Summary: Guy put it to his mother that of course he meant to invite Judd, he always had, there had never been another friend, who else could there possibly be?
Review: Guy's blossoming love affair with James Harcourt has fallen apart and Guy is feeling betrayed. He's also left with a gap in his life; he was planning to take James along on his summer holiday, and now he decides to take Tommy Judd instead. Tommy is not a bit like James; Tommy is politically inclined, and likes to get into arguments along the way. In fact Tommy is inclined to be tiresome, but when they are far away from everything they know and they are left alone together there is one respect in which Tommy is not merely like James but in fact vastly superior to him.
This is a brief and poignant tale about love and loyalty; nothing showy, nothing explicit, it embodies the sweet relief of having someone reliable to turn to when one's heart is very nearly broken.
