RR -- Long stories

  • Nov. 26th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
We've finished out our Long fic theme week!  We were shooting for reccing fics we call super epic--those that are over 100,000 words--but anything that takes hours or days (or more!) to read work great for us.  Do you have some favorite super-long stories?  We'd love for you to tell us about them!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.

Today's Topic: LONG FICS

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Lastly, apologies to all our anon commenters; due to a flood of spam we've temporarily disabled anonymous comments.  Hopefully things will calm down and we can turn the setting off soon.

Title: Living with Danger
Author: whydoyouneedtoknow
Fandom: Harry Potter
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2109424/1/
Summary (from the author herself on ff.net): Lone wolf. Dream-seer. Bright child. Scarred child. Singer. Prisoner. Dancer child. Dragon child. Eight semi-ordinary people. One extraordinary family, and how they became one. Pre-Hogwarts story.

Basically it's an AU fic that takes the idea of Harry living with Remus instead of the Dursleys and breathes a unique life to it. There are OCs that play prominent roles into the story, and are actually well developed, interesting & worth reading. It's the first fic in a series with four other fics (three are complete, one in progress). It's a fun series that deviates away from canon in a creative way. I highly recommend all of her writing.

(I hope I did this right, haha)

For word count, I multiplied the size of the file in KB times 200, as per http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_words_in_one_KB.

Title: Oklahoma
982 KB * 200 words/KB = 196,400 words
Author: Amperage and Livengoo
Fandom: X-Files, gen, pre-canon (ie, no Scully, Skinner, etc)

http://mtaratings10.tripod.com/oklahoma7.html
http://mtaratings10.tripod.com/oklahoma8.html

Summary: "Its 1987 and the Oklahoma cops have an unsolvable case. Fox Mulder, golden boy of the VCU, is called in to stop the murders of children across the state. What he finds takes him to places he never wanted to go and forces him to make the pivotal choice of his life."
Warnings: none of the triggers listed on the user info page, but mental illness, torture, medical trauma...makes Criminal Minds look like the Hallmark Channel.

I started reading this on Thanksgiving Day 1997 in a 24-hour computer lab at school. I read it straight through, finishing around noon the next day. It was one of the reasons I bought a tv after 17 years without, because I'd never seen the X-Files, and after this, I just had to learn more about the fascinating creature, Fox Mulder.

This was originally issued on Usenet in 1995/96 in 41 parts, so when you get to the end of part 1, it says "continue to part 7." Ignore it. It's on several other XF archives in the original ASCII text. I'm linking to the one on Muldertorture Rating 10 (http://mtaratings10.tripod.com/index.html), because theirs is the best-formatted I could find. If you go directly to that site, you'll have to scroll down to the "O's" to find it. From the site:

"First Place 1996 Spooky for Best Action/Adventure, First Place 1996 Spooky for Best Portrayal of MulderAngst, Second Place 1996 Spooky for Best Drama, Third Place 1996 Spooky for Best Mulder Characterization, Winner 1996 EMXC for Best Horror, Best Novel, Best Drama."

Title: Rapture
1050 KB * 200 words/KB = 210,000 words
Author: Wombat
Fandom: X-Files/Highlander crossover, slash (Mulder/Methos)
Link: http://ds.dial.pipex.com/town/drive/xsi35/rapture.html
Summary: "Back in the summer of 1979, a young Fox Mulder meets Adam Pierson at a hippie commune. Twenty years later, Mulder is called to investigate when the people who were at the camp keep turning up murdered. Will Mulder find Adam in time, or is Adam the murderer Mulder is searching for?" (from JR's Recs (http://www.angelfire.com/de/theparlor/rex7.html))

This is much lighter than Oklahoma, with cameos from many other late '90's tv characters. It got me into Highlander fandom for a short while, but the show never quite lived up to this fic. The author creates a coherent history of the Immortal subculture in Western Europe over the last millenium. And Krycek shows up to help them solve the case! On the index page, the author says she's working on a sequel, but that was in 1998.

