RR: Crossovers

  • Aug. 28th, 2010 at 10:56 AM
Crossover week is over! I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we did. Now it's your turn to rec your favorite crossovers.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme.
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
-WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

Today's Topic: Crossovers

Title: Jedi Harris
Fandom: Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Star Wars, Stargate
Categories: Crossover, gen, Halloween, Heroic!Xander, Superpower!Xander
Length: super epic, 200,000+
Warnings: None.
Rating: PG-13
Author: scribbler
Website: Twisting the Hellmouth
http://www.tthfanfic.org/wholestory.php?no=7119#chapter1

Author's summary: Another Halloween Xander fic - but from a galaxy far, far away.

Reviewer summary: We've all read “what if” stories about Xander wearing a different costume than the ordinary soldier on the night that Ethan Raine casts his spell with Chaos magic. This sweeping epic expands on that idea, transforming Xander from the Zeppo, to a key member of the Scoobies. With his own personal destiny changed so drastically, he also changes the destiny of everyone around him.

Review: I am a huge fan of Heroic!Xander fics. This is one for the record books. Not only does Xander go to Halloween night as a Jedi, he goes as a young Obi-Wan. The possession is as complete as it could possibly be, even to the point that his movie prop lightsaber works. As the story is set before Lucas came out with the prequels, Xander's retention of knowledge of the Republic comes as a shock to everyone. The story follows him and his friends as he, first in secret and then with the help of Giles, learns to control this new power.
What I think I like best about this story is that Xander isn't instantly a fully trained Jedi when the spell ends. He remembers, and he can access the Force, but he has little to no control. He has to train and become a Jedi through hard work, making mistakes along the way. Starting in season 2 with the Halloween episode, this story follows 90% of the events of the series all the way to Graduation.

The only things that are not great about this story are some typos and a few dropped words here and there. Its only in a couple spots and very easy to ignore. I think the best part is how the author manages this without Buffy-bashing or seriously diminishing most of the cannon characters. This story is a lot of fun to read.

There is also a sequel, Terran Jedi, that after 5 years, is still being written and though it isn't being posted as quickly as it once was, the author is still going strong.

I love crossovers!!!

Gingertart's The Fourth Deathly Hallow (http://www.thebejeweledgreenbottle.com/2009%20Mixed%20Games/Fic%20Snitch/snitch-gingertart.html), Harry Potter/Sherlock Holmes (bookverse). Snape/Harry. The sudden appearance in the middle of the street of two schoolboys arguing over the nearly dead body of their professor starts Dr. Watson on a most extraordinary adventure. One of my all-time favorite fics, ever.

Littera Abactor and Norah's The Cetacean Situation (http://www.livejournal.com/users/littera_abactor/2701.html) Due South/Spiderman 2. What happens when Doc Ock's tentacles enter the Due South universe? Tentacle!crack with fantastic character "voice" and disturbingly hot smut. The first Due South fic I ever read, and still a favorite.

Zahra's The Kingdom of the Blaggers (http://hackthis.livejournal.com/513871.html) Merlin/Entourage. Merlin/Arthur, Morgana/Gwen. AU. Arthur wants to build an acting career away from his father's fame, so moves to California. Merlin follows. Zahra writes amazing Ari Gold fic, great Merlin fic, and when she smishes the two together it's another of my all-time favorites.

Astolat's Old Country (http://intimations.org/fanfic/supernatural/Old%20Country.html). Supernatural/Harry Potter. Sam/Dean. An insistent owl delivers the news that Dean is the newest Lord Taversham, but the brothers need to go to Hogwarts to get their magical education. Sam sees the perfect opportunity to learn what he needs to save Dean.

Tara Keezer's Soul Surrender (http://www.elementalvision.org/soulsurrender.html). Due South/Battlestar Galactica. Fraser/RayK, Fraser/Leoben. The Cylons take Fraser and force him to make a horrific choice. Ray POV remix in Surrender (the end that crowns the pain Remix) (http://community.livejournal.com/remixredux08/51972.html) by siriusblcksbbth.

Lady Ra's Building the Future (http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/NCIS/BuildingtheFuture.htm). NCIS/Smallville/DC comics. Gibbs/DiNozzo, Clark/Lex, Bruce/Abby. Underage. Tony can't take working for Gibbs anymore, and heads out to visit his cousin Martha. He's just in time to help find Clark, who's been kidnapped.

Xanthe's Hiding in Plain Sight (http://www.xanthe.org/NCIS/hips/hips.htm) Stargate: Atlantis/NCIS. AU. Gibbs/DiNozzo, John/Rodney, Carson/Caldwell, Teyla/Ronon, Ziva/McGee, Lorne/Abby, Ducky/Woolsey. Part of Xanthe's BDSM universe. The NCIS team comes to investigate the murders of three Marines on Atlantis.

Amireal's Where Did All the Physics Go? (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=3803) Stargate: Atlantis/Star Trek:TOS. John and Rodney on the Enterprise. Geek love!

