by the author:) "You remember icy, isolated early-S2 Kurt? He kind of never had the chance to get beyond that, poor bain. Warningswise there is that, and worse than that; we're not fantastically realistic in this verse but there is some bad shit superheroes would have to deal with, if you crack open a newspaper you will see this crap all the time. Burglary, hate crimes, physical assault, sexual assault, the whole shebang. There'll be some violence but nothing excessively gory because *I'm* a wuss, and no explicit sexual assault (I make no promises about explicit *sex*, because this is the internet and that's not even a warning, really ;) ) for the same reason. Mentions of drugs and alcohol etc., look, if you read it in your morning paper once it could easily turn up here. I grew up on Batman comics, bad shit happens."

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rainjoyswriting

Summary: It's a big city for one more lost soul in a mask. Superhero AU.

Review:
This is not a story about superheroes. This is a story about people.

And this is, hands down, my favourite piece of fanfiction in the Glee fandom. In fact, it's my favourite piece of fanfiction, full stop. I would even go so far to say that it's one of my favourite pieces of fiction, and that's saying something, because I read a lot.

Rainjoy's handling of the characters, the plot and the flow of writing is simply stunning. Her use of meaning and metaphor brings a deeper level to the story, so that we're not just reading a romance story with a couple of our favourite characters and some of their quirks thrown in, but a wonderfully constructed tale that draws in romance, angst, drama, action, and even satire. Her turns of phrase and use of punctuation are so well chosen that we're left dangling off the edges of our seats, aggressively clicking the "Next Chapter" button for more. She understands her characters inside out, and her portrayal of internal monologue is so very real - this is an instance when we actually are inside the character's mind.

I don't want to reveal too much, but a couple of my favourite things about this fic just demand to be said. Firstly, the flawless transitions from Kurt and Blaine's personal lives to their superhero alter egos. The way she handles it - the change in name (of course, even inside their own mind, a superhero cannot be called by their real name), the way we can actually notice their thought pattern shifting, the differences in behaviour - is down to a T. Secondly, her depiction of fandom. Fandom actually plays quite a large role in this story, and every "fandom interlude", as I like to think of it, is hilarious and moving so very damn relatable. Not to mention that I am now emotionally attached to online personas in a fandom in an AU in a fanfiction in a fandom. Confusing, but painfully true.

Don't let the whopping total of words in this fic put you off. I stayed up till 5am reading three nights in a row, then spent the fourth crying when it was over. (Which, really, was totally unnecessary, as she is now writing the sequel and posting fairly regularly. I won't deny this is the highlight of my week.)

Read this. Laugh with it, cry with it, gasp with it, feel with it. And when you're finished, don't forget to congratulate it. It's not everyday something as brilliant as this is shared with us mere mortals.
