Summary: What happens when Jack Spicer is forced into another world and reshaped into someone entirely different
Review:Shifting Sands is a crossover between the Aladdin movies and Xiaolin Showdown. It’s dark and bloody and not for the faint at heart, but it’s a wonderful character oriented story for Jack Spicer.
The story twists the idea of ‘the good-guys always win’ that’s common in most kids shows and makes it so that the good-guys just can’t win. And it sticks to that format, without fail. Which makes the story very squicky.
I have a real soft-spot for the misunderstood villain archetype and I love stories that deal with villains as the main character, but I find that ficcers often fall into the convention of turning the villain good in order to make them a sympathetic character. Crystallic Sky manages to not only avoid that convention, but make the main character even darker than in canon, while retaining their sympathetic qualities.
The only problem I really had with the story was that it relies on at least a passing knowledge of either Disney’s Aladdin or Xiaolin showdown.
