Review:
Bertie gets a summons from Aunt Dahlia to visit Brinkley Court and makes haste to get to Anatole's cooking comply. Only when he arrives, Aunt Dahlia denies ever sending the summons. Even more baffling, the next day an expensive set of emeralds goes missing. Bertie's the prime suspect (natch) so it's a good thing Lord Peter Wimsey is there to look into the matter. If only Lord Peter didn't keep referring to Bertie as Captain Wooster...

Wow. I mean, wow. Until I read this fic, I never imaged that someone could somehow find a way to place the fluffy, fairytaleseque world of Jeeves and Wooster into the real world of the time, when world wars were cutting a swath through the young men of England and there was a real fear that England would be invaded and conquered. Yet not only does Adina pull this miracle off, she manages to do so while writing in perfect Wodehousian language and providing an intriguing theory behind Bertie's amusing-but-bordering-on-negligible personality. Bertie himself is marvelous in this fic -- flighty, flaky, and wonderfully loveable, and yet with the occasional hint that something deeper (and darker) is running just beneath the surface. The mystery is also an entertaining one and though the ending is just a smidgeon abrupt, that's more than made up for by the wonderful characterizations and plot that came before.

Even if you (like me) know nothing at all about Lord Peter Wimsey, you should give this one a try. You'll never look at Jeeves and Wooster quite the same way again.

Review:
The CSI crew is investigating a slime-covered mummified body(!) when they stumble on a runaway teenager with a big secret. Now they want to know: who is this Danny Parker Fenton and what connection, if any, does he have with a killer who mummifies his victims and covers them in slime?

Wow. I'd never even heard of Danny Phantom when I first tried this fic and I was so impressed by it that I immediately went out to try and find some more DP fics. Danny's story is tragic and surprisingly realistic aside from the whole ghost business and his creepy but not completely evil relationship with Vlad Masters (the villain in DP canon, I think) is fascinating.

On the CSI side, you've got an interesting case file (including some science that is just about as accurate as in CSI canon -- which is to say, not very); appearances by nearly every CSI regular, with Greg and Grissom getting the most screen time; and a brilliant cameo by Lady Heather. Most impressive is Grissom's characterization -- he's not my favorite CSI character by a long shot, but he's just about awesome enough in this fic to make me change my mind.

If you like angsty hurt/comfort stories featuring strong characters and plenty of grey morality, then you should give this fic a try.

Review:
Angels come to Boston, where they give Paul one hell of an unexpected message.

I'll admit that this is a story for a very select group of readers, namely: people who watched all episodes of Miracles. For those readers, the resolution for the whole 'what is Paul's purpose' will be very satisfying, and the ending will give you a little thrill. Plus, bonus cameos from Castiel and Anna of Supernatural fame.

If you, like me, were disappointed by the abrupt ending to Miracles, this fic is a lovely 'what could have been' ending for the series.

It's been suggested that by pooling donations, it'd be possible to get a heck of a lot more recs for the Help Pakistan Rec-A-Thon.  If someone would be interested in organizing that, we'll be happy to give you posting access so you can put up an organizing post.  Just respond to this post or e-mail me at janethunder at gmail dot com.

EDIT: It looks like it'll be okay if we pool the donations on this end.  So go bid!  Everyone's a winner and five dollars gets you two recs!