My pleasure! I'll look around for some more this weekend. I think that well-written shows inspire above-average fic writing.

Still in-progress (as in, author updates every third Friday religiously): Embers (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5398503/1/Embers) by Vathara, currently at 655k and climbing.

Have you recced the Sacrifices arc by Lightning on the Wave (http://www.fanfiction.net/~lightningonthewave)? Everything on that account is part of the arc. I believe the total is around 3.5 million words.

Maldoror's Freeport (http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/79865) is awesome, 350k or so - I link mediaminer, but the story is also hosted on Raygunworks.

Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4315906/1/Dumbledore-s-Army-and-the-Year-of-Darkness) is A+ HP fic, by Thanfiction.

Astolat's D&D series, Trial by existence
http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/dungeons/TrialByExistence.html

It also has a sequel.

I don't think this has been recked here before. It's the Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon universe, a kid's show from the 80s, but it's very well written.

If one ever played the table top, then a character class change makes very much sense.

Warnings: the Design of Darkness chapter, R version, IS AT LEAST DUB-CON if not outright non-con. I believe non-con. (I only read the non-R version now.)

I've re-read the series many times, I love it very much.

Title: Let's Try That Again, Shall We?
Author: Circaea
Fandom: Harry Potter
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/168114/chapters/245128
Summary: Incomplete. Sybill Trelawney's prophetic nightmares motivate her friend to try to stop them. Starts in 1989. A complicated, redo-style time-travel story with a lousy summary. Not Harry-centric; often focuses on original and peripheral canon characters.

Title: Damnatio Memoriae
Author: mary_pseud
Fandom: Doctor Who
Link: http://www.whofic.com/series.php?seriesid=98
Summary: The Tenth Doctor, the last Time Lord, made a bargain with the alien Sast. They would send their agents to long-ago Skaro, to help the Fourth Doctor when he tried to blot the Daleks out before they were created. But before that there are Naglons and injustices and backstory on Skaro. Not Doctor-centric.
Comments: An exploration of what makes people monsters and why they might choose to stop. (Character deaths, dub-con, non-con, explicit sex, bdsm, torture, unhealthy relationships, etc.)

Title: Freeport
Author: Maldoror
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Link: http://raygunworks.net/maldoror/freeport/1.html
Summary: Freeport colony: a notorious den of pirates, smugglers and thieves. Wufei persuades one of its denizens, his one-time ally Duo, to help him catch a killer hiding there. Agent Chang thinks he knows what to expect, from this case, from Freeport and from Duo Maxwell. He couldn't be more wrong. 2x5
Comments: What do you say to someone who you haven't seen since you were both teenage terrorists? Are truth and morality culturally defined? In this story, everyone is exactly what they seem to be, they just might seem different if you look at them from another perspective. The characters and society are engrossing. Also, there's an undercover investigation, fighting and romance.

Titel: Long Denied
Author: Cousin D
Fandom: Fruitsbasket x Pet Shop of Horrors
Link: Long Denied @ ffnet (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1514849/1/Long-Denied)
Word count: > 350k

The crossover works really well. The story spans a long time, lots of background and world building. Cousin D gave quite a lot of attention to minor characters in the mangas/animes. Still the main focus is on well known characters. The story deserves an angst warning for several parts, there is also some violence. Don't worry though, we get a happy ending (not the perfect ending). Het and slash pairings (but no explicit sex that I remember).
There's also a sequel which is finished and has > 160k words. I haven't read it yet so I can't say much. But the author promised more trouble for her prey, i.e. the characters.

Titel: Side Effects - heiwa no jutsu
Author: [livejournal.com profile] messypeaches
Fandom: Naruto
Link: Side Effects @ MediaMiner (http://www.mediaminer.org/fanfic/view_st.php/108845)
Word count: > 150k

Kakashi-Iruka fic with a side of Sasuke-Naruto-Sakura.
As the author said: The results of using Instinct surpression jutsus told in the worlds longest one shot. Now with 50% more cocksucking.

