Reader's Rec -- Humor

  • Aug. 9th, 2007 at 4:51 PM
I've been reccing a *lot* of angst lately, so I'd love to get some suggestions for humorous fic to rec.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Humor

Previous Topics:
Genres:
-Marriage of Convenience
-Harleqin AUs
-Homeless!fic

Fandoms:
-Long Due South AUs
-Crime Procedurals (anyone posting Bones (Boothe/Bones) or Monk (Stottlemeyer/Disher) fic gets a rec in any fandom of their choice, even if I have to acquaint myself with the fandom first)
-Due South fic (F/V would be a bonus, as I haven't read any before)

Warning. I have an ... odd... sense of humor.
That being said (let's see if I can get this right this time):

Very short, but very funny:
Shelduck's "Curtains Are Monogamous"
http://sheldrake.livejournal.com/190034.html

This is the fic that had me thinking about my bookcases and my curtains and wondering if I was the cause of trauma.

DC Universe (comicsverse): Lacey McBain's "Kid Stuff":
http://www.stickymanpress.mediawood.net/kidstuff.html
This is part of a larger universe but stands perfectly well on its own. Also, there are hints of m/m relationships inside of it. (Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor in the past, Lex Luthor/Clark Kent, hinting at future Bruce/Wally West)

Gundum Wing: Maldoror's "Trial and Error":
http://gwaddiction.com/p.php?title=Trial+And+Error&author=Maldoror&e1=jenn_ange&e2=yahoo.ca&series=&part=&last=&authorpage=Maldoror&fic=./maldoror/trial

The link goes to the title page that has the listing of all the chapters. This might also go under harlequin, if, well, you know fannon Heero Yu. POV is from Heero's - and Heero is emotionally stunted. Which makes his assumptions about relationships the heart of this story.

... At least I kept to three? Though, if you want recs in general from DCU or GW, I can see what I can find...

Re: Warning. I have an ... odd... sense of humor.
Whee! Recs!

I'm all for DC fic, since I've managed to cobble enough understanding to be able to follow the characters. Gundam Wing is going to be tougher, because I know nothing about the manga/anime series (actually -- *was* it a manga? And isn't there, like, *ten* anime series? *sigh*) Still, this gives me another reason to check GW out.

Thanks for the recs!

Re: Warning. I have an ... odd... sense of humor.
Ok, DCU fic - as always, check astolat. because. Astolat.

I primarily ship Batman/Superman.

And then there are these comms:

The first one is open, I think.
http://community.livejournal.com/worlds_finest/profile

This one might be flocked, but there is fic behind the lock if you're willing to join.
http://community.livejournal.com/wfslash/profile

and this archive (unfortunately, you need to log in to see the fic, sorry).

http://worldsfinest.comicslash.com/

uh. *cough* I'm not sure you want to go there (um. weird is me) but I've written some DCU that's archived there, and at the skyhawke archive (sent you to skyhawke for the HP recs the last time I hit you with a bunch) under "JoAnn"

... Hm. I'm sorry. I'll try to find something that's not under lock to rec to you.

*cough*

Bruce and a dog:

mara's "Everybody has a Birthday":
http://mara.ink-and-quill.com/viewstory.php?sid=198
That's the first page; link down at the bottom to the second page. That first story is gen; this next one is slash (Bruce/Clark)

jen_in_japan's "Puppy Love, or, the Dog Prince"

http://jen-in-japan.livejournal.com/101125.html#cutid1

And this! (how could I forget this one?) Gen.

miarrow's "Five Ways Gothamites Saved Themselves (and others)"

http://miarrow.livejournal.com/7816.html

This - this hurts. Batfamily story:

Brown Betty's "A Time Ago"

http://the-archive.net/viewstory.php?sid=3372&i=1

... ok, pretty much cleaned out my "DCU folder" (of which there was hiding an Authority story, which, whoops!); there's a couple others but those seemed to be the most promising.

GW
Sorry. forgot to answer this - it was an anime series for sure, and I think the manga came after. There are several "Gundum" stories, but I think each iteration stands pretty much alone - or, well. At least, I never read/watched them all.

The particular story I rec'd you is "Gundum Wing".

... Huh. "The Official Gundam Story":
http://www.gundamofficial.com/

... And wiki, of course:

When I'm in need of some warm fuzzy humor-fic, I often turn to [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy's The Grope of Destiny, a cute, sweet -- but not gooey -- Smallville story that never fails to make me smile.

Here are some epic Naruto recs:

If you want laugh-out loud funny that's also kinda beautiful and damn poignant, I recommend The Kakashi Mission by JBMcDragon.

http://tentative.net/JBMcDragon/library/dojo/thekakashimission/index.html

She manages to create the most terrifyingly fucked-up Kakashi ever, and yet the very level of his neurosis manages to be deeply sad and hysterically funny at the same time. The rest of the Jounin are well-represented, and she mines Kakashi's backstory better than pretty much anyone else I've read.

Maldoror's Diplomatic Relations isn't so much a humour fic as it is a brilliantly written love story featuring two of the most unique characters in a fandom filled with quirky and fabulous people. It's Lee/Gaara, and Maldoror takes on both characters' canonically obsessive personalities and shows how they work. Gah. It's brilliant.

And because both Rock Lee and Sabaku no Gaara are so, so bloody insane, and even more so because of the unique ways in which their respective obsessions manifest around each other, their mutual journey is often fabulously amusing.

http://maldoror-gw.livejournal.com/30383.html

Really, you can't go wrong with Maldoror for anything. She's kinda like the Speranza of GW, One Piece, & Naruto. She captures the characters so well that you don't even have to have read/watched the shows to be entertained, and if you have read/watched the shows, you'll be in awe.

Labyrinthine Interlude is a fabulous and very, very funny shortish-medium length gen OP fic that could slip right into canon.

I love this com!! Thanks for creating it!!

Thanks for the recs! I've recently, ahem, acquired the first thirty volumes or so of Naruto, so I'll be digging into the canon very soon (especially since it seems Naruto produces some quality fic, which is kind of unusual when you consider anime fanfic as a whole).

Glad you're enjoying the comm -- I'm really enjoying reccing (and getting recs in return:)

HikaGo rec
Um. I'm not sure exactly where to put this. It isn't a 'humor' rec per se, more of a 'drama' rec. It actually doesn't fit any of your reader rec categories, but I kinda thought you'd like it. It's good and it's funny in parts, and it's damn long and you seem to like HnG, soo...

Balance by SailorMac

http://www.txq.nu/jumpyboys/viewstory.php?sid=121

it's Hikaru/Akira and it picks up where the anime leaves off. It's about how the boys negotiate the transition of their relationship from where it is at the end of the anime into a stable and committed adult relationship. This being Hikaru and Akira, it takes a while.

Oh - and all the links I've posted (except the shortish story one)link to chapter indexes. I like to bookmark there so I can always come back to the list of chapters in one click.

Yay!

Re: HikaGo rec
Thanks for the link! I have read this, but I couldn't find it again (not to mention the fact that the last time I found it, it was on Geocities and kept giving me 'too much traffic' errors).

BTW, keep storing up the anime fic recs -- I'm going to offer that as a topic very soon (probably next week, since this week is dedicated to The Sentinel).

Thanks again:)
