Title: Insider Trading
Fandom: Yu-gi-oh
Pairing: Joey/Seto
Categories: Action/Adventure, Drama
Length: Epic (89,500)
Warnings: Prison Fic, Consent Issues, Violence
Author on LJ:
yanagi_wa
Website: Under Willow's Tree
Summary: Seto winds up in prison for insider traiding, in the wrong prison. Joey Wheeler is his cell mate.
Review: This is a relatively standard prison fic, but Yanagi's writing is what puts it over the top. She's a very straight forward writer, with a flair for weaving cultural information into her fics. In this case it's Japanese culture which I have always found fascinating, particularly when it relates to anime fandoms like Yu-gi-oh.
For a fic based on a kids show, this is a very adult read. Sex, violence, and prison politics take center stage and are written about in unfliching detail. While both Seto and Joey are sympathetic characters, its clear that they aren't 'good' in the traditional sense. They are both very straight forward characters who do what needs doing and don't spend a lot of bemoaning the consequences of their actions and the story plays off of that.
This is a good read for anybody who likes a good prison fic, a less than romantic get together fic, or pragmatic characters.
