Fair warning for CSI fans: Nick and Greg do show up in this fic, but it's not until about two-thirds of the way through and they only hang around for a few pages. Trust me, though, it's worth the wait. This fic is what turned me on to Nick/Greg (and the entire CSI fandom) in the first place.

The Smallville CSI fic, featuring Lex, Clark, Chloe, Lois, Whitney, and Perry (with cameos by Lana, and the Kents). In this universe, a near-suicidal Lex was saved at the river by Jonathan, instead of Clark. That good deed was enough to cause Lex to break with his father and find his own path in life, working in the DNA lab of the Metropolis CSI unit. Unfortunately, his past comes back to haunt him when Dominic Senatori turns up dead and the resulting investigation turns up evidence of a massive child prostitution/pornography ring. Senatori's first victim: Lex. Fortunately Lex finds support in his growing relationship with Clark, and in his friendship with his co-works.

Thankfully, Kat manages to handle a very dark subject matter in such a way as to communicate the seriousness of the crime without making the story too painful to read. Couple that with some excellent characterization and a great plot and you have a wonderful, engaging story.
