RR -- Literary Fandoms
- Mar. 15th, 2010 at 12:23 AM
March is National Reading Month and to celebrate, we're seeking recs in all print-based fandoms. Fic based on novels, graphic novels, poetry, short stories -- they're all welcome here!
Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
That said, have at it!

I'm personally a huge fan of reading, and one of the reasons why I'm so frustrated with the US educational system is that they choose such terrible books for assigned reading. If we want our students to learn to love to read, we need to be introducing them to books that are actually entertaining. Sure, include the classics (though you will *never* get me to agree that Billy Budd should be assigned anywhere earlier than college -- just because it's short doesn't mean that it's appropriate or comprehensible to high school students), but also include more modern stories that actually speak to our kids (Ender's Game, for example).

This fic is a joy to read, not only because of the footnotes and tangents, but because Rheanna's managed to captured the anarchic, improvisational heart of the entire series, and I gotta give her (him?) props for that. So, in the spirit of Nat'l Reading Month, I command all who read this to click the link and read this fic, for it is wonderful :)

This is such an incredibly charming AU. My heart goes out to Crowley in this fic, who isn't as wicked as in canon, but it's definitely him in so many ways.

Review:
Marie is just your average Canadian University student studying pop culture. Once upon a time, she would have jumped at an opportunity to meet her favourite characters and travel through her favourite fandoms….but that was when she was younger, more naïve…and still human. Things change.
This is honestly one of the best pieces of fanfiction – or even fiction, that I’ve ever read. Although Marie’s journey takes the reader through multiple fandoms, each one is an adventure unto itself and hugely entertaining as well. The author uses Marie to explore and challenge the very idea of what it means to be a Mary Sue, but does so in a way that’s funny, intelligent and in some cases, tragic. Her character is a juxtaposition of textbook Mary Sue, and fully realized flesh and blood character all at the same time.
The fandoms themselves range from anime, to various film and television series’ as well as numerous literary works. The author is careful never to lose the voice of any of her characters – regardless of fandom or storyline. At the same time, she is always aware of Marie’s presence as a Mary Sue, altering the way some characters might perceive or behave. It’s both entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.
The nature of the fandoms are wide and varied, so think there’s a universality to this fic as well. It’s emotional, but not overdone and angsty. You find yourself getting caught up in each fandom, and disappointed when Marie slips into the next one.
I would recommend this fic for anybody who appreciates good, honest storytelling and well done plot and character development.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Categories: Humor, Romance, Crack
Length: Long (~27,000 words)
Warnings: many, many clichés, OOC (but it's really good! I swear!)
Author on LJ:
Website: The Zone (http://www.squidge.org/~kali/)
Summary: Years after Voldemort's downfall, Harry and Severus work together to take down the Merchants of Death, invent an entire new branch of magic, get detention, and have copious amounts of sex with each other. (with additional commentary by Hermione Granger)
Review:
I won't lie, a lot of the plot is held up by fandom clichés and OOC- but goddamnit, Kai takes those clichés and runs with it, creating an entertaining, clever post-series story (though it doesn't follow canon past Goblet of Fire, so Sirius and Dumbledore aren't dead! Yay!) that is a joy to read. It also has the additional joy of having a book-within-a-book format, so you get to have a future!outsider POV while you see how the story *actually* plays out. And c'mon, who can resist Hermione writing for 'Hogwarts: A History'?! [is a geek :) ]
Contemporary Magical Innovations, by H. Granger (http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=778)
Fandom: Moby Dick.
Pairing: Ishmael/Queequeg.
Length: 7,00o words.
Rated: R
A retelling of Queequeg's backstory and his first meeting with Ishmael. Somehow, the author manages to make it dovetail brilliantly with canon AND make Queequeg a three-dimensional character.

