Thanks to a McGuffin, Rodney is deaged. Angst and comforting and lots of awwww moments ensue.

I'm a sucker for de-aged character fic (though, oddly, not for OC kid!fic) and this is a great one. Meredith (the kid version of Rodney) is cute but a little bit broken, and it's great to see him grow happier and more confident as the story goes on. At the same time, John does his best to be something he never thought he'd be (a parent) while at the same time struggling with the realization that his Rodney is gone forever. Perfect for anyone in the mood for a bittersweet but heartwarming story.

Title: I Will Remember You by Alyjude
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: fluff, angst, post-series
Length: Long (~15,000 words)
Warnings: Warning: one *very* painful typo

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alyburns
Website: http://k9kennel.skeeter63.org/Alyjude.htm

Review:
A year after TSbyBS, Blair is working as a deputy sheriff in a small town in California (yes, he ran away from home). All seems to be going well, when he hears that Jim has been murdered.

If there's one thing Alyjude excels at, it's producing fluff. And this is quite possibly the fluffiest presumed-dead fic ever. You've got banter, you've got some great OCs in Laytonville (the town Blair moved to), you've got Simon being awesome. A great, fast read for folks looking for a bit of angst with a heavy side of fluff.

Title: Songs of a Wayfarer by Marguerite
Fandom: X-Men

Length: Medium (~7,500 words)
Warnings: death of a secondary character

Review:
After X-Men 2, Logan goes on the road. He and Marie e-mail each other while he's gone.

It's amazing what an author can do with a really well-written epistolary fic. There were times this story nearly moved me to tears, and other times when I laughed out loud. Marie's youth and determination shine through, as does Logan's gruff affection and blunt language. I do wish the author hadn't brushed aside the whole Marie-touching-people issue, but it's a very minor quibble in an otherwise great fic.

Review:
When a cadre of Elves come to Camelot (elves are apparently allowed in Camelot because they are infinitely more badass than Uther) to hold a tournament to choose their next king, there is a surprise candidate for the throne: Merlin. And guess who impulsively volunteers to be his champion?

First of all, it must be said: Morgana is AWESOME in this fic. By far the best, coolest, and most kick-ass Morgana I've ever read.

Fortunately, the rest of the story is just as good. The plot is intricate and full of intriguing layers and I found myself utterly fascinated by the three levels of the tournament. The characterization is excellent, especially for Merlin and (surprisingly enough) Uther. Finally, you have some intriguing nods to Arthurian mythology for that extra bit of squee.

A perfect choice if you're in the mood for a Merlin fic with an epic feel.

Title: There Is a Season by Darcy and Kalimyre
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: gen
Categories: angst, hurt/comfort, kid!fic, AU, family
Length: Very Epic (~175,000 words)
Warnings: bullying; implied pre-story physical child abuse; minor character death

Author on LJ: n/a
Website: http://jd-divas.com/

Review:
When the SGC hears about a recently orphaned child prodigy named Daniel Jackson, they quickly pull him out of foster care to prevent him from being snatched by the NID. And who better to take care of him than Jack, who has been permanently grounded due to his knees? A little bit of hurt and lots of comfort follow.

This is an Aw fic if there ever was one. Kid!Daniel doesn't have much in common with his canon counterpart, but he manages to be a cute kid without veering into Perfect Child territory, and his growing relationship with Jack is a joy to read. Jack is also awesome, as he confronts his motivations for taking in a boy the exact age his own son had been when he died. Jack isn't a perfect father and Daniel isn't the perfect kid, but together they are something special.

The latter half of the story does lose some steam (somehow learning that lying is bad doesn't have quite the same impact as a boy learning to love), but the warmth of Jack and Daniel's new familial bonds as well as great turns by Sam, Teal'c, Hammond, and Dudley (easily the best child OC I've ever read) help keep the story satisfying to the very end. A lovely, heart-warming fic.

Jim and Blair investigate the murder of a priest. Oh, and Blair has a broken arm.

First things first: the running joke about how Blair broke his arm did not work for me. At all. (And I'll tell you right now that the payoff in the end totally wasn't worth it, so don't get your hopes up.)

Fortunately, the rest of the story is a very solid, well-done case file, with lots of unexpected layers. You also have some lovely hurt/comfort thanks to the aforementioned broken arm, and Jim and Blair play off of each other beautifully. If you like mysteries, police procedurals, or Blair being an idiot and having Jim take care of him, this is definitely the fic for you.

