RR -- Family

  • Jan. 24th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
We're just about at the end of Family Week at Epic Recs and now it's time for you to rec family-oriented fics to us.  Found family?  Making a family?  Holding a family together?  All great!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one). We are actively seeking new reccers at the moment. If you'd like to be considered, be sure to do a full review similar to the reviews posted on the comm.

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Family

This is just a tiny selection of the fics I have bookmarked under "family relationships". It's one of my favourite themes.

The Time Traveler's Daughter (http://speedgeek.livejournal.com/19318.html) by speedy
Torchwood. "He always said he'd be there for her, whether she wants him there or not."
The only Jack & Alice fic I've found that I actually liked.

So Wise We Grow (http://captanddeastar.livejournal.com/9048.html) by Deastar
Star Trek XI. "Commander Spock, we have located your son," the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. "If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week."
I'm not a massive kidfic fan but every so often one appeals to me, and this one did.

Untold Weasley Tales (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3848378/1/Untold_Weasley_Tales) by lionesseyes13
Harry Potter. "The oldest Weasley brother grows from a two year old wizard who won't eat his turnips to a grown wizard in his own right."
Centres on Bill Weasley and his family. A little too kiddie at the beginning, and some annoying moments of overprotectiveness towards Ginny, but overall an enjoyable fic which has the best portrayal of the time immediately after the end of DH I've so far found.

Going Home (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3825613/1/Going_Home) by Titan5
Stargate Atlantis. "John is sent back to Earth to recover from his latest set of injuries and decides to visit his father. He is very surprised at the homecoming he receives."
I went through a period of reading every story I could find featuring John's family. This isn't the only good one, but it's the longest.

Nature or Nurture (http://sg1-heliopolis.com/adult/viewstory.php?sid=966) by Tribal Matriarch
Stargate SG-1. "An AU in which both Sam and Jack have serious past traumas that cause their lives to go somewhat differently. Essentially a re-write of s1, with Sam as a traumatised civilian and her brother Mark a member of SG-1."
Not the kind of thing I usually read at all, but it was surprisingly well-written.

Past and Present (http://www.xwpilots.de/Dateien/pastpresent.html) by Petra
Star Wars EU. "Shortly before the Battle of Ithor, Wedge meets a member of his family he didn't even know existed."
This is a scene I really wish that they'd included in the NJO books.

No Difference (http://www.potionsandsnitches.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=1480) by Attackfish
Harry Potter. "After Harry talks to Dumbledore in Deathly Hallows, he takes a little detour to Spinner’s End, back before it was Snape’s house, back when it belonged to a woman named Eileen Prince. Snape couldn’t be angrier."
Based on my prompt, and a million times better than I expected when I submitted it to the challenge.

Castles in the Air (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2396418/1/) by Lasrevinu
CSI. "I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship."
One of the better Grissom/Sara adoption kidfics.

I'll stop there, but really I could go on for ages.

Seconding "So Wise We Grow"! I really don't like kid-fic but I ended up riveted by this story. I think it helps that the kid is older, and the Vulcan cultural aspect.

I think one of my favorite family fics is Vignettes and Thoughts upon a Life Unplanned but Well Loved (http://ladygray99.livejournal.com/15241.html) by [livejournal.com profile] ladygray99. Numb3rs fic, mainly Charlie/Colby but Don ends up married to an OC. What I love about it is how Colby just sort of stumbles into this wonderful family life with Charlie and the Eppes and doesn't plan on it. It's just that one day he's all but married to Charlie and helping him raise a daughter from a one night stand and meeting with teachers.

I love not just how Colby and Charlie is with Ester, Charlie's daughter, but Uncle Don is her wing man and she goes to him about her first break up and Uncle Ian not only teaches her how to snipe but buys her party dresses and goes to Career Day at school with Ester and it's just romantic and lovely and just wonderful. Seven new chapters were added recently where Colby takes Ester and Charlie home to a family reunion in Iowa and one of his nephews is just home from the war and has PTSD and it's just such a lovely story.

I absolutely have to second the HP fic Secrets. One of the best ways that it is a "family" fic is that it not only deals with blood family and associated dramas but also the family that Harry makes and the roles that various people fill in that family.

Inheritance, by Dasha (PG-13)
Title: Inheritance
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: gen
Length: Medium (~6000 words)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dashamte
Web Site: Cascade Library-Authors-Dasha (http://www.skeeter63.org/~tslibrary/authors/auth-dasha.htm)

Author's Summary: Rules of consanguinity, sentinel genetics, and fictive kinship.
Review: There is a lot about William Ellison that is easy to hate, but it takes a good writer to find the parts of him that don't make me want to call CPS on his ass- and [livejournal.com profile] dashamte is one of those writers. This is a story about a fundamentally broken family, trying to reconnect with their prodigal son, even though his differences make it hard for them. I loved the tension between the Ellisons, and I loved Steven's narration, which I think was pretty spot on. All in all, this is a family fic I wouldn't pass on reading!

