Announcing Safe To Read

  • Jan. 30th, 2010 at 9:27 PM
In a recent fandom-related discussion, I mentioned that I almost never read published fiction anymore because I'm wary of stumbling across one of my major squicks (character death, rape, incest).  Of course, the obvious solution here is published fic warnings; unfortunately publishers aren't particularly good about providing such warnings.

Thus, I offer you [livejournal.com profile] safetoread .  It's a comm where folks can report triggering/squicky content for a specific published novel or report that novel safe to read.

At the moment I'm still working out the finer details, mainly the standard set of warnings for comm purposes.  If you have any suggestions, please respond to this post.

Safe reading!

Does it also include my biggest squick? First person POV? I really cannot stand it...and there's the whole past tense versus present debate as well... I get squicked by things very similar to what you get squicked by, but if they're written well, I can definitely deal with it.

On a side note: I was at a local Irish pub tonight, with live music and raucous dancing, and happened to notice a sign on the wall. Tir na nog. It meant something...what I cannot remember, but it seemed so intriguing at the time. Is that where Tira_Nog got the name? If so, kudos.

If you would be willing to try a Xander/Giles fic or two, I'd be willing to rec them.

Good night!

That would be a no. Though, generally speaking, you can tell the POV and the tense of the book within the first paragraph:)

Rec away!

Just Thanks
I think this is a good idea. I have three times been happily reading and suddenly found myself in the middle of the biggest squick of all: "domestic discipline."

I'll keep an eye out for your site.

Re: Just Thanks
In published novels? Wow. I'm fortunate in that I've never actually encountered a DD fic at all and I'm grateful for it:)

At any rate, you're welcome!

Re: Just Thanks
You know, I may have misread. I thought you meant published fanfic novels (online or zine). You mean actual trade novels, don't you?

My bad.
