RR -- Monster Harry Potter Epics

  • Dec. 31st, 2007 at 10:46 AM
So, after a weekend of reading, I officially have a new fandom.  Even better, it's a *huge* fandom, which means I get to be picky as to what I read first (though, knowing me, I'll be reading pretty much everything within my pairing before long).

Here's what I'm looking for: *really* epic (at least 400 KB or around 100,000 words) Harry Potter fic, either Harry/Snape (which is looking to be my eventual OTP, though that might just be because I adored the stories recced last week) or Harry/Draco (preferably without kids -- seriously, what's with sticking a child in every Draco/Harry story?), and of course, a happy ending.  (If you want to think outside the box, I could possibly be convinced to like Harry/Hermione as well.)  Also, any links to large HP slash archives would be much appreciated.

(And in a shameless attempt to garner more recs, I should note that I'm sick and miserable and will direct puppy dog eyes of joy to anyone who offers fic to brighten my day.)

ETA: I just went through 311(!) HP recs at crack_van and...Snape/Hagrid?  Harry/Tom Riddle's Diary?!  Hermione/*Voldemort*?!  What the hell is up with this fandom?

Urm, still hoping for recs for the new year... *puppy dog eyes*

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

H/S

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3484954/1/

The first is "The Marriage Stone" by Josephine Darcy, is a WIP but incredibly long and detailed, with some excellent points of contact between Harry and Snape.

http://tiranog.southroad.com/Tiranog_Site_Map_Web.htm

Anything by Tiranog for HP (and SGA if you want to check those out as well) I recommend. "A Nick in Time" and "Growing Pains" are wonderful, and Long. My absolute fave of course is "Nocturne" Seriously. Vampires, and a happy ending. It doesn't get any better.

http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewuser.php?uid=21

Again with the overall Pretty much anything fro Aucta Sinistra is a must read if you ship H/S. Almost everything is epic and always wonderfully written. Bar none one of my absolute faves from the fandom.

Off the top of my head those are my staples for re-reading, and as I think of more may send them your way.

H/D ship two of my faves are;

http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/maya/UL.html

"Underwater Light" by Maya. Epic, wonderfully plotted and present. Best of all....complete. Enjoy.

And of Course.

"Tissue of Silver" by fearless Diva. Just...love.

Oh, awesome! Except for Tira Nog, I don't think I've heard of any of these fics (which means I haven't read them yet:) Thanks!

Sam the Storyteller/ Copperbadge has some awesome, super long AUs.

Stealing Harry (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=2288)
If Lucius Malfoy got to Peter Pettigrew before Sirius, Sirius would own a bookshop, Remus would have a job, and one day, when Harry Potter was eight years old, they might steal him from the Dursleys...(slash in later chapters) SB/RL SS/NT and canon established relationships (Weasleys, Tonkses etc)

There are several sequels in progress that correspond to Harry's years at Hogwarts, called Laocoon's Children.
Years One and Two are complete and on Skyehawke as well as LJ, and Year Three is being posted as a WIP on her lj (sam-storyteller.livejournal.com).

Also, she wrote an awesome AU called Cartographer's Craft (http://sam-storyteller.livejournal.com/43528.html#cutid1) in which a 16-yr old Sirius pops out of the Marauder's Map after his canon death in Harry's fifth year. SB/HP, and very interesting.

The last of Sam's I'll rec for you is Three Galleons (http://sam-storyteller.livejournal.com/102700.html#cutid1). It's not nearly as long as her Laocoon stories, but it's very cool. Set postwar, it follows Hermione Granger and Severus Snape's developing relationship, focusing on the addition of Remus Lupin.

Resonant's The Familiar (http://trickster.org/res/familiar.html) is an immensely popular one, and one of my favorites. Harry gets turned into a frog, and Snape has to take care of him.

Oh, just to clarify 3G is HG/SS/RL and The Familiar is SS/HP.

His Draught of Delicate Poison by Subversa (http://ashwinder.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=11664 membership possibly required, not sure) is a Regency/Victorian postwar courtship fic based on the Marriage Law Challenge. It's completely het, very long, and awesome. She brings in some very interesting OFCs as Snape's female relations and focuses a lot on the culture of the Wizarding World as stuck in the Victorian era. SS/Fleur Delacour, SS/HG, DM/LL, various other pairings. Here's her summary: Winner in the categories Endurance and Rapture in Round Six of the Multifaceted Awards. In the wake of the Final Battle, the Order has opened Headquarters to house its youngest members during a summer of Ministry-sponsored social events. With Snape as a chaperone, and engaged to another woman, the advent of a busy Hermione, determined to see her friends in love-matches, can only be a recipe for disaster.