Yipee!!!
I LOVE family fic. And if I hadn't just stumbled across a decent Snape/Harry recs list I would currently be reading everything you have recced this week.

So...I don't believe you have the BEST kid!fic in the SGA 'verse in your archives. On Life and Living (http://home.comcast.net/~wesleysgirl/fanfiction/sga/life.html) by the ever charming [livejournal.com profile] wesleysgirl is one of those kid!fics that actually manages to get it right. Rodney is not suddenly some paradigm of the perfect dad. Elizabeth is loved and mourned. The ending of this fic...is utter perfection. I very rarely cry from happiness, but this fic brought me to tears, each of the three times I read it. (over 30,000 + sequels which I've never read)

Next, something I know Jane won't read, SPN RPS. It's a M-PREG people. And it's insanely well done. Totally au, since Jensen's a doctor and Jared's a student. Ooh, and Jensen's not the dad...or would that be other dad? The Seahorse (http://memphis86.livejournal.com/125317.html) is one of the greats, by [livejournal.com profile] memphis86. (over 30,000 words with a 40,000 word sequel which...I've never read...yeah I know I'm bad)

Okay, so the format of this thing's a bitch. On lj with over 100 parts. And so far as I can tell still a wip. But if you're looking for fantastic family fic, look no further. The S Curve (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=tesla321&keyword=The+S+Curve&filter=all) is so sweet...so long...so angsty...so real. It's a BTVS human AU wherein 'things happen' and Angel moves in with Xander and his folks. Tony and Jessica in this fic are so perfect, mainly because of imperfections, and the boys falling for each is written so realistically. Then there's the fact that literally every canon character is in this story. I just can't praise it enough. And although I know you won't read it now, when [livejournal.com profile] tesla321 does finish I'm going to petition the creation of a pdf version. Because everyone should read this.

So, I'm finally finding some good hp fics (woot) and it's sooo happy-making. But I've been wondering if there are any Sentinel fics you rec more than others. Thanks sweetie!

Part 1: SGA
*cracks knuckles*

God, I love kidfic--33 tags on my delicious best o' the best account!

For SGA, of course, there is Sheafrotherdon's A Farm in Iowa universe. Amazing, with several epic-length stories in an earth-side AU where John gets out after Afghanistan and inherits his grandfather's farm, and Rodney breaks down at the side of his road. The link is to the master post, with stories listed in storyline chronological order rather than publication order.

http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/105567.html

Another excellent SGA fic, though much much less fuzzy, is the SGA Big Bang fic The Price That Life Exacts by Cathalin. A story in which John has disappeared, and then they find his baby girl, who only likes Rodney. A very angsty, H/C story about grief and life and Rodney dealing with a baby, and John. 64k words.

Author's summary: When John disappears without a trace during a routine mission, people in a beleaguered Atlantis eventually have to try to move on. Rodney never completely gives up hope of finding John, and though he soldiers on to help Atlantis, a year later he still lives every day with his grief.
The story opens with a shocking discovery that may help Rodney come to terms with some truths about himself and his relationship with John, and will have consequences beyond what anyone might predict.

Author's warnings: This story briefly alludes to off-camera dubious consent het, as well as off-camera mistreatment of John (not sexual), and contains one scene with fairly intense violence perpetrated against a bad person (not sexual). If anyone wants more information before they read, please feel free to email the author.

http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=38

And finally, another fairly fluffy SGA kidfic is Small Primes and Square Roots by Liviapenn, in which Jeannie chooses Lt. John Sheppard to be her sperm donor, but then dies and leaves Rodney with the kid. 10 or so years later, John decides to look her up and finds Rodney instead.

Part 2: Bandom
Forever Now's already been recced, so all I'll say is that it's one of my favorite kidfic series ever.

Another favorite of mine is Bob Bryar's Secret Baby Project, by Carleton97. My Chemical Romance's drummer Bob Bryar, has a daughter no one but him knows about until the mother dies in a car accident and Bob has to bring his little girl on tour.

