Review:
Floating out on the internet is a piece of official artwork that illustrates astolat's vision of the Harold Finch/John Reese relationship in a single image. In it, Finch is in profile, looking out of the frame, his body angled toward the object of his focus. He is also slightly angled toward Reese, whose body is turned in the same outward-facing direction, but whose face and eyes are undeniably trained on Finch. In all things, Finch is the center of Reese's world. Finch gave him a purpose, his chance at redemption, saved his life on multiple occasions, buys him lots of nice things, and gives him lots of orders.

Fealty, and the canonical events that lead up to it, are what happens when Reese decides to go against Finch's orders, a divergent ending to a multi-episode story arc. Long story short, Reese disobeys Finch's direct order, gets himself in trouble, is gotten out of trouble by Finch, gets himself back in trouble, then is kidnapped from that trouble by a familiar face from his past. Fealty opens with that very kidnapping and follows Finch and his sidekick Fusco as they work together to, once again, fish Reese out of the trouble he's landed himself in.

But the real magic of this story isn't the action, but the evolving relationship between the two men as Finch eavesdrops on the startlingly perceptive observations of Reese's kidnapper on the subject of Reese's feelings toward Finch. Because though Reese and Finch are both turned toward their shared purpose, Reese's eyes and heart always look toward Finch, who at all times has remained focused on their mission. Fealty is the story of Finch looking back.

I am sorry to come poking in here like a nosy author but (a) how have I not known about this comm! I must follow it and read ALL THE FIC, and (b) I have to wave my arms and flail at you, that picture! which I had seen before but not really looked at, I'd kind of gone by it thinking oh yes, official promo, but you are SO RIGHT, wow -- John gazing at his lord Harold! *hearts in eyes*

Haha, this comm is like that local hole-in-the-wall that nobody knows about but is amazing. Truthfully, I went by it a couple of times until I'd read some of your POI fics, and then I realized that it was basically a perfect visual representation of Finch/Reese everything. Oh, and thanks, by the way, for getting me into POI in the first place with your writing!

Hee, I come in to admit that I was the one who sicced astolat on you but the thing was, we both spent 20 minutes staring at that artwork and going, OMG SHE HAS TOTALLY HIT IT AND THAT PIC IS TOTALLY HOW WE SEE POI. I mean, Harold is right off a Roman coin! There are castles towers in the background! John's devotion is right on his face! etc! So thank you for posting that pic!

Thanks for that. I read the first few words of astolat's comment and immediately thought, "Crap, very first fic rec for the comm and I'm in trouble already!" But then I read the rest and was very pleasantly surprised. But what's also surprising is how little love that image gets, considering how subtly amazing it is. I routinely spend 20 minutes staring at it, it's just that amazing.

No, it really is amazing. Most pro artwork is just sort of dull IMO but that one takes a POV toward the source material that reveals it as really interpretive and interesting! It's really like fan art!

I tend not to look much at official artwork because it's usually designed to sell the show instead of summarize it. Still, the episodes are practically their own fan art. The final scene of 2.03 has always stood out in my mind as particularly slashy, with Harold conquering his trauma, his trained attack dog at one side and Bear at the other. There's so much implied in the scene that it makes my shipper brain explode every time I watch it.

Welcome! What an awesome first rec, I love Astolat's stuff but never got into POI; looks like it may be time to start.

Thank you! And it was actually seeing Astolat write POI fic that got me into the show to begin with.
