In a post-apocalyptic world where the vamps have taken over, Spike is just spinning his wheels bored out of his mind. But when he discovers the picture of one Xander Harris, former Scooby, in a book of high-end human prostitutes his interest is piqued.

Despite the fact that this is a dark fic, it really doesn’t feel very dark at all, probably because in comparison to some of Witling’s other stories this is closer to gray. Don’t get me wrong. This is a dark fic. Set in a darkly dystopian future, how can it fail to be? But the relationship the boys build through the story is a definite bright point to the story.

I love Spike’s characterization in this. He’s the perfect combination of Season Two Big Bad and Season Four cunning. It’s refreshing to find a story where Spike’s not overly possessive. The nice thing about Bandom is the amount of wildly implausible behavior that happens in the real musicians’ lives, giving writers in Bandom plenty of material to build off of. Pete Wentz has a history so full of potential plots he is a writer’s dream. It’s ridiculously easy to cast him in any number of skeezy or disturbing roles. So, it was unusual to find Patrick in the role of prostitute.

This is an intriguing story, looking at Patrick’s other occupation from Pete’s POV. It does a fantastic job of showing how difficult it can be on a character to handle knowing a loved one’s dirty secrets.

There are a few jumps in this that could use a little smoothing over; the tie into canon is both ingenious and practically impossible to write successfully. Also, there’s a point in the story where it seems certain Pete’s going to start up with the exploitive behavior. But then he goes out and really, really doesn’t. Truthfully, Pete is nothing but sweet in this, and everyone ends up with a happy ending.