Band(s): My Chemical Romance (with a brief appearance by members of Fall Out Boy)
Pairing(s): Bob Bryar/Brian Schechter
Word Count: ~ 26,800
Rating/Warnings: NC17
Summary: Bob Bryar is a man of mystery, even Frank says so. What if there was a reason for his reticence?

http://carleton97.livejournal.com/211026.html

An awesomely fluffy kidfic is Etben's Throw a Little Sparkle All Over It. A fan leaves her baby on MCR's (bus) doorstep, and Gerard chooses to adopt her.

throw a little sparkle all over it
Band(s): MCR
Pairing(s): Frank/Gerard
Word Count: 26,000
Rating/Warnings: R, but only barely
Author Notes: Babies and associated ridiculousness.

http://etben.livejournal.com/96371.html

One of my favorites in this fandom (and one of the few mpreg fics in bandom that I can read--there's something about RPS which makes it soooo not mpreg-friendly the way that alien tech or magic is) is Longtime Lurker's Asking to be Born. It's about the pregnancy, more than the baby, but it's very intensely about the family and there is a sequel when the baby is a toddler. Be warned: HERE THERE BE MPREG.

Title: asking to be born
Fandom: Fall Out Boy RPS with a whole bunch of cameos
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Pete/Patrick
Word Count: ~26,000
Warnings: magical realism/pseudoscience, pregnant!sex, überfluff, melodrama, unabashed cheesiness, and general absurdity. also mpreg, in case you missed that bit.

http://longtime-lurker.livejournal.com/4972.html

And last, but certainly not least is Thereafter You Have It (And Tango Makes Three), by Sunsetmog. Sunsetmog is one of my favorite authors--I love her voice and the way that she writes bandom. I'll let her do the explaining, I love her summary.

Title: Thereafter You Have It (And Tango Makes Three)
Author: sunsetmog
Fandom: Panic at the Disco
Pairing: Brendon Urie / Spencer Smith
Rating: NC-17 overall; mostly R.
Word count: 90,000.

Notes: The concept for this fic was entirely stolen from harriet_vane, who emailed me and said "I want to write about how Brendon knocks up some girl and is left with the baby", and then I stole her idea and told her all about in a series of emails that spilled into a google doc, and then spilled into another google doc, and then I rolled my eyes and realised it was, in fact, fic.

Summary: Baby!fic. As harriet_vane succinctly put it, the almost true story of how Brendon's an idiot, Spencer brings Brendon shiny rocks, and no one gets any sleep. Or, alternatively, the one in which Brendon accidentally gets a girl pregnant, decides he wants to be a dad, and pretends like he's not in love with Spencer.

Re: Part 2: Bandom
Oh damn I forgot one! My conception of "family" fic has always been more kidfic which is why, but I think this one definitely fits the bill.

Like the Tide is a story in which Spencer Smith and Ryan Ross who are orphans that meet in a foster home and maintain a connection. It's about them losing families, finding new ones, and holding on to one another. One of my absolute favorite bandom fics. It's also epically, epically long :D

Title: Like the Tide
Authors: [info]arsenicjade and [info]untappedbeauty
Pairing: Ryan/Spencer
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~124,000
Author's Summary: Ryan and Spencer meet as children in the foster care system. Despite instances of separation, somehow they always seem to find their way back to each other.
Warnings: Underage sex, scenes of violence, and mentions of past physical and psychological abuse.

From The Magnificent Seven: if you don't mind kidfic, where some of the seven are turned into children, I can recommend

North Pass Ranch (http://www.blackraptor.net/m7fic-35/refuge/index.htm) by JoyK.
It's in the form of a series, but the stories together show the slow steps in the forming of a new family between two law enforcers and the three boys they found in the aftermath of Katrina. Ezra, Vin and JD are kids here, Chris and Buck the ones who take them in with the help of their friends (the way it usually happens in this fandom).

And also Runners (http://www.thebrowsery.us/gilhale/m7-fiction/runners.html) by Gill Hale.
Here Chris, still embittered by the loss of his family, becomes the protector of two teenagers that live on the street: Vin and Ezra. In a related side-story Buck takes in the young boy JD.

Posting a little late, but...

My all-time favorite family fic is probably "Reconcilable Differences," but a close second to that is doctorV's epic DCU fixit fic, Mulletverse (http://doctorv.livejournal.com/31768.html).

Booster Gold brings his boyfriend back from the dead after Infinite Crisis, and accidentally creates a teenaged son from a blend of his and Blue Beetle's DNA in the process. Said son grows up, creates his own superhero team, and there are time-travel shenanigans, people getting de-aged, and eventually, Junior Carter-Kord & his wife having children of his own.

And in terms of sheer adorable:

The Importance of Teeth (http://badfic.net/fic/authority/importance-of-teeth), by Alis Dee/badfic. The Midnighter is a cutsom-built killing machine with a computer in his head. And he's always on time to take his daughter to her dentist appointments. (Plus, the female OC -- a kindergarten teacher -- from whose perspective the fic is written is really well-realized and interesting).