Mensa AU. Rodney decides that everyone likes Rod better, so he runs away from home goes to Rod's universe in his place. Angst and multiple universe romances abound.

This one is already in my reread folder, so I'm not sure how I missed reccing it before. It's not a long story, but it packs a hell of an emotional kick, with all of the Rodney angsting and John angsting (and, eventually, the *other* John angsting). If you, like me, have a fondness for Blair Rodney running away from home fic and/or are looking for a bit of angst with a very satisfying ending, this is the fic for you.

Length: Medium (~6,700 words)

Review:
Draco is a veela and not at all happy about it. That is, until he catches sight of Harry and falls immediately in lust. Fortunately he has Crabbe and Goyle to (literally) smack some sense into him. Unfortunately, the smacking doesn't seem to be very effective. And, damn it, Zabini will *not* get his ass out of Draco's bed!

If you're looking for an earnest, angst-filled bonding fic, you are definitely in the wrong place. I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt as Draco got the bad news (and promptly made his mother promise to keep ugly hats away from his impending funeral, because he absolutely was *not* going to mate with anyone), spotted Harry (and *somehow* ended up in Harry's lap, with his tongue down Harry's throat), and spends most of the rest of the fic trying to stay as far away from Harry as possible, while at the same time desperately doing whatever he can to get Harry off.

Funny, fast-paced, and featuring the most drama-queenish (and yet surprisingly in character) Draco I've ever seen, this is a great fic for anyone who needs a laugh or ten.

Length: Very Epic (~85,000 words)

Review:
Jim and Blair have a massive fight that causes them (well, Blair) to reconsider their friendship. At the same time, a case takes an unexpected turn with potentially lethal consequences.

As everyone knows by now, I have a kink for break up/make up fics, and that stretches to friendship stories as well. Blair is exceedingly angry through much of this fic, which is understandable, but he's also not without flaws (for once, it's not *Jim* who is refusing to talk), which I really appreciate. Jim is well drawn as well as he confronts years worth of repression and poorly considered choices. The real hero of this fic, however, is Simon, who has a smaller part, but who is (as usual) the one who Gets Things Done.

If you're a fan of fics where the boys have to confront the flaws in their relationship, but are tired of all of the stories where Blair runs away from home rather than face a confrontation, this is definitely a fic to try. A slightly melodramatic (but in a good way) hurt/comfort extravaganza.

Castle and Beckett finally resolve that UST.

One of the biggest issues I have with het is how often female characters end up submissive in bed, even if they are strong, independent characters outside of the bedroom. Not so Kate Beckett -- inside of bed and out she is strong, knows her own mind, and isn't about to settle for anything less than being equal. The result is a scorching hot sex scene. Yum.

While the rest of the story is a bit bare, Kitchen Confidential is a great choice for anyone looking for a steamy bit of het smut.

Title: The Reasonable Doubt Series by china_shop
Fandom: White Collar

Categories: AU, angst, romance, virgin (to gay sex)
Length: Epic (~46,000 words)
Warnings: n/a

Review:
Peter, Elizabeth, and Neal are meant to be with each other. They are. Now if only Neal and Elizabeth can convince Peter of this fact.

My favorite romances are long and slow, where the road to true love isn't smooth and where characters have to make conscious decisions about what they need and what is most important to them. The Reasonable Doubt series is the epitome of difficult romances and much of the story is taken up with the hard choices that Neal, Elizabeth, and especially Peter are going to have to make for any kind of romance between the three of them to be possible, much less successful.

Everyone in this fic is perfectly in character, but I'm most impressed with Peter and Mozzie. Peter's struggle with his desires and his morality is the heart of this story and it's an affecting, powerful tale. Mozzie isn't central to the story, but he's so well-written that I can hear his voice in my ear and every moment he's in the fic is a positive delight.

Finally, I'm hugely impressed with the ending of this fic, which is probably the most realistic happy ending I've thus far encountered in the White Collar fandom. The ending, even more than the fabulous characterizations, is why I'm reccing this fic (and why it found its way into my reread folder).

Fair warning: the Reasonable Doubt series is a collection of short stories; as such, it does start off rather choppy. By a quarter of the way in, however, the fics flow seamlessly from one story to the next, so the entire series reads as one very long, very satisfying tale.