Snape the Home Fries Nazi by Pir8fancier (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=12372&chapter=1) is another of my favorites, though again it's not very long. Postwar, Harry is losing his magic due to Voldemort's death and goes in search of the only other magicless survivor: Severus Snape. He finds him the bald owner/fry cook of a diner in Arizona. SS/HP.

Dumbledore's Folly by DementorDelta (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=8151&chapter=1) is a postwar courtship fic with an interesting twist. Dumbledore leaves his estate to Snape and Harry, and in order for one of them to relinquish ownership they have to go through a courtship ritual with the estate as stakes. SS/HP.

Delta's The Devil Will Drag You Under (http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=1331&chapter=1) is the only chan fic I will ever, ever recommend anyone. It's a forced-marriage fic where Snape goes to pick up Harry when he doesn't get on the train for his first year at Hogwarts, and finds him locked in his cupboard. After rescuing Harry, it is determined that Harry must have legal/magical protection of family/spouse and family is no longer an option. Though at first Harry and Snape's marriage is only a pretext, Harry is determined to take it seriously and Snape is wrapped around his little finger.

Archives, that I can think of right now, are Ink Stained Fingers (http://inkstain.inkquill.net/password/main.htm), which has a million billion gazillion HP slash stories of all types, lengths and pairings , and Walking the Plank (http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/index.php), which is purely Harry/Snape and holds such insanely hot treasures as "The Boy Who Lived A Bit" and sequels by Barbarella (http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewuser.php?uid=266).

A huge HP/SS non/dubious/non-con story is Cambiare Podentes: Invocare (http://www.the-archive.net/viewstory.php?sid=3254) and it's sequel Cambiare Podentes: Madurare (http://www.the-archive.net/viewstory.php?sid=5786) by Jordan Grant (I have only read the first one, though).

The most massive story, I can think of, is Lightning on the Wave (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/895946/Lightning_on_the_Wave)'s AU "Saving Connor" and sequels, also found here (http://archive.skyehawke.com/authors.php?no=1324&PHPSESSID=a8168dcb6695ac76a635c7e39ad9a8a5); HP/DM eventually.

Oh, and The Sensible Garden (http://www.snarryfest.com/The_Sensible_Garden.htm) by RaeWhit is adorable, hot and again HP/SS.

If you are willing to take SS, even if he's paired with someone other than HP, I'd strongly rec Josan (http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/josan/index.html)'s stories, "A Gift Of Light" being a favourite of mine.

Mei recently recced Cambiare Podentes, which is what ended up getting me into the fandom as a whole. Great, great fic (especially since it never tripped my non-con squick, which is amazing considering the terrifying list of warnings on the fic itself).

The rest are all new to me and I'm off to download them now. Thanks for the recs!

Mei has excellent taste :)

Just how OTP-ish do you feel here? For example, there was an excellent (and I still hardly believe it myself) longish Snape/Lockhardt somewhere, that I might be able to dig back up, and some truly epic what-if-Cedric had lived AU's by Minisinoo here (http://www.themedicinewheel.net/HP_novellas/hp_novellas.html) and here (http://www.themedicinewheel.net/HP_novels/hp_novels.html), some het some slash. I'm reading the Harry/Cedric one and really like it thus far (I needed an epic to curl up with - and this one was on my to-read-list). I'm guessing you know her site already, seeing as there's a quite big looking x-files/x-men crossover on there, as well (which I haven't read); but redundancy is something I do well, damnit ;)

I think the site I found it recced on was [livejournal.com profile] painless_j's HP recs (http://painless-j.net/blog/hp-recs/), which is gigantic and also has lots of Harry/Draco, which as a rule doesn't do much for me. But check out her Snape/Luna recs, if you feel so inclined!

Heh. I'm pretty darn OTP-ish. I sometimes read Harry/Draco if I don't see it coming, and I once voluntarily read Snape/Lockhart, which was okay, but not something I'd go out of my way to read again. I have checked out Minisinoo's site and found it very interesting, thanks!

Also? Painless j is awesome beyond words:)

There are tons of great HP/SS out there although I'm going blank on real monsters but the one HP/DM story I've reread again and again is Resonant's Transfirgurations (http://www.trickster.org/res/#hp). It's a giant, 400k, with some nice smaller stories to wrap things up. It takes place 5 years or so after the final battle and Hogwarts is trying to reopen. Since this was written in 2003, it's a definite AU but I like these people. They are 3D, made mistakes, survived a war, & now are just trying to pick up the pieces again. It was one of the first big stories I was recommended when I got into HP and I've always appreciated it.

