RR -- Marriage of Convenience

  • Jul. 6th, 2007 at 7:05 AM
Hey everyone,

I've decided to add a new feature to Epic Recs, called Readers' Recs, which will give ya'll a chance to pimp your favorite stories and give me a chance to discover some new and wonderful fiction.

Here's how it works:

Every Friday, I'll post a theme. It might be as simple as a fandom or a pairing, or it might be a premise or story category. Anyone who's interested can comment to that post, reccing one story that meets that week's theme.

The rules are simple:
-No more than one story recced per person, per theme.
-Include a link to the story (or a link to each part, if the story has more than one)

That's it. Unless specified otherwise in that week's theme, you get to choose the fandom, the pairing, the length, the rating, etc. Feel free to rec your own stories, stories by your friends, or fabulous fic that you've loved for years and that no one has ever recognized before. Heck, if you want you can rec something already I've already recced, though it's extremely unlikely I'll be reviewing fic a second time. I'll read all of your recommendations and they'll get added to my pool of possible stories to review.

(As a side note, while you're welcome to rec stories of any length, pairing, rating, yadda, yadda, if you really want to increase your chances of getting the story reviewed in this community you should probably shoot for longer, completed fics with happy endings. Especially the latter. It's hard to picture me reccing something too sad.)

What do ya'll think? Sound like fun?

This week's theme:

Marriage of Convenience

Have at it, folks! I'm looking forward to some great reading tonight.

ETA: No response on the first theme (which is, admittedly, a tough one), so I'm offering up an alternative.  You may rec one story for each.

Alternate theme:

Long Due South AUs

That sounds great. Thank you. Can't think of anything fitting that description to rec though. But I'm looking forward to epic length recs to come from this effort. :yumyum:

Yeah, I was kind of afraid that this one would be too limiting for our small membership. And yet, I really, really want to see some Marriage of Convenience fic and I know there's more out there (SGA, I'm looking at you). Plus, while I'm sure ya'll could all come up with Fraser/Kowalski fic I haven't read yet, it seemed insulting to start out with something so...obvious:)

There are a few really good marriage of convenience stories in Smallville; one of my favorites is one you've already recced: Omiai. But there's also Red Tape, by [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore. It's much shorter than Omiai (most things are, really! :-) at about 100k, but it's really lovely.

And if we were allowed to rec multiple stories for a single theme, I'd rec [livejournal.com profile] sgatlantislight's Unified Theory, an AU in which Everett was never drained by a Wraith, John was sent back to Earth, and Rodney married him so he could return to Atlantis. It's a WiP, currently at 24 parts, ~300k long, and a lot of fun.

On the Due South side, I think my favorite AU is probably [livejournal.com profile] sihayab's Pas de Deux, in which Ray K. became a dancer (and later, a dance instructor), rather than a cop, and Fraser comes in for dance lessons prior to his marriage to Victoria. 284k, and really well-written.

Ooo, excellent choices! Both Red Tape and Pas de Deux were on my 'track down to rec' list, so I'm really happy to have links to each. I've never heard of Unified Theory -- is it close to being completed?

Also, never fear about only getting one rec. Somehow, I think Marriage of Convenience will pop up as a theme again:)

Thanks for the recs!

Oh, good -- glad to have been helpful!

And I have no idea about the status of Unified Theory, sorry! The author hasn't updated it since March, though she's had other long breaks and come back to it, so I'm not giving up on it yet. And it may turn out to be an open-ended WiP; there really isn't an overarching story arc so much as a series of mostly-stand-alone episodes. (Well... there are occasional cliff-hangers, but the end of the last chapter is not one, thankfully.) Wish I could tell you more!

Marriage of Convenience
Without Love by lamardeuse

This is a McShep fic by lamardeuse loosely based on the 1945 film with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in which Tracy is a scientist working on a secret government project and Hepburn is the widow who enters into an unusual marriage with him. c. 22,000 words.

McKay is the Spencer Tracy character and Sheppard is Katharine Hepburn.

Of course, this isn't a legal marriage because it takes place in the United States where we're mostly too stupid to legalize gay marriage.

Re: Marriage of Convenience
Another marriage of convenience fic! Excellent:)

BTW, do you happen to know if the movie this is based on is any good? Reading all of these movie-to-fanfic adaptations is really making me want to go out and watch some classics.

Thanks!

Re: Marriage of Convenience
Well I love everything Tracy and Hepburn, so I enjoyed it. Just watching their chemistry on the screen gives a little magic to a film.

