Remorse by michelel72 (PG)

  • Jun. 29th, 2011 at 12:25 AM
Title: Remorse.
Fandom: Stargate: SG-1/Stargate: Atlantis.
Pairing: Gen.
Categories: Angst, Crossover.
Length: Long.
Warnings: The author warns that "Part One may trigger on the emotional abuse axis."

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] michelel72
Author Website: Michelel72 @ AO3

Author's Summary:
"The truest punishment Sam knows is guilt … and she knows McKay doesn't feel that. Yet."

Review:
After the events of "48 Hours" Carter decides to teach McKay a lesson, but things don't go as planned as the McKay she is eventually confronted by is not the man she though she knew. Rodney, on the other hand, is faced with a reality he does not accept as his own and will do whatever it takes to get home again.

This is one of my all time favorite Stargate fics. The plot is creative and tantalizingly ambiguous, the characters (in particular Sam, Daniel and Rodney) really well written and the emotional impact strong. I really appreciate the fact that the author does not resort to character bashing and that there's not a clear hero and villain divide. Rather, the story becomes an exploration of the moral choices made by some of the key actors (there's an excellent meta discussion about this fic addressing these issues, which I recommend) and whether it could possibly have been justified.

"Remorse" is considered to be the first part of the "Broken Mirror" series, though so far it is the only story that has been written (it can be considered as a stand-alone fic, which is why I'm reccing it, though there are a lot of loose ends). Despite the fact that I really love the ambiguity of the fic, I admit that I would dearly love to see how the story unfolds.

Fair Market Value by Arsenic (NC-17)

Title: Fair Market Value
Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Brendon/Ryan/Spencer
Categories: angst, AU, drama, hurt/comfort, slave, virgin
Length: Epic (~50,000 words)
Warnings: discussion of non-con, sexual slavery, violence, torture

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade
Author Website: stories by arsenicjade

Review:
When Brendon goes to the market to get a field-slave, he somehow buys Ryan, a body slave, instead. Brendon and his friends hate slavery, but Brendon needs help with his fields and slaves are about the only help for sale. It’s a quite a surprise when Brendon’s best friend, Spencer, seems to know Ryan.

This is a fantastic slavery fic. The writing is beautiful; the use of Ryan’s “tattoos” especially is just breathtaking. Although the basic plot is done rather often in fandom, this is one of the best executions out there. Ryan and Brendon both are such sympathetic characters in this, it’s remarkably easy to get lost in this world. All in all a very good way to spend the afternoon, especially if you’re craving a little hurt/comfort.
