Review:
Okay, so I'm springing some obscure fandom on you guys. But, I figured, since this is one of the ones I'll be doing anyway, why not introduce it now?

Gordon Korman was one of the kid's book authors that I still read, because he makes me laugh, and also because he writes "2-close-male-friends" in nearly all of the books, and fandom finds this very slashy indeed. This book, Don't Care High, is one of his oneshot books. Most of my recs will be for the "Bruno & Boots/MacDonald Hall" series and for the oneshot I Want To Go Home, because those are the big draws in fandom. I never thought I'd see a Don't Care High fic, actually.

Don't Care High was about a high school, and the Canadian who moves to it, who is flabbergasted at the total apathy of the student body. He inadvertently, through his efforts to get people to be excited about anything, turns the students into motivated, insanely-devoted-to-the-student-president, destructive mobs. The book ends after the reclusive president (who really needs a fic of his own) moves away. This fic made me wonder for the first time what happened afterward. After all, without a focus, where could all that mob energy go?

A first-time romance springs up, mostly of the pining vs. oblivious kind. The main character, Paul, and his friend, Sheldon, are our romantic leads. Paul canonically stinks with romance, and if anyone could work it out with him, it's Sheldon. The author did a good job tying together small details from the book, and in keeping the fic firmly set in the 1980s. I'm glad that, if there is ever only one DCH fic, that it's this one.

What a lovely rec! I have to admit, I've never even *heard* of this fandom, but now I sort of want to go track down Korman's books:) Thanks!

Warning!
I used the past tense in describing GK, because his current books (anything post mid-1990s) *stink*. He was a teen author, and his books really reflected how much he himself related to the high-school experience (and camp, family vacations, etc.). Now that he's been out of school for years, you can tell that he's lost that ability to relate. The current books - well, I tried them, and they were hard to swallow.

So, if you want to start some GK, go with the MacDonald Hall books, and the oneshots "A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag", "Son of Interflux", "I Want To Go Home", "Don't Care High", "Who Is Bugs Potter" and sequel "Bugs Potter Live At Nickaninny!"... the books set in the 1980s & early 1990s, basically. It's all cute humor, and some Canadian-isms. Some of them are hard to find, and others were reprinted recently with "American" titles and updates (Walkmans becoming iPods).

Thank you for the change! Could you add the rating to the subject line as well? Check out the subject on my post (the one right before yours) to see what I mean.

Thanks again!

You're welcome! And good luck!
I warned Jane_Elliot, above, about GK - so, same warning applies. But I hope you like the books you do find; I picked one up by accident in the 6th grade and never really put them down. Daniel Pinkwater may be a little better, but they're both great kid's humor authors.

Thank you for the Kormanslash, I've never read the books but ever since I read [personal profile] calathea's A Very long summer I've been hooked.

I'll be recommending Calathea's stuff soon enough - and GK in his good years was absolutely as good as some of her epics. :) Perhaps no *explicit* slash, but hey...
Hope you like it!