Lucy's The Devil Really Does Wear Prada (http://balefully.livejournal.com/554540.html) Supernatural/The Devil Wears Prada. AU. Dean/Sam. Sam is fabulously gay—even more so since starting work at Runway magazine.

Basingstoke's At the Fifteenth Annual Evil Masterminds Convention (http://smallville.slashdom.net/archive/2/atthe.html) and Shack (http://www.ravenswing.com/~bas/slash/shack1.html) Smallville/Austin Powers. Lex Luthor/Scotty Evil. The rebellious sons of two evil masterminds decide to defy authority together. So funny!

Pennyplainknits' Everybody Loves Ianto (http://pennyplainknits.livejournal.com/22892.html) Stargate: Atlantis/Torchwood. John/Rodney, Jack/Ianto. Woolsey gets an incredible new assistant whom everyone loves, except John, who doesn't like the way he flirts with Rodney.

It's a testament to my sad addiction to crossovers that, of the eleven of these you listed, I've read six. My 'crossovers' tag in Delicious has at least 150 bookmarks under it. Jack of all fandoms and master of none. Looks like a great list, though!

Title: Something of Vengeance (http://archiveofourown.org/works/10812/chapters/13844)
Author: Blackletter
Rating: explicit
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle); Jeeves & Wooster (P.G. Wodehouse)
Pairing: Holmes/Watson, Jeeves/Wooster
Categories: action/adventure, crossover, drama, mystery
Length: 82k
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence
Summary: Sherlock Holmes is retired but not gone. When an old enemy seeks vengeance, Holmes and Watson must travel back to London to stop the villain before their lives are destroyed. Bertie Wooster loves detective stories, but he never imagined that he'd be in one, and if he had, he would not have imagined that he would be the bait in a villainous plot.

After an accidental mix-up, Bertie and Jeeves find themselves in over their heads when they meet Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and are suddenly thrust into a world of scandal, corruption, thievery, kidnapping and more. The duos have to combine forces (leading to an inevitable clash of personalities) to get back to their normal lives.

This fic is amazing. The chapters alternate POV from Bertie to Watson, and Blackletter nails both their voices perfectly. The tension is so deliciously thick throughout the story, and the interactions between the characters are great. The mystery aspect of the fic is balanced well with the romance aspect, as well. Holmes is pretty harsh at points, but not unbelievably so. A definite must-read for fans of Jeeves & Wooster and Sherlock Holmes.

Re: Part 2 (of the Recc'oning)
I AM KIND OF RIDICULOUS, I KNOW. *shaaaame*

I just... really like crossovers? And have a nasty habit of obsessively bookmarking anything I find even passingly interesting? A lot of these aren't quite long enough to be realistically considered 'epic', but, you know. CROSSOVERS. They IMPLY epicness just by existing!

I am not debating making a Round 3 of The Recc'oning, no I am not, I am making my bed and fixing tea and then GOING TO SLEEP, goddammit.

Don't be ashamed! Crossovers are my favorite! I've been waiting all month for this theme week and, unfortunately, didn't get to post half the links I wanted to thanks to a wonky internet connection.

Have you ever looked at [livejournal.com profile] crossover_news? I check it almost daily. They have some real gems over there. :D

Also? Part 3! Part 3! *chants*

BBC!Sherlock/Inception
Title: Nothing We Could Judge
Fandom: BBC!Sherlock/Inception
Categories: crossover, slash, het
Length: 11,600 words
Warnings: Sex, drug use, language.
Rating: NC-17
Author: green_postit
Link: http://green-postit.livejournal.com/108442.html#cutid1

Author's Summary: N/A

Reviewer's Summary: Jonathan Eames and Sherlock Holmes are roommates at Cambridge University.

Review: I am usually wary of crossover fics, but this one was so plausible and so effortless, that it's very nearly my personal canon. Eames is fleshed out marvelously, more so than in Inception itself, and Sherlock is just as dynamic. Their relationship as roommates is brilliant and completely spot-on, both in dialog and in physical action. Even the OCs are brought to life with seemingly no effort. Arthur and John Watson show up near the end of the story, and their parts, though brief, carry fantastic depth.

There is really nothing negative to be said about this fic, aside from the fact that it was too short for me: I wanted it to last forever. I strongly recommend this fic to fans of both Sherlock and Inception, or anyone that enjoys sharp character interactions and visceral believability.

Title: Nerds of the Earth, Take Note! (http://emeraldwoman.livejournal.com/5168.html)
Author: emeraldwoman and brown_betty
Rating: NR
Pairing: None
Genres: Gen, Crossover
Length: 7,891 words
Fandoms: Ironman, Leverage
Summary: None given, "Warning: The Turing test was harmed in the production of this motion picture."
Review: This is a fabulous story that compares/contrasts two nerds (Alec and Tony Stark) and how having team/family at Alec's back is perhaps not the only one but it's the most important. Plus, when is a Nick Fury cameo not necessary? Never, I tell you what.
