Author's Summary: The obligatory Pon Farr story . . . with a bit of a twist.
Review:
On a diplomatic mission, Nocteans, who are eager to please the Federation, offer Captain Kirk a gift they have deemed most valuable to Kirk – the chance to save Spock’s life. Of course, the most exciting things always happen on diplomatic missions.
I’m just going to come outright and say it: this is a body-swapping story. There. I’ve vehemently disliked stories of this genre and have never read any before this one because it has always seemed a little creepy to be romantically/sexually attracted to someone who is the current inhabitant of your body. Talk about narcissism to the extreme. To be honest, the only reason I even gave Through Blind Men's Eyes a try was because the summary didn’t mention any body-swapping. But oh boy, do I not regret this one bit!
I loved reading about Kirk’s experiences in Spock’s body – the temperature sensitivity, the metabolic changes, the heightened hearing, and oh hey, guess whom this body is attracted to. As Spock would put it: fascinating! The having-sex-with-oneself sex is minimal and short (they switch back almost immediately after) and didn’t weird me out too much. Highly recommended!

But first,
The characterizations are breathtaking. The action is exciting. About the only negative thing I can say about the whole thing is the last chapter used a bit too much canon for my taste. The chapter called "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is actually written by two of the authors friends. And although it's a good story, and I can totally see it fitting in the canon of this bigger story, I'd either read it at the end, or closer to the beginning than it's placed. Also, the * is totally a tear-jerker. (The boys end up together though, promise.)
So, thanks for the rec, and now I'm off to read...
Hee, Only Good For Legends is getting rec'ed next week. I've been waiting for months for it to finish, but it's totally worth the wait. And Spock's brother...
Body-swap fics are definitely interesting. On one hand they can be a bit creepy. On the other hand it's fascinating to read the characters' reactions and interactions. So if it's good writing and you're open-minded, you can usually get past the creepy.
