Review: "Clark loses all his memories of being Superman, and Bruce must re-train him in the use of his powers." Without, of course, letting on that they had been estranged lovers.
A stoic Batman struggling to aid his amnesiac lover without giving away their prior relationship is prime Harlequin-angst material. Clark realizing that he's falling for Bruce, hearing that Bruce is in love with someone, and assuming that it isn't him, is heartbreak of the best kind. (It's a reasonable assumption, though; the League didn't know about the relationship, and Bruce's Cold Shoulder just makes it seem like they hadn't been friends.) If you stick with the sequel, Clark remembers what happened - and he figures out just why Bruce pretended not to reciprocate his love.
Mithen has a deft hand with these characters, and she doesn't sacrifice characterization for "twu wuv". These are two strong, intelligent men who are the best at what they do, and who don't find it easy to admit their deeper feelings to themselves. They have issues that suit the traditional characterizations of Superman and Batman, and Mithen's use of amnesia as an aid to overcoming those issues is terrifically written and very believable.
