Therapy for the Soul by Lyn (NC-17)

  • Dec. 12th, 2007 at 12:27 PM
A non-Samurai Champloo rec! Basically I've started to get quite the backlog of Sentinel recs, so I'm going to start tossing a few of these into the mix, for those folks who don't read anime fic. Enjoy!

Title: Therapy for the Soul
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: Angst, h/c
Length: epic
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: n/a?
Author Website: http://brothersinarms.tvheaven.com/

Review:
Here's the thing -- the first few parts of this fic are really, really rough. Once the plot picks up, however, the writing smooths out and the story draws you in. If you're patient, you'll find a great story.

The plot: after (foolishly) traipsing off to Mexico two days after being drowned, Blair gets even sicker (if only canon were so logical). The story follows Blair's illness from the drowning to recovery (several months later); and I don't know if Lyn is in the medical profession or if she just did a lot of research, but the medical facts all sound reasonable giving the story as a whole a lovely feel of authenticity. Plus, in a truly Sentinel twist, you get a mystery in the last half of the story (because God forbid Blair get medical treatment without a potential serial killer being nearby). Best of all, on top of all of that wonderful h/c goodness you get the added bonus of a developing relationship between Jim and Blair. If you're looking for hurt/comfort with a first-time twist, this is the story for you.

I must say, Jane, that this is the least needed to be recced story in the Sentinel fandom. But I have very much enjoyed the stories you've been sharing in TS and especially Due South which is a new fandom for me.

In that it wasn't any good or that it's been recced many times before?

Glad you're enjoying the majority of my recs -- I have a lot of fun writing them (and, you know, having an excuse to read gobs of fanfic:)

Jane, it's just one of those ludicrous deals you see sometimes in fandom. The author, or her twin sister, find reason to rec this story at least once a week on the major TS rec mailing list. After a while it just becomes absurd; know what I mean? That Lyn is also one of the mods of the list only adds to the ridiculousness. *g*

But I agree that any excuse to read gobs of fanfic can only be a good thing. And I'm just like Pavlov's dog; rec a story I love and I immediately have to sit down and reread it. For a while there, when you were reccing Aly every other day or so, I wasn't getting ANYTHING done!

Now if you would please find me a few hundred more long wonderful Vecchio stories I'd be a happy camper! I've been reading and enjoying the Kowalski stories too, he's a great character, but Vecchio is my true love!

Ick. I didn't know about that. Certainly if I had, I wouldn't have even read the story, much less recced it (and frankly, I'll probably never read anything by Lyn again -- I have a tough time separating an author's works from his/her bad behavior).

And more Aly's coming soon, though I'm just about finished with her body of work. Now she just needs to write something else!

I'd love to rec you some Vecchio stories, if someone would just rec me some first! (Um, to make that make sense: the first story I read in a fandom/pairing hugely impacts my willingness to continue to read that fandom/pairing, and I'm so worried that I'll get a bad Vecchio story and not be able to make myself read another.) So, um, any recs? Also, I'm working on a really long Vecchio story myself (Vecchio/Stella, unfortunately, but after working on this for the last few weeks, I almost like her:); it's the 800th or so WIP in my 'get finished *right now*' folder.

Let me think about what I can rec to you once I get home and can check my bookmarks. My absolute fave Vecchio story is a work in progress. But there are others, I just have to find them.

Vecchio/Stella, huh? It would be hard but I'd give it a try. One gets spoiled with the boykissage! He is such an amazing character I find him compelling in all combinations.

I know; this is my first attempt at het in a long, looong time, so I was kind of nervous (especially since I never bought them getting together on the show). However, now that I've started writing her (and thank goodness I started before rewatching the Stella episodes, because I forgot how awful she was), she's growing on me. Possibly because I'm focusing less on her shrewish-bitch side and more on her highly-intelligent-woman-holding-her-own-in-a-man's-world side.

Looking forward to the recs:)

I'm interested in this story, "Therapy for the Soul," which I've never read and which I've never seen recced. I'm new to LiveJournal and I'm not on any Jim/Blair lists, so I don't get to see these recs anyplace else! I'm always on the lookout for decent Jim/Blair stories, the longer the better. So, thank you for the rec and for sharing your extensive background in various fandoms!

Also, I'm a Kowalski girl but I certainly love Vecchio as well. I'd be very interested in any truly good Veccio/Fraser stories - detailed rec not necessary, just that they're good and a link! Thanks again.
Love, mxm

Oh, good! I have to admit, the vast majority of my recs have been recced elsewhere, so my main draw is how much information I provide in my reviews (which is considerably more than you find elsewhere -- I designed them after getting frustrated with single line recs that included no information on length, category, etc). It's really nice to have new readers, however, as there's a chance they'll be discovering stories for the first time:)

I have the potential to be a Vecchio/Fraser girl, but so far I haven't found a good place to get into the pairing and I'm afraid of souring myself by just randomly clicking on stories (that's something I do after I've been well and truly hooked:) I keep asking for F/V recs though, so hopefully one of those will pan out and give me a way in.

Thanks for the feedback!

I feel the exact same way about getting into Vecchio/Fraser stories. I've read a few (didn't keep track, tho) which are F/V/K, also a few V/K. But being a F/K girl, I haven't really read many F/V. (Also, a few years back when I was writing dS fanfic, and into a dS "list," it was pretty much heresy to even mention Vecchio's name in any positive light, the war was so strong between the Vecchio-ists and the Kowalski-ists! I once wrote a little story in which Fraser had a friendship relationship with Vecchio and a romantic relationship with Kowalski: it did not really go over well, even so! At any rate, a good Vecchio/Fraser story is a good STORY, and I love the series and the main characters enough to be interested.

Love, Maxine

is my website url, wherein you will find, along with lots of HL/Methos stories, 17 F/K dS stories I wrote a few years back. If you have a minute you might enjoy some of my stuff! Shameless hussy that I am! Love, mxm

I entered the scene well after the Kowalski vs. Vecchio debates. It's a good thing, too, since I'm a huge fan of both characters, and it's a rare day when I'll rec a story that badmouths Vecchio (to date I think there's been one and that might be the only one ever -- half of the rec was me bitching about how Vecchio was the bad guy:) The only reason that I primarily read F/K is that's what I found when entering the fandom and I haven't found anyone who recs Vecchio (yet -- there has to be *someone* out there who can point me in the right direction, darn it!)

Ah-ha! I knew your name sounded familiar:) I downloaded a ton of stories and have placed them in my to-read folder for when life gets less insane (hopefully in the new year). Thanks for the link!

Oh, thanks for doing that with my stories! I feel so badly that I haven't written in years, even tho I've been interested in many fandoms and characters since dueSouth (SG1 and SGA, for example). Just, museless in the Bronx.... So when I occasionally get a comment via email from someone who has come upon an old story of mine, it warms my heart! If you like anything I've written, do tell! It will make my day, for sure!
Love, Max

Normally I suck at feedback (hence the rec community -- I'm thinking about leaving links to the authors to make up for the lack of feedback over the years:), but I'll make an exception for you.

Enjoy the recs!

Thanks for the rec.

It may have seem that I've fallen off the face of earth. I haven't. Just extremely busy with Christmas stuff. Who the hell invented Christmas again? I need to have a talk with that guy. Anyway, hope you had as nice (enough) trip. :)

I feel your pain. Amazing how much you can look forward to this holiday as a kid, and then dread it as an adult. Can't wait for the new year.

(Also, still looking forward to those recs:)