Warnings for pr0n, extreme silliness and scences that induce contact embarrassment apply
(I enjoyed this fic immensely)

Recced this over at het_reccers, but I thought you guys might enjoy it as well.

Fandom Category: Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane Adventures
Pairing: Martha Jones/Master + various canon pairings
Fic Title: Now We Have a Map of the Stars
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zauberer_sirin
Link: http://42number.livejournal.com/tag/nwhamots (scroll to the bottom of the page for Prologue)
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13/Violence,War,Temporary character death
Genre: Romance, Drama, Angst, War, Humor.
WIP?: No

Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: total AU: Martha never left and the Master was never killed. The Doctor keeps his promise of taking care of him. Sort of. Martha helps. Kind of. This story is so well written and the author does such a great job of doing the almost impossible she keeps the Master in character. So don't expect to be overly fond of him for most of the fic, but like Martha you will find yourself sympathizing and understanding him more until he ruins it by being well...the Master. But this story isn't only about Master/Martha's burgeoning relationship, it is about all the relationships in the very dysfunctional Doctor Who family. Both Jack and Sarah Jane and their issues with the Doctor make an appearance. Also there are Martha's host of issues with the Doctor and her very conflicting emotions for and against the Master. Plus the Doctor's issues with companions in general and with the Master specifically, come to play. All of that and they are supposed to be stopping an invasion, that may or may not be happening in their timeline. It is 100,000+ words of delicious drama, adventure, and familial dysfunction.

...so late to this, but.

The Vampire Diaries: Love Takes Hostages (http://scorpiod1.livejournal.com/53349.html) by [livejournal.com profile] scorpiod1
Pairing: Stefan/Damon/Elena in all combinations, past Stefan/Damon/Katherine
Length: 130k
Why read? copy + paste from my rec at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van (here (http://crack-van.livejournal.com/4881015.html))
Simply put, this fic is epic. While the story does go AU after 1X14 (the release of the vampires from the tomb), the author still skillfully weaves canon with her story, giving them added depth or different contexts. All three characters are wonderfully written. Elena's combination of take-charge attitude and empathy. Damon's twisted headspace. Stefan's focus on self-control.

An advantage to the fic's length is that we see many of the series' characters. It really feels like a complete world.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: this fic was largely written prior to season 2.

Title: Moving On by Phoenixdown7
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Length: ~150,000 and counting
Warning: WIP

Summary: An Eighth Year fic in which Draco transforms and Harry finally comes back from the dead. It’s time to move on. EWE.

Review: From the first chapter, this fic made me do a double-take, scroll desperately up again and check the date of posting. It read so much like a H/D classic of the Golden Era that it made me shiver with so much delight. As I read it I kept feeling like I could print it out and bind it and put it on my shelf next to my seven HP books, and it would fit in there like it had been there all along.

Phoenixdown7 builds a believable post-war world, and examines its effects on the Eighth Year cohort. Some Eighth Year H/D fic tends to focus on the interaction between Harry and Draco, but what tips the line and makes this an epic and believable Eighth Year book is that it addresses and fully involves the other cohort mates, and especially takes time to flesh out their relationships with Draco. The Trio is particularly well taken care of, and yet Phoenixdown7 doesn’t rush into anything — the author lets the friendship bloom gradually. Halfway through, it made me itch for a good friendship fic between Draco and the Golden Trio.

When the H/D comes, it’s lovely and the icing on the cake, though honestly I wouldn’t have minded waiting another 20 chapters for that to happen, so enraptured am I in the world the author has built. There’s nothing groundbreaking about studying in Hogwarts again, or the careful repairs of the grounds or the strained and tenuous relationships Draco, the only Eighth Year Slytherin, has with the rest of his cohort. But it’s just the kind of thing that makes it amazing — and the best part is, it’s still in progress.

This sounds lovely! HD is my favorite, and classic HD especially, so I love that it reminds you of older fics. I'll look it up, or do you have a link you can add?

And that's a great review. Would you be interested in becoming a weekly reccer on Epic Recs? If so, please pm me with your email, and I'll send you more information so you can decide.

Thanks.