Oh, and if you get a chance, check some of the sequels/prequels. There is a delightfully, cruel SS/Neville one that always make me think.

Enjoy!!!

OMG, I've created a monster.

Here's one I've just been re-reading:
No Way Back by Meri Oddities HP/SS
http://solo4.abac.com/CircuitArchive/NoWayBack.html

It's not quite 100K, but at 77K+, it's a long enjoyable read with a wonderful adult!Harry characterization.
Author's summary: At the end of fifth year, Harry falls into a mirror and is forever changed by the experience.
Harry falls into a mirror and then comes back as a 35-year-old (in the same 15-year-old body). And there is hot, awkward 1st-time sex.

Happy reading (and remember to get some sleep)

So, a great resource is HPfandom.net

A lot of the fic is kind of mediocre, but they have some wonderful, wonderful gems.

Like my all-time favourite story: Secrets (http://hpfandom.net/eff/viewstory.php?sid=6256) by Vorabiza.

Beginning with Draco's unexpected arrival at the Dursleys, Harry's summer after sixth year becomes filled with activity and many secrets. As his summer progresses, Harry generates several unexpected allies as he finds himself actively becoming the leader of the Light side. H/D post-HBP ~~Complete~~

It's amazing, and long, coming in at slightly over 400,000 words. And, okay, there is a baby involved. But again it is totally worth it.

HPFANDOM has a few other fics:

Gypsy Caravan, which is an AU where Harry runs away at the age of 5 and joins a Gypsy Caravan.

The Apple Tree, which is about how Harry grows up...and it is worth reading.

And much more...

Another site to check out is Fan Fic Authors (http://fanficauthors.net). Some of the author's aren't really that great, but I'm fairly sure everyone list has stories that are beyond EPIC.

Enjoy!

And lastly...Fiction Alley HELP! Forum (http://forums.fictionalley.org/park/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=19) is a wonderful forum that pretty much recs fics all day. So if you ever decide you need some Independent!Harry fics, or Severitus, or anything. Or forgot a story and need to find it again, or want to see if there really are far too many fics featuring Blind!Harry or blind!draco... well, yes. This is the place to ask. You can get your answers super fast, and they always have something good to rec.

I used to be over the moon about crossovers, but have sort of lost interest in crossovers for crossovers sake. However, there is one absolutely kick-ass crossover I've already recommended (which you can find by clicking on the crossover link in the sidebar). It's called Night of 100 Stars and it features Buffy and every other genre show ever aired at the time it was written (which was, unfortunately, before Stargate). Enjoy!

Secrets by Vorabiza
I second that!

"Secrets" is possibly the greates HP story ever!!!
I remember reading it during my last holidays, and I only made breaks to eat and sleep (and how sick is that...).

Seriously - I like this story much better than Rowling's books; the characters just have such a depth you just can't help being totally sucked in. Also, the plot is very well thought-trough and conclusive; and - even with the kid - it leaves out most clichés (and those that are used just work ).
Vorabiza's way of speaking (or rather: writing) is also very palatable - no bumbly endless-sentences our horrendous grammar/spelling errors at all, as far as I can remember.

So go check it out! Read it!!! It's really worth the time!

You can't go wrong with the snarry reader (http://snarry-reader.livejournal.com/). They have an awesome list of recs that continue to be updated, plus there're theme-rec lists, whee!

They have a bunch that I like, anything by Aucta Sinistra, Dementor Delta. I really liked Tara Tory for a nice long story. I think Hall of Mountain Kings by Tara is considered a classic plus it has a sequel, though I personally prefer Loving Potions (Harry as mini-Snape! <3). You can find links at snarry reader.

A Little Late But . . .
I read through these recs, and must of my favorites are here, but there are a couple I have to add . . .

The Medean Curse: A Romantic Comedy (http://inkstain.inkquill.net/isf/archive/4/themedean.html) by Lydia Lovestruck is HP/SS. During the the Final Battle, Harry is cursed. The only cure is a complicated potion.

Lust over Pendle (http://www.lop.shoesforindustry.net/) by AJ Hall is Draco/ Neville, which is not a pairing I've ever read before/since, but is absolutely wonderful.

The Best Defense (http://foreverfandom.net/viewstory.php?sid=44) by Joisbishmyoga is a Harry Potter/ Yu Yu Hakusho crossover. It concentrates more on the YYH characters, but is the best of the so-and-so-from-another-show-goes-undercover-at-hogwarts cliche I've ever read, and I've read a lot. Caution: the sequel is a WIP.
