Author's Summary: Ianto Jones is a very different sort of boy. (wee!Time Lord!Ianto)
Review:
I have previously ranted about the Torchwood fandom in general and Ianto characterization in specific (see here). Since then I have found many wonderful stories with great Ianto characterization. However, I've also noticed that the more interesting "fanon" Iantos (Um...or is that Iantoes?) are often (a) a Time Lord, (b) some other kind of alien, (c) some sort of non-human quasi-life-form, or (d) all of the above. This story falls under the "type A Ianto" category.
Pocket Watch Boy has one of the most intriguing (or creepy, depending on how you look at it) opening paragraphs I've ever read in fanfiction. I very seldom feel the need to give an excerpt of the story as part the rec, but I believe it is warranted in this case.
When Ianto Jones was very small, he climbed up to the very top of the tree near his new children's home, so high that he could see all the way over the building into the valley.
Then he tried to step higher, but he was rather short for his age and his red hair was in his eyes and his hand didn't quite reach the branch and he slipped and he fell, like Alice down the rabbit hole, but the ground rushed up to meet him too fast and he landed on his head and he felt his neck snap and his skull smashed open and then everything went dark.
This Ianto meets Jack at age nine and manages to outsmart him! Although we are looking through a slightly different set of lenses now, the story follows canon fairly closely...until Torchwood Three finds out that Ianto is an alien ("And how would you explain to your boss that he's been shagging an alien?" . Poor Jack!), and wackiness ensues in a true Torchwood fashion.
This is a fantastic story, go read and you won't regret it.
