RR -- Fluff

  • Aug. 21st, 2007 at 9:49 AM
As folks who read my fic journal have probably guessed, life's been crazy for me lately.  Not bad, just...crazy.  It's making me a little hyper-critical (another reason why I'm having such a tough time finding fic to rec) and a little frustrated and right now I want nothing more than some good old-fashioned fluff.  Something that is fun and entertaining and yet doesn't require me to think at all.  Do you think you have anything like that handy?

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Fluff

Previous Topics:
Genres:
-Marriage of Convenience
-Harleqin AUs
-Homeless!fic
-Humor

Fandoms:
-Long Due South AUs
-Crime Procedurals (anyone posting Bones (Boothe/Bones) or Monk (Stottlemeyer/Disher) fic gets a rec in any fandom of their choice, even if I have to acquaint myself with the fandom first)
-Due South fic (F/V would be a bonus, as I haven't read any before)
-The Sentinel

You're not the first person to rec HP, but I find myself a little reluctant to try out the fandom because a) the only slash pairing I can personally get is Harry/Draco and the idea of Harry/Snape kind of weirds me out and b) I've gotten more and more disillusioned with each HP novel (to the extent that I haven't been able to bring myself to read Deathly Hollows yet). Of course, I'm running out of fic in my current major fandoms, so I'm going to have to break down soon and branch out. So, never fear, these HP fics will be read (and probably sooner rather than later:)

And you can never go wrong with McShep AUs! I loved A Supermarket in California and will no doubt be reccing it at some point (thanks for the link -- I think this is one of many, many SGA stories that isn't archived). Not sure about Lenore's fic. Is that the one where John's running a matchmaking service?

Thanks for the recs!

Lenore's fic is the one where Rodney is a businessman and John is a relationship coach, and Rodney decides he needs a wife.

And yeah, I can understand the disillusionment with HP-- I had it with OotP, but Deathly Hallows is a much better book than I was expecting. As for Snarry, well, it's definitely not for everyone. I have a lot of problems with H/D though as I just think Draco's a whiny little bastard. Harry/Ron is the only pairing I can really see, canonically, besides Sirius/Remus.

I can't really see H/D from the books, because Draco sucks in the books, but I do think they have chemistry in the movies. Ron has gotten on my nerves lately, primarily because Rowlings seems determined to pair him with Hermione, despite the fact that they have nothing in common and no chemistry in either the books or the movies. If I was going to pick a preferred pairing for HP, it would actually be Harry/Hermione (I *know*! It's been so long since I've read het, I don't know that I could figure out what to do with it if I saw it:)

I think the biggest problem I have with H/S, aside from the huge age difference, is the fact that Snape is Harry's teacher. Position of trust relationships always worry me, because younger people tend to idolize people in authority over them and it makes them behave even more irrationally than teenagers usually do. Not that 'trust' or 'idolizing' has much to do with Harry and Snape's relationship, but the squick is still there.

I think I have read Lenore's fic and really enjoyed it (though, as usual, I wished it were five times longer:)

I like me some Snarry, & especially post-Hogwarts story - I don't think I've liked many student!Harry/teacher!Snape, apart from Telanu's, and maybe a couple others... AuctaSinistra's are for a few stories, I think, & the seminal If You Are Prepared...
I've also really enjoyed FabulaRasa's Snape/Black stories (even though I'm not a great SIrius fan...).
I'm lucky enough to mostly read the canon as variations on a theme post HPIV/HPV, just like the fic, so I can skim over major plot points. The closer it sticks to canon, the less guilty I feel, of course ;-), but I've also grown apart from it over the books.

I think my biggest problem (if you can call it a problem:) is that I really, honestly *want* to like het pairings. Unfortunately, most female characters in today's shows suck (or, if there are good female characters, there isn't much in the way of a fandom -- damnit, I want The Closer fic!) The end result is that anytime I see a great female character, I go totally het for that fandom. My main pairing for X-Files was Mulder/Scully. My pairings for BtVS were all het. Should I dabble my toes in HP, I'd probably search for Harry/Hermione. And I desperately, desperately, want to find Brenda/Sgt. Gabriel (from The Closer -- are you sensing a theme here? :)

(Also, I love me some Alan Rickman, but his version of Snape seriously creeps me out. It's the black hair, I think. *shudder*)

Alan Rickman has many great qualities, but I think he's too old for the role ;-)