SGA Marriage of Convenience
The Convenient Husband (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/156116.html) by Brighid Stone

McKay/Sheppard, of course, written for the Harlequin Challenge, and probably my favorite from that challenge. It's funny, and a little angsty, and they both have hilarious families, and the voices are great. It can be found here:

Very belated -
I just came across this fic that would fit - the first theme; hopefully you don't mind the belated rec.

It's also at astolat's webpage at:

Re: Very belated -
I don't mind at all -- heck, I'll probably use this theme again (and again and again -- you can never have too many marriage of convenience fic).

And Master and Commander MoC fic? That's something I've got to see. Thanks for the rec!

Re: Very belated -
Also - duh. There are a ton of Harry Potter/Severus Snape marriage of convience/bonding fic. And sentinel bonding fics and ...

but! I will restrain myself and try not to repeat recs you do (uh, no promises? I have a horrible memory) and keep my self to just that *one* bonding fic as I noted in my first comment.

Because I've read it three times today and look to be reading it even more times later on, so I thought I should share.

... yes. I have had my caffiene today. ^^V

I think [livejournal.com profile] astolat's No Refunds or Exchanges. (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/No%20Refunds%20Or%20Exchanges.html) counts as a marriage of convenience story: (SG:A AU - Sheppard/McKay)

Excellent choice! It's one of my favorite stories ever (in fact, it's probably my most re-read piece of fanfiction:) Thanks for the rec!

That was actually intentional -- I was hoping to stir up more interest with two themes in the same Reader's Rec post. It didn't work:)

BTW, I don't know if I mentioned this earlier, but I recently recced "Like a House on Fire", which is one of my favorite Due South stories. Nice work! (Urm, more detail in the rec itself:)

The Marriage Stone by Josephine Darcy
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3484954/1/
Fandom - Harry Potter. Pairing - Harry/Snape. Rating - Eventual NC17 Status - WIP, regularly updated. Theme - Marriage of Convenience.

I'm not a big Fan of Harry/Snape, but this story is absolutely wonderful. Not only is the Author's view of the Wizarding World completely unique in the fandom, but she is absolutely dedicated to avoiding the Snape and Harry are forced to bond/marry and fall in love and into bed with each other immediately cliche. Her Wizarding World is absolutely wonderful, and the way she spackles many of JKR's plot holes is extremely convincing. It goes AU after book Four.
Frankly, this is the only Harry/Snape arranged marriage fic that I would ever recommend to someone who was not a fan of Harry/Snape. Well worth reading, and regularly updated.

Well I've never read HP fic, but this does sound intriguing (and it never hurts to start with slash). Plus I like Josephine Darcy in general and am *thrilled* by the fact that it goes AU (I'm getting progressively more annoyed with JKR with each book -- I fear for how she might have ended the series, so I've been avoiding DH).

All of which means -- off to bookmark:) Thanks!

Marriage of Convenience
Wesley is given as a spouse to Angel. This isnt finished, and I'm not sure it ever will be, but as it's a universe story more than a 1 plot story - it doesn't seem to matter. I don't think you even need to really know the fandom to enjoy it, its so AU.

This is the descrption the author, The Brat Queen, gives "Extreme AU the likes of which you can't possibly be insane enough to imagine. How insane? It's an apocalyptic world where Wes is a prince trained in the arts of pleasing a husband, and Angel is the king that he ends up being married to. This thing has a kitten, people. How much more do I need to warn you?"

I know this post is well over a year old, but I thought you might appreciate a marriage of convenience rec ;) I just a minute ago finished reading this excellent story.

An Engaging Friendship (http://austen.com/derby/amyj3.htm) by Amy J
Pride and Prejudice. After growing up together as the best of friends, Elizabeth and Darcy are separated by a tragic event. Several years later, after becoming reacquainted with one another, they agree to enter into a marriage of convenience. I'm planning to put this on my own recs site soon, but considering your love for marriage of convience fics I thought you might like to try it, even though it's not your favourite pairing.

It's Tin Man fanfic, it's complete (though apparently a sequel is being written) and it's exactly the kind of fic I was hoping to find when I started searching the fandom. Well written, long (well over a hundred thousand words), good characterisation, kept me gripped for hours.

The Consort (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4495379/1/The_Consort) by MaddyCain
Before she becomes Queen, DG reluctantly asks her most trusted friend, Wyatt Cain, to be her Consort. When Cain must leave on a dangerous mission, DG realizes that she's fallen in love with her husband, and he with her, but is it too late? DG/Cain.

Marriage of Convenience - Highlander
Dear Jane,

I was browsing the web and came across this post, requesting fic recs for the theme "Marriage of Convenience." I know it's been a while, but it did remind me of a Highlander fic, "The Other Reasons," by Black Rook:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4873188/1/The_other_reasons.

I'm not sure this is what you had in mind, but I hope you enjoy.