Pairing: Klaus/Dorian
These are a couple of my favorites from this fandom, and they are my favorites because 1) the characterizations are very true to the manga and 2) the stories are well written.
Anne-Li's Not So Horrible (http://anne-li.slashcity.net/notsohorrible.html) series - lovely explanation of Klaus' sexuality in the first story, an interesting mystery in the second story, and a slow build that is probably going to drive me crazy before they actually "do it". Pre-slash (so far)
Sleeps with Coyotes writes wonderful stories, including several in Eroica fandom. My favorite is Hold (http://ciceqi.slashcity.com/Hold.htm) which contains a very in-character Klaus (hard to do and make it also slashy), and the kind of quirky humor Coyo is known for. Pre-slash
I love amnesia stories and The Iron Mask (http://belladonna.org/ironmask.html) by Kadorienne is a great one. Klaus' predicament and the way he deals with it is so typical of the man! PG Slash
There are a lot of good stories that have come out of the Yuletide Treasures fest. One of my favorites is Breaking and Entering (http://archiveofourown.org/works/34385). Eroica is particularly well-written, showing the talented thief who is braver than he thinks. Pre-slash
Another wonderful Fest story, with beautifully complicated and layered characterizations of both Dorian and Klaus is An Almost Perfect Alibi (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/83/analmost.html). PG slash.
I could go on and on, but I'll conclude with one more, an unusual cross-over with another literature fandom, Harry Potter. The story is The Curse of the Eberbachs" (http://anne-li.slashcity.net/curse/index.html) by Heather Sparrows and Anne-Li, and it contains one of the most...unusual portrayals of Klaus that I've seen. And it's long, which I also love. PG slash.

What Is Meant to Be by ak-stinger
Warnings: MPREG (if this shocks and/or disgusts you in any way, please scroll up and read that first paragraph). SLASH (of the Aragorn/Legolas variety). AU (Aragorn and Legolas are happily married and Arwen never existed).
Why I love it : It was a good long story and I enjoyed the progression--I also like that both Estel and Legolas were both innocent and grew together in their love. I also love Estel loving legolas all of his life..that was totally sweet.
first story - What is Expected of Stars (a prequel)
Summary: A supplement to What is Meant to Be, What Love Brought Into Being, and What Dreams Can Tell Us. This is about Legolas' childhood, how he came to be known as the Sun Star, and how he and his father dealt with it (a crappy summary, I know, but to the point).

second story - What is Meant to Be
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1926189/1/What_Is_Meant_to_Be
Actually and interlude What Dreams Can Tell Us
Summary: Set (for the most part) after Chapter 4 in What is Meant to Be. A compelling and intriguing dream about Estel (Aragorn) and Legolas inspires Mithrandir to journey to Rivendell. His visit couldn't have come at a better time for Estel, whose heart is broken after Legolas departs for Mirkwood.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2182476/1/What_Dreams_Can_Tell_Us
What Love Brought Into Being - third story in series
Summary: Sequel to What Is Meant To Be, although it's probably not vital to read that to understand this (but you can if you want!) Four years have passed since Aragorn and Legolas wed, and what four blissful years they were! But now, as representatives from the different lands gather in Gondor, the couple must deal with the growing political pressure to provide the kingdom with an heir at all costs – and what happens when that becomes a possibility in a rather unexpected way.

What the Future May Hold- last story
Summary: Almost thirteen years have passed since the end of What Love Brought Into Being and Aragorn and Legolas' family has grown. Now their eldest child, son Eldarion, stands between his childhood and the responsibilities of adulthood that loom ahead as his thirteenth birthday draws near. When a threat from the past threatens the future, how will he respond? Will Legolas, Aragorn, and their family and friends be able to sort through the confusion and clues before it's too late?

