Review:
A race known as the Argonians has invaded Earth and taken control of many major cities. The scattered superheroes, together with some civilians and law enforcement and military officers, lead a resistance. Yet despite being divided by circumstances, Steve and Tony manage to find strength in each other to do what they must to free their world.
The “aliens invade Earth” plot could have been just a boring cliché, but “When The Lights…” manages to avoid this pitfall brilliantly. First, because the Argonians are wonderful OCs, both as a race and as individuals (Isimund, in particular, is an amazing character); they’re not mere two-dimensional villains to serve as foils for the Avengers. It’s also worth mentioning that as much as the occupation is the main focus of the story, what happens afterwards is not just swept under the rug: there are consequences for everything that has happened and rebuilding is clearly not an easy task – a very refreshing take from your average alien invasion/disaster story.
The plot, however, is not the only good thing about the fic. Above all else, it’s the way that the characters are written that really captures the reader’s heart and mind. Tony and Clint, forced to act as collaborators, Hank, dealing with the fact that he is not allowed on the field, Carol, struggling with the events of her past and Steve, who has to act as the fearless leader and whose longing for Tony becomes so apparent in the letters he manages to smuggle to him.
A wonderfully written fic, highly recommended.