Do Not Think It Means
http://thehoyden.livejournal.com/231726.html
(10,000 words) Completely diverges from canon from the middle of the last chapter of Book 5. Yay happy ending! "Look, I'm with you on this one -- he's dumber than he looks. But we were on a mission of mercy, I swear!"
A Rather Nasty Curse
http://jade-dragoness.livejournal.com/40939.html?style=mine
(10,000 words) Good narrative voice for Harry. "Marcone has been hit with a ‘fuck or die’ curse. Only it has a nasty twist."
Please Hang Up And Try Again
http://bookshop.livejournal.com/896393.html
(7,800 words) Wacky, rom-com Harry/Marcone.

Kissing The Tiger
http://icarus-chained.livejournal.com/1076.html
(6,300 words) "Just your average day in the life of Harry Dresden. Pretend to be gay in front of half of CPD. Rescue your average mob-boss-in-distress from a face eating demon who just slaughtered his men. Get snogged."
P.S. If you like those... I have a couple more links for longer Harry/Marcone fics that I haven't read yet, so I didn't rec:

All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues by randomeliza
Focus: Good Omens/Alias Crossover - Adam Young/Julian Sark slash
http://archiveofourown.org/series/605
(5,900 words) "Curiosity is a valuable and dangerous thing, young Mr. Sark," Morningstar says with a smile. In which Sark from 'Alias' finds Lower Tadfield. I loved this SO MUCH.
A Precise and Accurate History of Monday, Eleven Years Later
Focus: Aziraphale/Crowley slash
http://www.anyroad.org/geekdom/monday.html
(16,200 words) Oh, I love them! And Adam is great as well. "In eleven years, everything will have changed. Well, ok, not everything everything. Some things are eternal. Ducks, for example."
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Kiss a Boy in Tokyo Town by veritasrecords
Focus: Percy/Nico slash (primary pairing); some Percy/Annabeth
http://community.livejournal.com/veritasrecords/88203.html
(59,000 words) Post-Series. Olympus shifts from America and Percy shifts into a new life, balancing old traditions tucked inside a new land and a new love against the shadow of his childhood sweetheart. The writing is excellent, and this idea is something I was eager to see (as the series conceit of Olympus being located at the powerful-country-of-the-moment was just begging for it) . The P/N is appealing and the characters ring true. Percy is just as much as a clueless dick as he was with the Rachel thing. And Nico is awesome.
"Hi," says Nico di Angelo, glaring up at him around the hands he has clamped to his nose. "You have a crap apartment. Seriously. Like, I thought you couldn't get any worse than some of the places in New York, but pfffff. Also," he admits somewhat grudgingly, pulling his hands away to inspect them; blood glints redly on his fingertips. "You have a mean right hook."
The Last Cry in Hades (Not Guilty)
Focus: Percy/Nico slash
http://community.livejournal.com/veritasrecords/87133.html
(7,350 words) I have an insane amount of love for this story. This is an inspired pairing, and the fic makes it work perfectly. Great coda for the series.
"And then, Percy's arms snatching him around the chest, yanking him back out of the way of something that would have dissolved him into dust, and the warmth of the contact made Nico draw in one great, shuddering gasp, his heart lurching like it had just remembered how to beat. He will always remember that, he thinks. How the world felt like it was tipping and sliding sideways, the fragile china shattering, the flowers tipping, and then Percy caught him. Percy caught him."
Fairytales
Memories of You Being Beautiful
Focus: Grimm's Fairy Tales - Briar Rose/Snow White
http://comeonbabyfunky.livejournal.com/4814.html
(15,300 words) This is so CRAZY BAD ASS. Surreal, dreamy, despondent genius. Briar Rose has already been there, cursed, for three thousand days when Snow White appears. "The girl's name is Snow White, and if Briar Rose hadn't been given contentedness from the seventh wise woman, she might understand the jealousy that drove Snow White's step-mother to such lengths. Briar Rose has never seen such beauty (not even her mother who'd had suitors tourney a glass hill for her hand when she was a girl) and she reaches out to brush back Snow White's hair. It's soft and shiny, as black as the night sky in their dream world, and frames such a pale, pale face. "
Percy Jackson fic? Yay. Thank you!
